Even though they have a simple design and everything, it's good because it loads really quickly and I've never been a fan of Yahoo, Netscape and others search engines having a complicated front page.
I use Google to check my internet connection as well. Like if it's loading kind of slow, I go on Google to see if it's working/loading fast or not. Even though Google's homepage is basic, people who want something more complicated on the frontpage like having news, weather, etc. can use iGoogle. Google pretty much has everything and is very well developed in every sense, there really aren't any flaws there.
