Online With Meghan

****- (Rated by 3 people, viewed by 113 people)

Online With Meghan is a personal site I use mainly for a place to post photos for family and friends to snag. I have a section where I plug my two favorite artist's art...my sister Julie and Josephine Wall. I also have a pet care section that I am looking to expand so that it is useful to a general audience. I am an amateur coder. I type out simple html, but am open to learning new stuff.

Hey Megan! :) I thought I'd do a quick review of your site.

First, let me start off by saying I think you've come a long way since you startd out. I remember when you had that sideways layout when you first applied to The Quilting Bee. I think you've definitely learned a few things and made considerable progress since then. :)

I like the colors you're using on your site. You don't really see that shade of purple used very often on websites. And I like how you use that background color for the text too.

Now I'll comment on some of your pages.

About Me: I wish you had a little more on your "Me in a Paragraph" page. You share some interesting information, but it leaves me wanting more. Some of your subpages give more insight into you and your personality, but I'd still like to see more information on your actual about page.

My Pets: I loved reading about your pets! :) I always love when people share their pets on their site. I enjoyed the photos of them too. (I also like your cats' names from the musical Cats!)

Family/Friends: I enjoyed reading about your family and friends! I like how you divide the pages up and tell a little bit about each person along with the pictures. :)

Animals: You have so much information about animals! I enjoyed this section very much. I always meant to look up how old my cat is in human years, but keep forgetting. She's 88! Wow! My cat has FIV, so I found the FeLV page interesting. I gravitated toward the cats pages more than any other since I have a cat, however all of your pages are very informational.

Art: That's cool that your sister designed a tattoo for you! These pages loaded very fast even with all of the thumbnails. I've never heard of Josephine Wall, but her artwork is amazing!

Your current layout has been up for awhile. I'd like to see something new from you. I enjoyed visiting your site. It truly is a personal site! :)

Ok, hi. I am Steph. I try not to be too harsh and I think I'm quite a fair reviewer but sorry if I get carried away lol.

Ok, first of all, I will start off with the style / design, i.e the layout. The quality of the images does not seem to be of a very high standard. Correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like a Microsoft Paint job. For the best image quality, you are better off using a software such as Adobe Photoshop. You can start off with a trial version first as well to see if you like it or not.

The colour seems a bit dull. It is quite surprising as to the likelihood of a visitor returning just because of the colour of your website. Don't get me wrong - I love the colour purple but I think it would look better it was brighter maybe? With the image mapped links, I think it's a lovely idea but I think you should have an alternative navigation too for those who can't access it.

Now for the content... I've read some of your blog and even though you have huge gaps in between posts, you post quite long blogs. You;re writing is quite mature and you show your personality which is good in a blog! I would have liked to have read a bit more about you in writing rather than in pictures because it shows your personality more. I feel like I know more about your family and friends than you! I do like the idea of using those small thumbnails to show your favourites though. I've never seen that done before! I enjoyed reading the "Animals" pages. I especially enjoyed the exotice care pages. I have two guinea pigs myself so it was quite interesting to read that. The art work was also nice to see - perhaps you could put some of your own art work up there too?

On to coding. I won't go in to too much detail on coding because I am not an expert in this area. The only thing I did notice is that I don't think you have a style sheet. I think a style sheet is the most important part of designing a website layout. Then again, it could just be personal choice.

I must say, I think your site is very original and you clearly show your individuality. Not a very orginal site name but it does the job. I just wanted to point out that you have "November 20, 2007 - January 18, 2008" on your past layouts page. Today's date is within those dates there so how come there is no holiday layout? P.S. I really like the cat layout!

Overall, I think you have really lovely ideas for your site but I would suggest having a brighter layout and possibly more about you? I know it says "Me in a paragraph" but maybe you could make it a long paragraph lol. I have given you four stars for it's uniqueness (if that is a word lol).

By the way, sorry for any typos!

Thank you for your thought. My coding experience is extremely limited. I learn as I go..I'll see a cool effect on someone's page or I'll imagine something I want to have happen on my page and then I'll hunt down how to do that in online tutorials. I SHOULD get off my lazy butt and read a book or something so I know all the basics (like style sheets) and can build from there. :)

I use MS paint a lot, mostly for my QBee pixeling, but occasionally elsewhere. I have a photo editor, but I've been kinda afraid to try Adobe...I honestly don't know why. :P

Today's date is not within Nov 20, 2007 and Jan 18 2008. I updated to the current layout from the holiday layout January 18, 2008...11 months ago. I am working on a new update right now though and I will take your color suggestion to heart.

Thank you for the compliment on my originality. And I never knew I showed my personality so much through my writing, I like your idea of writing more.

Thank you for your review. :)

    Hi Meghan,
So I'm going to review your site today. There aren't any other reviews up yet (which seems to be a recurring theme for my reviews) but I've been here before and now's my chance to let you know what I think .... I'll be nice I promise.

    First Impression.
I like your background, and I like the color you have for behind your pictures. But the quality of the image is a little shaky. I think that I like that you have pictures for your links, but I'm wondering about people with slower internet connections, it may take a long time to load. You don't want to scare people away before they look around at everything.

    Me page
I like how you have a short description and then stuff on the other side to add more to it. Your cats name are very unique! I seem to like everything about your site. It's hard to come up with something constructive (other than image quality). Perhaps for the headers instead of underlining your pets' names, you might just make it a different color or different size or something. Your cross stitches are really detailed, I would like to see more of ones you made yourself though.
My same comment, instead of using bold for headers you should look into using the various headers there are six levels so you can have a main header a sub header and then section headers and style them differently (or not) so that it breaks the page up a bit.
I like how you have your zodiac stuff up, I did not know there were so many, and there is so much to read here! I should be taking notes.
:) You have a LOT of fanlistings, it is good that you have them separated. The vet tech pictures were cool, too.

    Family
I didn't go through this too thoroughly, it looks just like personal pictures, and I didn't want to spy.
    Friends
Same thing as above. You have a lot of pictures, and as far as my connection goes, it loads quickly.

    Animals
This page has a lot of stuff on it. I'm not sure what you could do to add to it, but I think your idea of expanding it is a good one. It seems to be a passion of yours and it shows. My only suggestion is to read through what you have to proof some of it. I only caught one thing, one instead of on at the very end of the cat's first vet visit. That's all I saw, but I wasn't looking too carefully before that. From reading though the rest looks okay, though. I didn't know my cats were so old (at my parents house they are 12/64).
Perhaps to add to this, you could put some more stuff up about animals that don't have to do with pet care, but stories about pets or something ... I'm not sure what I'm thinking of, but something like poems or quotes or other things like that.

    Art
Maybe you could include some other art than just these two artists. Also you may want to break up your pages into several pages because there are a lot of paintings on each page.

I think the biggest thing is just your headers, and maybe your images. I remember coming to your site before and it had this same layout up. So you might want to just make a whole new one for some spice. I like how you have things set up though, so in my opinion you don't have to change things too much. I see you've been away from the internet for a while, so maybe this will be something that you don't do right away. Or if you do, it might get you in the swing of things again.

You have a lot to offer, but I seem to have made my shortest review yet. Not too much that I would do differently I guess. :)

    trombgirl's Response:

Thank you for your review. I was really nervous about adding my site to here. I haven't changed my layout in a while for several reasons....the first is that I've been away from the internet for awhile so haven't had a chance to get bored with it yet (lol), the second is that it took me so darned long to put together, and the third is that I find it pretty. But none of that means the challenge of a new layout wouldn't also be fun. The thought has actually been toying around in the back of my mind. I will definitely take your header suggestion to heart and that'll be an improvement in my new layout. The separate pages for pictures is a good one also. As far as picture quality, I fuzzed them out on the edges on purpose and tried to go for a soft look, but perhaps I went to far?

I like your idea of animal stories and poetry. So far I've just been concerned with just getting important pet information out there. Softening up the section a bit and making it more personal and fun sounds good. I've found really great artists on the web whose art I'd also like to display on my page but I haven't gotten any responses to my requests to display it and I'm not going to display anything without permission. Maybe I should take the whole section down until I can beef it up?

Thanks again for your feedback. I appreciate your time. :)
