on 25th Nov 2008 and said:First Impression: The top gradient caught my eye, but pretty much I was not too impressed as I scrolled down.
Content: I did like the photos, but the section was a bit strange. Why make the older and newer thumbnails different sizes? Why not make them 100 x 100 pixels and within it have a white 9 pix wide border and 1 pix black on the very edge.
Some of your articles, you should read into. I think if you spruce up your blog enough, your tips would not contradict your site. Add dates to your articles that you write.
Coding: Your e referrer that drops down is not showing up. There is a box with an x. Might want to look into it.
You have the W3 CSS Valid button on your site. When I went to check, your code was NOT css valid.
You have extra coding in places. If you have no background, then do not put a code. You have background-image : url(); under your h2, blockquote, li. For future reference, be consistent when you code, even in css. If you use px, or not, stick with one or the other. You have some things like 0 (zero) and other places 5px.
Design: The layout as it is too plain. Jazz it up. You have a theme color. Ignore the others who complain. The color is a nice rich red and you put it as a gradiant. Why not also put headers (h1, h2, for your sections and blog titles/ page titles) that also illustrate the gradient. Just a tiny pick my up would go far.
Sidebar is a few pixels higher than that main content area.
Where are your alt attributes on your images. You need them. It is a great way to add keywords to your site without even trying. Keywords help the search engines find your site.
I am sure you have heard enough, and even I am bummed out too as I recently removed my celebrity icons from my site. However, I think you should try to use what you know. You do photos, so you can make your own free images. :) So, in ties to your article about using celeb images, well... you have your answer.
Using the target = "_blank" attribute is not valid coding. You should put your site up to the validator and see what kind of errors your site contains. Even for Firefox, you should use it.
Using this attribute gives your visitors no choice whether they want to just go to the site. Those links are meant for exit links, not surfing while surfing your site.Your comments section is between two areas. I think if you placed it on the layer with the blog itself, it would look much better. I almost missed it.
Summary: Truthfully, if you are going to be blogging, try WordPress. I have hosted so many people in the past that have used CuteNews and that script I banned on a free hostee level. They were easily spammed and my MySQL load on the server end when this would have went haywire. Only my paid webhosting is permitted under the terms that they will keep the script updated or be terminated. You have a photo section and WordPress has plug-ins geared toward photo galleries. Wordpress also holds a plug-in to tabulate online visitors and general site stats.
Your host, if they have cpanel and fantastico, then they can offer WordPress. It is really a great content management script.
Look into the suggestions I have made above and consider them. Your site does have potential to be better. Do not be afraid to play around with your site some. The site is suppose to reflect you and right now it is pretty plain. Do you want people to think that??? I am sure you do not, so get back to the drawing board and think about things you like online that might appeal to others and allow them to relate much better with you.

Thank you for the review. :D Uhm, I've just checked on the W3C CSS validator site thing, and it said my CSS was valid.. But is that only because I validated the stylesheet itself?
The images are different sized, because the older ones I'd made bigger when I put them up- I prefer smaller images for that now, and I haven't had the time to resize them, but I'll get round to it! (:
Thanks for the advice! :)![[img: avatar]](/avatars/Bethaaan.jpg)

on 24th Nov 2008 and said:Weheey :) I've wanted to review someone and I think I'll start with you!
I love your layout, I really like the like the way you've set it out. The light texture's a nice effect, did you take it? (I'm assuming it's taken by a camera, not made on Photoshop or something [can you even make some on Photoshop?!]) The colour on your text is nice but it's nowhere in your CSS, the green and the navys are nowhere to be seen. You've used the redish/pink for your italics and bolds, but where's the navy?
Your sidebar's nicely set out, maybe you could move the Validated CSS button to your footer or the 'SUPPORT' part of your sidebar?
The 'SUPPORT' part of your sidebar looks really cluttered, are those buttons for advertising? If they are use a button rotation, and the referral thing (weeewt I'm there!) isn't really 'SUPPORT' like the header suggests, you could change that to 'CLICK' or something (Original I know, I'm sure you can think of something better!)
Your Emily page is nicely set out. But when I scroll down I see the referral system thing again but in your footer. It looks really ugly (to put it bluntly) here.
The Electric page is nicely set out again. Gutted about your old site, but you have this smexy one now ;)
I love your photography, this is my fave one. I love your icons also, you should make more Other ones, they're the best, the crayon one is love :D
Your Texture page, nice textures, and yes the one that's in your layout is there. I have some I need to upload but, meeh, I'm too lazy!
I've read all your articles/stories before, but the What did I do? one's really good, you should write more when the creative juices are flowing (where the hell did that come from?)
Overall your site's really good, if you added more articles and stories it would be even better! :)Using Firefox on Windows | Report This?

Thank you for the review! :D I think I've sorted out the 'clutter' issues you mentioned.. sorta. I can't really remove them, so I might just add text links for ease, you know.. Hmm. x)
Anyway, I removed the refferer from the footer, and has it's own section in the sidebar until I decide TO DELETE OR NOT TO DELETE. Hm.UPDATED 24 Nov 08:

on 23rd Nov 2008 and said:Wow, awesome layout. It is definitely one of the nicest i've seen, and most basic. Also, the name. Electric.voltagebox.com, i like the originality of it.
The layout anyway, i don't like the way the headers are smaller than the navigational links. It makes you focus more on the links than actually finding out what section they're under. Everything is clear, and easy to read though, which is a plus, even though bits that i personally think should be bigger are littler.
You're content, though, is fairly samey. You could find it on a lot of other sites, and theres not even much of it. Although, everything clearly has its own section, as in content is under visitor and stuff.

I love you really :)
Well uhmm, yeahh..
first impression : Wow. I love the layout, it's really simple, but the light texture is amazing ! I put your css through a validator and unfortunately there were eight errors, and six warnings.. View them here: Here :)content : There isn't much here, but I realise that you've just had to delete your celebrity content so I'm not going to put you down for that :/
Graphics : I love your photography ! It's really cute ;)
Although, I suggest you use lightbox to open the images, it gets rather irritating having to keep closing the tabs when I open each photo.. If you wanna use lightbox, come to me, I'll be happy to help you.. Finally return the favour :)
icons : I love your icons ! very nice. Although, tut tut.. Celebrity images ! Kiddin' Kiddin' I hate those rules.. even if it is the law :/
light textures : Yey. I love light textures ! They are so cool. :) I'm planning on making some now that you've taught me how :)
Articles : All good All good. Very handy for the crappy bloggers out there ( eg. me :P )
fanfictions & stories : Omg. Wow. I'm a huge fan of your lyrics ( and Gabby's )
My favorites are "And from my eyes fell a thousand heart shaped tears, and they shattered on the ground as you turned away from me. My heart broke in two, and half of it ran away with you, I'm learning to live without you."
and
"and out of my mouth burst a million paper hearts, meant only for you."
They are pretty darn good :)
I really love your "what did I do?" as well. I found it really sad expecially when I saw it's a true story ! :(
I miss, Well, yeahh. Wow. Very talented writer missy. :)I think you need to add more content though, you don't have any tutorials or other little things that attract visitors.
Spelling and grammar : Yes Yes. Elimy can spell ! (:
and write properly for that matter (:originality : Yep. Yep. Very original. I can't say I've seen anybody else with a site like yours :)
To conclude : I love your site, you know I do, and your one of my favorite affies ( with Susanna and Lucy, but shh ;P )
All that I can suggest is to add more content and validate your CSS code.. I think I left the link to the validator thingy up there ^^ If not I'll give it to you on msn :)

A) Your content/blog is quite boring. I promise you, this is what sites lack and when they lack this, they drain their visitors away. Work a bit more on your content.
B) Use contrapositive colors to help your headers more because two same color scheme will not be appealing to the eyes.
C) "7 people love me. But do you?" -- That, completely made me lost although it's a "comment link", others won't even click it because it's not appealing.
D) Your sidemenu seems to be out of order. I suggest you put your bio first and then everything else falls under.

Big 'ole celeb layout. This makes me crumble inside. It's put together pretty well, but it's a celeb layout! Walking lawsuit. You don't need all that stuff in your title. Your site name and maybe a short tagline. That's all you need. I haven't seen colo(u)red scrollbars in a while. Oh, but I know why--usually I use Firefox which doesn't render them. Why have something that half your site visitors don't/can't see?
Blog and sidebar
Big gripe: the letter spacing. It's one thing to have it for headers, but for the actual blog/sidebar text? You already have large enough font, but you need more padding, and close the spacing in the text!
Your sidebar is cluttered with images. Time to let go of some things. Buttons can be turned to text links. You need to space out the parts of the sidebar a bit. I see white, then the reds immediately after. I would like to see a bit of space where I can see the actual gray background. You're "hiding" yourself. I mentioned this on someone else's site. You have your blurb so far down. It should be right after your navigation. Before your loved list, which should have line breaks rather than hyphens betwen them. I think you can combine the besties and affiliates as well.
Cutenews...bad. No. Anything but that! You can use WordPress or Textpattern as an alternative. Ask your host for an mysql database. I think your comment link should only be in your blog entry (and I do mean in your blog entry) once. Once again, padding is key!
The other pages
Emily: *Shudders at "ED-YOU-CAY-SHUN"*. Use the right word. A lot of things on this page irk me to no end, especially the blatantly intentional misspellings. It's almost unbearable.
Holy crap, that is a ridiculous list of music artists you have. Okay, you can list at most 10 artists, and write paragraphs on why do you like them. A list isn't telling much.
I couldn't stay long on your films and books page. More listing. Paragraphs, please. That'd help.
Ahhh! Factoids is a list as well! A very long list at that. I was really expecting facts about you, but this is more a meme than anything. No.
Electric: Not an interesting page at all. It needs an overhaul.
Content: Everything's content. This is visitor freebies.
Copyrighted celeb images all around! You don't need that as a crutch. You're much better than that. You take nice photos, use them more!
Your articles/writings are good, but there isn't enough of it! I think this would benefit from being on its own page once it's grown.
Coding
Your coding is atrocious. I give you credit for using a DOCTYPE. But you need to use your CSS file more. You have div styles defined in your header.php/index.php page. You can use id's and classes. Not only that, but using position:absolute; is spelling disaster. Margins will work here. <b> and <i> tags are depreciated. Underlining regular text is not recommended. Why do you have your CSS page linked as a background image? And don't make me go there with the scrollbar.
Familiarize yourself with w3schools.com. Everything that you need to learn is in there. If I went through all of the problems with your CSS and HTML, this review would span 2,000 words at least. It would take another 2 hours to write this thing and I'd like to go to bed at a normal time.
All in all...
You have a promising site. You need to do two major things:
1) Get rid of all those celebrity images, including your layout. You can do so much better without using them as a crutch.
2) Seriously brush up on your coding. It's terribly out of date.
You also need to do:
1) Stop using so many lists in your about me.
2) Unclutter your sidebar. If it's not needed, let it go. If it can be combined with something else, combine it.
3) Get more writing up, and when you do, move it to another page.
4) Change "content" to "goodies" or something of that nature. Content is everything on your site; not what you can offer for your visitors.
5) And for the love of all things green, please spell things correctly. It's one thing to have typos, but intentional misspellings are turn offs for plenty of people.
I have faith in you. You just need some upgrading. Good luck!

The headerimage is oddly places in the left side, while the content is in the middle.. The text above your content box bothes my eyes.Layout
Overall, I like the image - the paper style in the background is pretty cool. It's not totally original, but not mainstream either (: I think that the HALEY text stands out too much though, as if the style isn't quite right for the rest of the image.
The css is quite good. I like that. It's not perfectly validated thoguh. It'd take five minutes for you to look into that ;) It'd help a little, if you simply googled "css validate" and go to the site with the validator :b
The sidebar is kind of messy, which is a shame, because the style is so pretty.Content
Emily: I wondered.. Why would you spell education like this: ED-YOU-CAY-SHUN ? Sorry, but it's strange to me, when you write roperly the rest of the time xD You spelled village "villiage" - I suppose you were just a little too quick on the caps.
Electric: Maybe you should add the credits in the main "electric"-section, as there aren't a lot of links anyway. However, the site is fine, I think we've all got the point (:
Content: I like your stuff. The icon bases are kind of pointless as it is - some are simply too simple. If people are smart enough to make them into icons in Photoshop, it's a little bit odd, if they weren't sart enough to resize and place the image.. Your titles are sorta confusing in your "content"-menu.. "what did I do" ... well, how wouldd I know? I was expecting something slighly different, not knowing exactly what. If you want to display your writing, which I think you should, make it more obvious what's website tutorials and what's stories (:Final words

Do I really need to comment? ^_^ (They're Nice :3 )Layout: /Insert Celeberty Rant Here/ You shouldnt use "Blends" as layouts. they're very nice *points out* but did you get permission to use it? O_o Like i said before, Use your Photagraphy, and "Blend" That With Some Nice Tubes;Brushes;Stamps, Then create the layout :)
No extra copyright needed and its Beautiful! Side Bar: Nice, But You Dont Have to Put All your Affies there! You Could Just Put 3 or 4 of the most active affies, then Put an "All? - Apply?" link after. Use Buttons! x33
The Navigation, Mini-Bio, and Links are great & You should Make your Twitter Sec. 2 Updates longer :)Site Bar (Bottom): This is a nice touch, but i would think you could customise the text area and botton to match your layout! Then just slip it into your side bar, and your set :)
The Navigation Buttons (Back, Home, Forward) Dont really need to be there unless you have a pop-up layout, which's not the case :)
Copyright stays :))This is my first Ever review, and its pretty long to me :D

on 19th Nov 2008 and said:The minute I got onto your site, I was pretty impressed with your header image. There's actually nothing wrong with it. People always go on and about how things are too cliche, but you know, the human eye likes cliche. The only thing I would change is the humongous sunflower sticking onto the side of the girl's head. And yes, celebrity images are icky. I remember I use to use celebrity images, but when I came back from my prolonged hiatus, I got off celebrity images and have been using stock images instead. You really don't want to get in trouble for something so stupid.
Then, I look down at your CSS, and really, it horrifies me. Red, black, and white? Okay, well, that's a cliche no one wants to see. There are some bad, and some good, and this one needs to go out. I know you need it to match your image, but sometimes, you need to pick out the smaller colors and use them instead of the big, obvious ones. Also, having everything from your header, body and links centered is not pleasing to the human eye. Also, whenever I go to your contents page, you have your header one and header two boldly displayed with red background images, and when I hover over your link, it turns into something with a nasty, black background. You probably want to get rid of that. It really messed up the nice image you have ontop. I'm very confused, seeing as the gray that comes off of your header image suddenly changes color 1/4 of the page down and becomes a lighter gray.
On your navigation bar, your "emileh" part should be at least one of the top ones. You really shouldn't have it below everything else, esp. your affiliates. I know you don't want to seem like being affiliates is just about exchanging links back and forth, but do you really want your visitor to leave your site the moment they enter because another link catches their eye? Yeah, didn't think so.
So, now we move on to your footer. I'm not sure why you have to add an extra big, white footer block on the bottom of everything. You could just simply place that on the very bottom of your page without the use of back, forward and refresh buttons, and since you have subdomain, I don't see the point of the awkward Google search bar. Usually, you put up ads because you need to pay for hosting, which you don't need to pay for.
Your content is fine and dandy. Your banners are okay, but you need to move away from using the italicized font on everything. Though, I'm not too sure what these could be used for. Maybe you could state it? Your icon bases are fine and dandy, but you should categorize it instead of having people search through and look at celebrity face after face before finding the celebrity they wanted. Personally, I think some of your written articles should be under your 'emily' section seeing as most of these are personal. Most articles that should go under the visitor header are ones that everyone can read and maybe use for their site.
All in all, you're site is fine, but you may need to brush up on your CSS and such.

The "Censored," thing over the eyes looks silly. I remember when that trend came in, many years ago, and I was pretty sure it was gone by now. In any case, it makes no sense to censor eyes. :
"Hayley," stands out more than your blog title which is highly confusing. The heart pins look far too random. The edge of the sunflower is on the girl's face for some reason. Your title, "!'e l e c t r i c blah blah..." just seems silly, as does "ELECTRIC [dot] voltagebox [dot] org" in your sidebar. Hello, 2004.
I would have stuck with the cardboard/paper background for the bottom part as well, because the grey is very boring and not a very nice shade of grey to begin with. The red boxes would have looked better on the paper too, right now they look too clunky.
Your Emily paragraph on your sidebar should be before your Loved section. We are far more interested in the person behind the site than links LEAVING the site.
Oh, you're using Cutenews. How... insecure and badly coded. :P I recommend FanUpdate.
Your navigation colour is too light, it's hard to see without hovering.
Your Emily page appears to be well written with adequate information. Your Site page is okay as well.
With your credits page, you should maybe specify WHAT you used on their sites, so we know where to go if we wanted to know how to do something.
"Content," is an awful name for a section. Technically, EVERYTHING on your website is content. Surely, you could think of a more interesting name? If you're going to have a section called "content," you may as well register www.content.com and put your entire site in it, right?
Oh, you take photos! You should use some in your next layout, and axe the celebrity images altogether!
I am lol'ing while reading your "What Makes A Good Site," article. You ADMIT that celebrity images is breaking the law. Yet you still do it? So, you can't even feign ignorance. ... WHY are you using celebrity images? You like them if they're classy? Well, I've yet to see a classy celebrity layout, so I guess nobody should be using them.

Also, I have no idea who Paramore is besides "that one band" so when I saw "Hayley" (which I am guessing now is the girl's name) and then saw that your name is Emily, I was confused. I think the text on the header is unnecessary and that the layout would actually look better without it.
The text on the h2s is too small, and dark. The h1s are too dark, but just that.I can barely read it. Your content should have at least 10px breathing space (a.k.a. padding).
I think the navigation links are too pale.
Let's move on to the content!
Your about me is cute ^^ Site could be broken up into paragraphs; right now, it's just a massive wall of text.
"Content." It's kind of silly to call a link to a page "content" since everything in your site is content, no? :P
Writings, yay! I like your lyrics, but what the fuck is up with the disclaimer yelling and scolding me? I don't appreciate it, and I'm sure other visitors don't either.
"Well, this is an obvious one, isn't it? It needs to be of a decent quality, and by that I mean not blurry or pixelated (unless it's MEANT to be), this is usually achieved by using a decent file extension on the images, try .png, that's the one I use, and it seems to work for me- but some computers dont support .png formats, so if you can't save .png files, try .jpg or something. No .bmp, or default Paint extensions, because they're just crummy."
I find a lot of problems with this paragraph. If png isn't supported by "some computers," then why not use jpeg at a high-ish quality? And you could elaborate more on why not to use .bmp or "default Paint extensions" besides their crumminess.
"What also helps on the layout scheme of things, is decent colour combinations (oh, come ON, if it doesn't work, don't do it), and nice images or whatever. Celebrity images are okay, to a certain extent, but not too many of them, because it's basically breaking the law. I do like celebrity layouts, if they're classy, but I'm immediately turned off when someone trys to "cut-out" a celebrity with the blend tool, I mean, the faded edges just looks BAD. You'd think people would learn.. But Nooooo.."
I have no idea what you are talking about here. Maybe get rid of this paragraph, or provide examples? Celebrity images aren't okay to any extent if you use the reasoning of basically breaking the law. I didn't know breaking the law a little was okay.
I just noticed your footer. The bright green doesn't match the rest of your layout :P
"all content on ELECTRIC.voltagebox.org is (C) Emily Davies 2007-2008. "
Err...no, it's not? Also, you should use & copy; (without the space) instead of (C).
In conclusion, your site's strong point was definitely the writing in the visitor content. Just a little more tweaking overall and your site would be much better ^^

First Impressions/Layout
Alllrighty so first off I notice your tacky title "!' e l e c t r i c this heart beats only for you" not a good first impression. What's wrong with just "Electric"? Then I notice the big gap between the side and your side bar. Mooove it over a lot. In my screen shot with doodlings you can see what I mean.
Also your sidebar is cluttered with things:( like your "babies" and that random site banner under "Welcome". I'd also like to see your about me written in sentences not like "Liz. 15. USA. Taken. ect..." The navigation is so far down it took me a bit to find it: Also your layout is a good width both the content and the sidebar. With that in mind I would increase the text size by a bit. What's with the "2 people love me" if you're going to put the comment link outside your entry why not just put it on the top or just on the bottom not both. On the top it is a bit distracting and takes the attention away from your layout.
Ahhh your layout...I love paramore and all but yeah you are using Celebrity Images taken by another photogropher if you don't not have permission from the person who took them you know it's illegal to use them correct? These so called "web designers" like to steal celeb pictures they didn't take chop them up and splatter them with brushes. You use CUTENEWS?!?!!! Switch to fanupdate immediately! Using this blogging script puts your site at risk of being hacked.Pages
-EMILY (About the owner)
I just noticed your footer ohhdear:( back ward and forward links? Thats what backwards forwards and refresh buttons in your browser are for. The google search bar there is rather pointless too I would put it in the sidebar. The "place of residence" is rather immature.
-ELECTRIC (Site)
Nothing I have anything to comment on history of your site is well written.
-CONTENT (Resources)
"Writings"? I'd change that to "Articles".
Graphics
-Banners
Get rid of these having all celebrity graphics doesn't mean you're a "graphic designer" it means you can take a picture in ps/psp and hit lighten on it and erase some of it and splatter it to death in brushes and maybe play with colors.
-Icon Bases
*Sigh* so this proves you can format a copyrighted picture so it's 100px by 100px? Why not use stock photos?
-Photography
I really like these! Why not make icons of these or other nature scenes?

More celeb pictures: this needs to stop.Writings (Articles)
I think the song lyrics you made are are pretty interesting yet corny but it's unique I really like it. Then your website article...you say you don't like celeb images and to an extent it's "okay" it is not okay to even have one! And the majority of your content is celebrity images anyway.Overall
You need to get rid of celebrity images! Write some more non-celeb content such as articles and photography. I can see the effort and I know you can make graphics with non celebrities that are better.Using Firefox on Windows | Report This?
