But, besides the fact I had my account for 7 hours, I did love snark when I DID have an account. Further more, I can't wait to join later when I am eligible.
Snark has very interesting topics, sutch as Books, Websites, Movies, And other basic topics, along with more ineresting and 9If I say so myself,) "Sophisticated" Topics such as (quote) "Eye-Popping, Technophiles, Shameless Promotion, Marketplace," and more. (unquote.)
To candy-coat it, the site has a very nice "base" and I can't wait to join again when I am eligible.

First of all I would want to congratulate you because your forum is amazing! I've never seen a forum so organized. It is not crowded with ads, letters, etc. It would be a very user-friendly forum for everyone. I have joined a lot of forums, and at first I don't know where to go because the buttons are so complicated. You have arranged the page elements well and allows the user's eyes to breathe. Also by using only two colors (in different tonal values) makes the overall appearance attractive and inviting. I think there is nothing that I could suggest to you since it's the best forum I've seen so far.
Keep it up!

Why not create another funky footer to match the header? It just seems you've spent all that time creating a nice header and then let us down with a typical forum layout with CSS edited, thats all.
): For that reason my review only gives a 4 star, custom the footer slightly more and your onto a massive winner!

Some people may say its a bit elitist but I like the fact that nearly everyone in the forum puts something back into the community.
Everyone states their opinion, which is where some might get the impression that its a bit of a mean forum, but I like the honesty. I wouldn't ask for critique on something unless I'd satisfied myself that I'd done all that I could think of to make it a good site/article or whatever. So the honest opinions of the users there help to improve your work a greater standard.
Its the only forum I find myself going back to!

on 26th Mar 2009 and said:Hmm. Forums, ok, let’s do this, welcome page, the updates are pretty sleek. The cat looks cute and I love how its tail is the first letter of this site. SNARK. Ok, is superior, first what or who is snark? I can see the colors used are quite common for forums. I don’t like to judge right away but since I’ve been doing this for a while now, I naturally judge your site at first site! I like how the updates / news are given to me, more like slapped in my face like I HAVE TO NEED TO know this right now. I’m not interested in updates really, just want to get a good feel from visiting a site, something useful, maybe gather some ideas, make some friends, you know. Its great you have the stats right there but that’s normally on the bottom, don’t try to be different, you’ll fail, believe me… just follow the common laws and you’ll die happy without regrets. You have tons of forums open and many members, seems like a pretty active place to me and someplace I’d want to hang out every day. Congratulations, you’ve impressed me! Although after spending some time on here, the green color starts to look like barf or puke to me, its upsetting my stomach, so I’ll be going.

I have been a member of Snark for almost a year, the longest I have remained a member of a forum. I can't say much else, just that this forum is awesome. :)

on 2nd Jan 2009 and said:Appearance
Snark is very clean. I was very unsure about how SMF looks, because I've seen a couple which were just really boring to look at. However, after visiting Snark, I changed my mind pretty quickly. It just takes a good eye for design to customize it. Snarkles is cute. I don't like the color green that much, but this doesn't bother me much at all.
Activity
Snark is very active for a general message board. It's rare that it goes below a page. A lot of activity is more in the posts department rather than the threads, and that's not a problem, because it just leaves room for quality threads to be created, rather than "OMG! YOU SUX0RS!!!!11~ LULZ!!". Speaking of, that kind of talk is seen only in mockery, and even so, it's a rarity.
And yes, there is a lot of off-topicness in threads. But that's what gives Snark its magic.
Environment
Despite popular belief, Snark's drama meter is very low. To the common guest lurker, it may seem like it's off the charts and what not. No, not really. My reason for joining Snark (joined intimidated, by the way) was in search of a board where the majority was in my age group. I felt it almost immediately, and since I joined in early July, I've managed to rack up over 850 posts. Even on my own message boards when I had them I didn't post over 850 times in just 6 months. I guess that's how comfortable I am.
Yes, they are honest, and if some people are idiots, Snarkers may tear them a new one, but that's just them.
All in all...
If you like to laugh, Snark is for you.
If you are over the age of 18, Snark is for you.
If you like maturity (without it being too stuffy), Snark is for you.
However, if you want to be a drama slut and act like an idiot, then you'll get eaten alive.
That might change your ways, though. In order to get the true feel of the board, you really have to join. Just because you hear about Snark being completely drama-filled doesn't mean that it is (all the time). If little (bwahahahaha!!) old intimidated me can do it, then go right ahead.

Also, I would like to complement you for the icons, they are very original as well, and complement the theme perfectly. I also like how you chose a really bright color and still managed to not make it look sloppy. :)
I like how the whole theme is very creative, but coming to the navigation, it's very plaid, I think you should make it fancier and more fun. ;)
But besides that, it's perfect!

on 27th Dec 2008 and said:I am probably one of the worst Snarkers in existence. I forgot to log on and when I do get on, I skip a lot of posts. Why? I have no idea. It's not Snark, it's me. Really.
Snark has a nice layout that is easy on the eyes. It is simple, and cute.
There are a good number of active members, so there is always something new to read. Everybody seems to be very genuine and honest, but it still manages to be very low drama, which I always appreciate in a forum.
The member base is very diverse, which keeps things interesting, as well.
I think my main complaint is that it can be a little intimidating sometimes, since so many of the members seem to be good friends. I kind of feel like an outsider sometimes. But again, I think the problem is me; I'm kind of shy sometimes and have not been posting as well (or as often) as I could, which would probably alleviate a lot of those feelings.
That said, I still think it's a nice forum and I keep going back from time to time, even if I am just lurking. It's worth signing up at and visiting.

on 17th Dec 2008 and said:Hey, This is one great looking forum. Although it's using SMF which isn't the best forum software available it's got one fantastic design to offset that. It's nice to see a forum not using the default style recoloured or slightly edited. I haven't yet registered but I think I will tomorrow after reading the other reviews saying it's quite a good community. The only slight critisism I have is that the box that displayes the last post in is quite small and the information posted in there looks quite cramped. Maybe make the forum name cells slightly thinner and increase that section. I'll add to this tomorrow once I have registered. Keep up the good work :)

Mozilla Firefox | 1440 x 900 Resolution| Windows Vista
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------It's me again, oh hello! This review will be quite short (well, for me anyway) because I am not a member so I do not have true insight to the guts of the forum.
The reason I am not a member is something I would like to mention in this review. While I know and like several of the members, I have heard that the place has a reputation of being "elitist" and that it is easy to be snubbed there. I have heard that the members will bad-mouth people (Now, I don't know if that is TRUE, but it's reputation has proceeded it) quite easily. I feel that Snark's reputation keeps me away from it because I am a very nice and sensitive person. Although I try not to start problems with people and I am far from thinking I am superior to anyone, it still scares me.
Now, none of the actual members have said anything about the forums really to me so this could all just be disgruntled ex-members that caused problems and were banned, in which case my judging of the forums would be biased and unfair.
The design has a unique flair to it that is very nice, I must say. It still has a message board's general structure but it looks much more classy than all of the XMBs out there (I am guilty, I have owned two XMB forums in my lifetime!).
Now, I hope you don't think I am a sniveling baby or anything! After I skimmed through the forum list, it seems very much more inviting. I really think that perhaps the people spreading the "elitist" propaganda might have been arrogant fools that got their pride hurt.
I suppose I might join... I do rather like a lot of the active members. :)
It seems my review has been based about 10% on design and about 90% on reputation, so I can't honestly sit here and give it a low rating. I suppose I shouldn't actually have a say in the rating but hey, I thought I would put my two-cents in.
I will give it a 4/5 simply because reputation comes from all sources and nine times out of ten the source speaks from their arse. ;)
UPDATED 27 Nov 08:
I wanted to add a tiny little nugget of information, now that I have actually joined. I like the fact that we can cuss, rant and rave without being slapped on the wrist. I'm afraid I will lose my cool and become an animal if I don't censor myself though. ;)Also, for anyone that hasn't joined... I haven't run into anyone being an absolute snob for no reason. I suppose if you have a shatty attitude going in there, they will give it back. Glad that I joined after all! :)

However for using a rather 'crappy' forum script the actual design is quite good. The colours don't exactly fit but the initital design, well is rather good.
I don't really see what it's all about. It seems like your abit desperate just to appeal to everyone, which is NOT the way to do it. People WILL soon leave. Mabye try concentrating on a certain group of people and deleting some of your forums.
The logo is certainly HQ but why? It's got nothing to with the site. It just confuses everything even more.
Personally i'd look at this forum and say 'oh thats cute' but leave and never return.
Sorry I know i'm one tough cookie, but with a couple of changes it seems like one hell of a forum.

Not that I get tired of message boards or don't communicate well with people, it's just that there's this certain charm it has that I can't quite pinpoint. It may be the nice, simple themes made by Jacky, or the 1337 members it has, or maybe even the snarky attitude of people, but whatever it may be, it worked on me.
I like how you can have in-depth discussion with people, and at the same time, mess around. I also like the usage of proper English around the forum. Hello honey, who would want chatspeak?
There are only two themes on this board but I'm so fond of them. I especially like the Debut theme. The pink and orange contrast so well with the gray!
The only thing I do not like though is the swarm of stupid people joining the board and ruining the fun (or maybe creating them at times) for the rest. I also hope that it goes back to it's old state - very, very active.

FIRST IMPRESSION
I love your layout (but since I'm a non-member I can only see one layout instead of both layouts that everyone else mentions here). It's very fresh, clean, and it truly stands out, but what makes me admire this layout more is because that it's not the "default forum standard" layout, and the fact that it's on an SMF forum system. I still have yet to learn about that forum (I have an SMF forum myself but I resorted to modified pre-made templates) and how their theme system works. Kudos to that!OTHER STUFF
I've read from several other sites that the entire forum consists (or consisted?) of the "elite" of the personal sites scene (I don't know if I'm making sense or not). I've looked through topics and posts and I don't really see anything in them that would make the people there "elitist." Maybe I'm out of touch or something or that I have a different definition of "elite"/"elitist" from the people who declared this forum "elite."There's a broad range of topics that members can come in and join in the discussions, so for those who are afraid of this "elitism" going on in there won't have to come in and get overwhelmed by certain people they're not comfortable with. I don't think I'm making any sense.
Other than that, I do hope this community lives on in the next coming years. :)

I had nothing against the forum, but I think it had something against my computer. No matter what I did, the site seemed to slow down/freeze up my computer. One day, I clicked on a Snark link again, and it worked fine on my computer. It was a miracle!
I joined and have been posting ever since. Though I'm not extremely active, I do post when I have something to say. I really like the members of the forum. I visit a lot of their blogs, so it's great to have another kind of interaction with them as well.
The only thing I dislike is that there are only two themes. They're really nice, but I like change, so I've been hoping for a new theme or two.

on 6th Nov 2008 and said:While I have never been truly a part of what would be coined as a "teenybopper," forum (meaning, any forum I've been on has had a fairly intelligent user base with very little chatspeak :P), Snark is definitely refreshing in its professional attitude toward communication. Not that it's all to-the-point and on-the-line, but it is a place where any topic can be discussed and receive a valid response. A valid *legible* response.
Both themes are very nice, and clean, and simple. I enjoy not having a zillion themes with varying celebrity banners. I love the unity of everything in the design.
Snark has a rep (yes, a rep, yo.) for being "elite." And some times it comes out, yes. But the majority of the time, I find the members to be humble and friendly and helpful. I would have no issue approaching any of them with a question or comment. Bluntness is to be expected at times, but the same can be said for most forums, and the delivery is often done in an intelligent way.

on 6th Nov 2008 and said:Warning: as a member of Snark, this review is most likely going to be biased.
I've been amazed by the two (!) designs we've had so far. Jacky (the founder) has set an extremely high expectation on that front. The designs are sleek and elegant, and they are presented methodically; they are sophisticated, and set Snark apart from many of the forums that are often "grouped" together with us. As opposed to using a premade SMF template and editing the colours and changing the banner -- as is much more common, Jacky went the extra mile and made Snark stand out. I think that's part of its natural charm: we are different.
In note to the technicalities of Snark, I can't say I've had any troubles with Snark specifically. I have no qualms with how the management and staff run Snark; apart from, perhaps, the absences of some staff members, but to counter that: (i) they're -- as far as I'm aware -- university students and/or extremely busy, (ii) it's rather absolute to say that I'm not aware of any other forums that have a hundred percent staff "punctuality". They key thing to mention about Snark's administration, is that the timezones are somewhat varied, to an extent that, sure, it's not dense, but you're likely to be online at the same as at least one of the staff members; and hey, who wants a forum with a 1:1 staff-member ratio? All members of staff are more than competent people, too; they lack the favouritism shown on many other message boards; they do their jobs. That is quite a large plus for forum like Snark to have. Also, while Jacky might appear to be away for times/not that active compared to some other members which may intimidate some new people, it's common knowledge that Jacky hits all the other checkboxes under "administrator"; plus, it's not her fault the monkeys won't let her out.
A first impression of Snark, which I've heard frequently, is that we're elitist. Perhaps that's an over-exaggerated point, perhaps it isn't. I feel that it entirely depends on your participation. Snark is a forum which has included many past "elitist-forum" members; it also includes other communities in that notion too; it also includes the new people, who have joined and made their stance with us. The main issue? New people. There are members who are/were already part of the self-proclaimed-"clique", these people will have it easy (usually) in settling into the new atmosphere -- I like to call Snark the mesh of cliques -- because they already know people there; they already know what the attitudes are like; they already, (how can I put this?), act the way Snarkers do. New members who come from members' websites, or come through the ever-so-frequent drama, or simply stumble upon the forum and think: "Hey, this looks cool," will have it the tiniest-fraction harder. If they fit in, then that's it: they fit. If they don't fit the mould? They'll know, immediately, and that's where, I believe, many fall: they can either pick themselves up gracefully, or have a hissyfit -- a Snark definition: hissyfits = epic lulz. The drama, especially, has got to be the largest referrer to Snark, and that's where most of the negative comments about being elitist stem from.
Point 1: The majority of our members have experienced the Internet since the late nineties. It's 2008 this year. That is a lot of trends, websites, and webmasters.
[appended] Point 2: The core members of Snark are an established group of people whose numbers aren't increasing; some of us inevitably are cranky and bitter, and we hate telling people the same things over and over again. Drama? Pretty much that.
In terms of activity, it's active at times, and inactive at others. The nationalities of members are dotted around the globe. The forum is not restricted to English; we have a languages forum that is used for multi-lingual members, and this is also a helpful tool for those learning. The forum is not restricted to old members; we have events that are "friendly" and easy to participate. We have "The Random Thread," and rant/rave threads for the people who aren't into making new threads -- it seems like an odd thing to say, but it's true! Let's just say, while those generic, global topics have their bad points (private conversations; incessant babbling; easy-to-lose-track-of-posts), the useful point for the shy is that you don't have to feel "pointless" or "useless" if you want to tell us you've just passed an exam, or you've bought some new socks, then those threads are there for that. The forum, essentially, has almost everything for almost everybody.
As a forum, we're pretty liberal. You can spout off as much hate as you want (censorship is only down to: warn for squicks), as long as you understand that it may not be appreciated by everybody. Unfortunately, this sometimes includes ridicule and mockery to such an extent that a member needs/has to leave. A flaw that many members hold, (and I am, indeed, hypocritical of all the member issues I have with Snark; I am a member, after all, although I attempt to be on the "can't be arsed," side), is that sometimes we lack the capacity to shut up; we'll argue until our point is put across, or until the other person no longer replies. Sometimes there are some unwarranted, deliberate "attacks" and/or extreme prejudice with new people who come from, say, another forum attached to recent drama. I can concur that that's probably normal in most communities, but it's something that has sometimes made me not want to associate myself with Snark. There are some members who will follow (the word "sheep" springs to mind) the considered "elites" and lack opinions in a thread until someone differs, and publishes that point (then woompth, "hey, wait, I meant this"). It also works the other way around. Sometimes, an elite will have a differing opinion, and some members lack the backbone to defend themselves, some members don't feel it in their place to defend that, and sometimes, because of the status, they'll agree. There are some members who need to calm the fuck down, and step away from the monitor. But there are exceptions to this rule, just like everything comes in pairs, and those are the true gems that Snark has to offer.
Point 3: There are quite a few members who probably epitomise the idea that Snark isn't good/detract the goodness.
On the whole, however, I am in favour of Snark. As Jem said in her review, it is a generally active forum with an intelligent user base, relative to the neighbouring forums. The backgrounds of these people are so incredibly diverse, and as a person interested in the opinions of others (a reason why I try my best to avoid the sheep), it's an educational experience for me. As a demography for Snark, I can tell you that it's mainly something for the under thirties (although, feel free to correct me as the years go by :P); sometimes you might enjoy the political, intellectual discussion, sometimes you might be fine with the petty high-school drama; or maybe you're not even interested in the socio-political points? That's fine. There's something for everyone -- the skill is to avoid topics you don't have an interest in, and post in the ones you do. The variety of opinions to offer do conflict, but you'll most likely, five (three if people want to stay on your side :P) times out of five, get an honest answer from almost every single Snark member.
And this, folks, is what makes Snark, Snark.

Snark offers a variety of different topics to discuss. The people who discuss these topics come from all over the world. From Australia all the way to USA. There is always activity there and I know that this won't stop unless the end of the world comes too soon.
At times there can be eDrama which always brings on the lulz. Since there is so much, there's even a child board for it. When we aren't lulz at some random person who thinks that they're "amazingly awesome" site pwnz all of us, we talk about politics, trends on the internet and real life, how to keep your body healthy and much more!

Honestly, when I first joined Snark, I had this huge fear that I wouldn't be able to fit in, mainly due to the fact that most of the people there are all elite, and I'm not. Eventually I got used to it and realized that everyone treats each other as equal. No one bothers about how old you are, or what you are, but instead treats you as one of their own.
The thing that I love most about Snark is the flexibility. We can go off topic anytime and most forums do not allow that. The OT threads are usually fun and lulzy at the same time.
Design-wise, Jacky has made a lot of lovely designs for the forum and it isn't like those other forums where the themes are premade and boring. I have absolutely no problems accessing Snark even via my mobile phone.
I tried to stop visiting Snark a few times because most of my time online is spent there but eventually I gave up on that idea because Snark was simply much too amazing to give up on. This is the main reason why I gave 5 stars. There's not another MB that I've survived in for more than 6 months :D

Right from the very start, Snark has been well designed (you can switch between either theme and still be amazed), well organised (the moderators actually DO their job!) and once you get over the initial shock of the way the members go address certain things, it's very easy to enjoy the atmosphere.
I simply cannot think of any critique for the design or management of Snark because I think it's amazing as it. I may be biased, however.
