Bitch In Black

This is my online portfolio, with what I consider to be my best artwork done over the last two years. I took the liberty of making sure all the coding on my index page is valid, and am currently in the process of checking all the other pages in the site.

I'm viewing your page in mozilla firefox.

layout / css: 7 / 1O ; I'm quite undecided on your layout. The text is very bright, prehaps go for a grey or dimmer colour for the writing, as white can be blinding. Besides that, i quite like the layout. It's simple and effective.

Links / Navigation: 9 / 1O; I absoloutely loved your navigation! The texts is big, bold, and stands out. The link hover is cute and i adore how there is a drop down sub menu. It saves room on your page, although i got very confused when i clicked 'Blog' and it opened a new window with a completely different page. Maybe include your blog within the Bitch In Black frames?

Uniqueness: 7 / 1O; I certainly haven't seen a site like it before. The navigation is certainly something i don't usually see on pages and may i add that your work is extraordinary! I don't have much else to write on this topic to be honest.

Popularity: 6 / 1O; I was visitor 25O8 to your page. Is this a general hit counter, or unique hits? After refreshing the page, it's not 251O. I hadn't heared about your site before now.

Content: 6 / 1O; A few examples of your work spread out amongst many different pages. I got bored looking on pages such as 'Admired Artists'. As far as i was concerned, it was a bunch of links with no explanation.

Overall: 35/ 5O; Forgive me if i miscalculated. I'm no good at mathematics, and i counted them up in my head. i Guess the scores arent relevent though.

comments: The one thing i need to mention first is the name. Some viewers may be offended by the term 'Bitch'. It doesn't bother me, but i feel it needs to be mentioned. Most people would be put off by it. I'd like to say how much i love your work and i'm inspired by your page. It's quite gothic (don't be offended if you werent aiming for that contrast), and taking it personally, i'm quite a gothic person, so i was drawn to your site. I think iv've covered everything i want to say! Well done and keep up the good work!

I have a unique taste from most people so I'm sure my review may be different from everyone elses.

First I don't like the title...... not sure why you chose to use the work "Bitch", not very classy to me. But that's about the only thing I don't like.

I love the design of the site. I love dark colors & dark themes so it really is eye catching to me. I love the menu & the hover animation with the blue light under the button your mouse is hovered over is nice. I love the logo. I don't think it's too bright & I love the blue integrated into it.

I don't have a problem with iFrame sites, I like them. But some people have browsers that don't support it so it's not always a good idea to use them though like I said, I do like your site just the way it is.

I love your work & I also like the way the gallery is setup. You have a dark, unique style to your art which really amazes me. So I say keep up the good work! :)

The name "Bitch in Black" is a nickname I have had for almost 8 years. It was based on an online clique a friend of mine owned back then, geared towards strong, independent women who were not afraid of the word "bitch": women who saw it as a positive mantra rather than a negative connotation.

Am I actually a bitch? Sometimes I can be. I don't find anything insulting in the term. *shrug*

    First Impressions:
Your layout is very simple; a little too simple? That's just me though. You can make a layout simple, yet very nice. I'm not a huge fan of beveled/3D-type navigation buttons, but I do like the hovers that you made for the navigation.
I would also suggest getting a more simple font to use for your main text in your blog. It just doesn't seem...right. I don't really know how to explain it, but try switching to an easier font like Arial, Verdana, etc.
Also, the copyright text at the bottom of the page isn't clear. Try not to go overboard with the effects.
Since your layout is very simple, I would try to have better CSS, or try Flash. Usually portfolio sites use flash, and I think it would make your site a lot more professional looking.

    Gallery:
I like your Photo manipulations! I'm also a big fan of that type of art.
Your other links are loading slow for me; I don't know if it's just your site or my internet.
Anyway, I also like your photography, it's really nice. I'm not going to go through every single one, but so far all of your artwork is really nice, and I like how you used the pop-up script to display your art.

Overall, your site's pretty good. I would suggest trying better CSS to make your site more professional looking. First impressions count!

*shrug* I think my site looks very professional. It's my style, and my taste. =/

And I wanted to stay away from Flash because it would make my site go slower. CSS loads faster than Flash.

    Thanks for the review.

First impression, uh oh an iframe...then wow that logo is bright and stands out.. almost a little too much.
I'm really not caring much for you navigation. I wouldn't mind it so much if it was a click on then it opens and stays open but just opening as you hover over it and closing right after is a bit annoying. Sometimes it closes as I am scrolling through the list and I don't get a chance to read all the links there. Also if you are going to have an off site link in your navigation mark it somehow, or move it to a links page.

The text that shows what day you wrote a post, and your seperator text is too dark for me to read. I would suggest finding a lighter shade to put those in. I also noticed you used spacing in your normal font through out the whole site. I would suggest not doing this as it makes the text more difficult to read the farth spaced out it is. It's ok for header font or font that breaks up sections but for a paragraph it's not such a grand idea.

I think the iframe should go. If google picks up any page other than your main one the visitor will have no navigation to go to and no layout therefore that person will most likely leave without even visiting your main page. If you really want something like an ifram I suggest using a scrolling div. They are just as nice.

Moving on, you have typical info about the site, your education is laid out plain and simple. Your exibitions, thumbnails please! I didn't know what I was clicking on. It'd be nice if you added some descriptions to each image too so veiwers will know exactly where and what was going on. The titles are good but it would be nice to have just a bit more info. As I move on to the press page... again thumbnails would be grand.

The gallery, it looks nice, your photomanips are really good as are you photos. They are orgnised nicely and the thumbnails are big enough to see everything well enough. The digital paintings are nice, I like the contrast in some. Everything else is great and I have nothing else to say on it.

Your commission info is straight forward enough. Again thumbnails for your commissioned work. I do want a bit of a sample of what I'll be looking at before I click.

Links links links, fair collection of them, I like that you have an admired artists section. And lastly your contact form and link banners, both are good.

So overall you have some great content, I just think your layout is too dark and needs some work. You have so much talent in photography and digital manipulation it would be really awesome to see a layout made from photos you took, and to still fit your site's title keep them bw and darker, but not as dark as you have it now. I'd also tone down your logo a bit up there. It really draws attention but that should be focused on the content, not the logo, and try to fix the nav so it doesn't snap closed so fast after the mouse cursor leaves it.

http://www.tutorialtastic.co.uk/tutorial/semantic_css_block_navigation Check out this page for roll over navigation stuff. Not sure if that's what you are aiming for but either way this site is excellent.

    MirandaAdria's Response:

I was just now reading the article on this site about iframes, and I am learning how to convert out of them.

Thank you very much for your input. I will take your suggestions into consideration, and I appreciate the time you took to review my site. =)

    UPDATED 21 Dec 08:
These are the changes I have currently done:

-- Added a Blog button to the index page for easier access.
    -- Made the logo smaller
-- Made the page titles lighter.
-- Minimized the spacing in the titles. I didn't want to remove the spacing completely, so I compromised and simply lowered the spacing number a bit.

I am currently working on making thumbnails for the pages you specified. I actually brought this up in my class this past semester (since this site was both my own project and work for an assignment) and he thought it was better to have links. I do agree, though, that thumbnails would be better.

I am also trying to find a way to make the menu a click menu. If anyone has sites with coding for this, PLEASE link me. I have tried a number of different codes, but this rollover method was the only one that worked for me.

    Again, thank you.

    UPDATED 22 Dec 08:
Actually, I found a different site and I was able to accomplish a click menu. Thank you for the link, though. :)

I do not think I will be removing the iframe for this particular layout. I have put so many hours into this particular layout as it is, and quite frankly, I'm exhausted. However, my next layout, I will remove the iframe and have a different setup.

P.S. Thank you for changing my rating. <3
