My personal blog where I talk about meaningless things and like to think that people find it interesting. I doubt it, but that ain't gonna stop me.

11 reviews later, a lovely ice-cream themed layout. Looks like turd in IE6, but otherwise I'm pretty happy.

With the risk of sounding like some ancient prudish old lady: "it's so bold" is what first came to my mind. It's not actually off turning, just rather odd. Probably because it looks extremely "artificial".

    = Layout =
    --------------------------
You had the swan layout before, right? I remembered that when I saw your site title, but didn't actually click right from the start. I must say this design appeals to me much better. It has contrast! Oh now I notice, your favicon is still the swan.

At a first glance things look rather refreshing, and make use of the "drawing" style I've really come to like these past few months. On a closer look, I get the impression of cramped space. You use way too little padding. It seems as if someone told you to use padding and you put some small figure in there to show that you do. Lack of appropriate padding makes it hard to focus on the text. This is especially apparent on your sidebar. At one point you get lines with 3 word on them?

Theoretically speaking, your sidebar's width is fine... according my oh-so-professional preferences at least. Nevertheless, you don't use this space "correctly". First of all you have this rather "long" (height-wise) description of yourself. I see you have an "About Me" section. It's fine to have these things there. Aside this, the picture you use there is too large. It takes up half of the alloted space, leaving approximately 100px (width-wise) for the text.

Welcome messages (if any) should be found on top of your home page. And they should be brief, no more than a few words. You don't have to squeeze every single relevant information about you/your site in here. You merely have to (try to) entice your visitor to browse more. My suggestion is: do not put more text that spans over more than two lines on your sidebar. Things here are merely supposed to be some pointers, not additional reading materials... with the possible exception of your latest "twits" (I really don't like that word).

All in all, I have this odd feeling that I'm just flailing madly trying to find something wrong in an otherwise good layout. At a general glance, it's a really cute and functional one, but the lack of padding really irks me... oh, the RSS Feed image is really cute :)

Things look fine, your writing style is quite a bit above average. On your comments page, I'm not too sure about the link color for the commenter. It's bold and has a larger font-size, which does make it more visible, however a darker shade of peach (I'm really bad at shade names... ) would have been a better choice. This way, there wouldn't be a reason to have such large text for a commenter's name. Sure they're important... but practically delegating a role of mini-heading to every commenter's name is a bit of an overkill. Darker text color will give larger contrast, and thus will diminish the need to make the text bold and larger.
Oh, on the bottom of the comment form I see a checkbox that is... checked. Aside this, no additional text seems to be near it. Experience tells me, this is probably for "remembering" commenters' personal info input data. Despite that, it doesn't look like a fully functional checkbox if you don't properly state its purpose. Also, try not to glue its upper part to the submit button.

I'm a huge fan of larger footers. I like seeing all that information, nicely grouped into organized columns. But three lines of centered text is just... to me, it looks highly untidy. Furthermore, let's see the use of displaying this on every page of your layout.
    1) Powered by Wordpress and copyright to Ann - this is basically a copyright information that I generally expect to see on every footer, so it's fine.

    2) Hosted by Ethan - of course, hosts are very important, most especially if they do you a favor for free. I'd have personally put this on the footer of every page, but I suppose, that since it's on the same line as the rest, it can stay. Only, perhaps you'll consider moving it to a new sentence. It's not strictly copyright related.

    3) Named by Amanda - this is something more suited to an about or credits page. Or... a page where you talk about the current version's name. Not that it's a bad thing to link her... but this doesn't really seem like such a vital information, that needs to be displayed on every page.

    4) Valid XHTML/CSS - this may sound quite hypocritical because I used to do it for quite a long time as well. But this is really useless to be stated. Unless someone's reviewing your site's coding, or actively trying to find fault in it, there's no reason anyone (other than yourself) would care about this.
Incidentally, your comments page doesn't validate. According to my HTML Tidy FF extension, the jQuery code around the last blog post title is not quite correct. Check your apostrophes and slashes.

The rest I guess, can stay... although "my quiting bee" link is also a prime candidate for sidebar link... IMHO, of course. :P

    - About Me -
The writing style you use for the self description is really good. I can't exactly say that I was compelled to read novels about you, but I wouldn't mind reading a few more pages.

Now that I look at the sidebar, I see that you have a "where am I" section. This is good I suppose, however, you tend to state some rather obviously things. For example no one will have any doubts that "about me" is a page that speaks about everything related to you (the webmistress). Instead, why not use "high-lighted" tabs to show which section the visitor is in?
You can do this by using Wordpress' conditional tags: http://codex.wordpress.org/Conditional_Tags
There are also examples there on how to use them.

    - Site -
Pretty comprehensive history, similar to how most of us started out. Nevertheless it's a fun reading.

    - Links -
You really need to change the colors, because these are quite hard to read.

... and that's it? Heh, yeah I don't really have anything against blog only sites. Just that I don't review blog posts (which is why I barely touched upon yours). You have an interesting writing style, so how about writing some more... aside blogs?

    = Coding =
    -----------------------------
In order to have a horizontally repeating background starting at a specific position, you don't need to use an image which such height. It's easier if you just use background positioning. I'm sure you're familiar with positions such as :bottom left, top right, center. These are relative positioning. You can however specify a position by using either pixels or percentages.

    for example:

    background: url('image.jpg') 2px 50px repeat-x;

This mean that the background image named "image.jpg" should start repeating horizontally from a distance of 2px from the left, respectively 50px from the top of the browser window. The two numbers are in fact coordinates in a rectangular coordinates system... or I think that's what they're called. You use them in Maths to draw graphs of functions :P

Instead of pixels, you can also use percentages. These are more useful when you are not sure about the exact measurements. For example, if you want the image to repeat horizontally around the same area in every resolution.

Next, I see that you have a div named "bg" with no content. What's the use for it? I can't seem to find a definition for it in your stylesheet either.

Aside these little details (I like to nitpick ... a LOT :P ) your coding's clean and semantic. Well done!

    Score: 3.5/5

Aside a few problems with padding and the link colors there's nothing fundamentally "wrong" with your site. Well... wrong is also such a harsh word. It's just that... there wasn't anything that actually called to me, and made me spend eons here. This is not necessarily bad. There probably are other people who like this style. Nevertheless, your site is above average so it deserves more than 3 stars.

'Aww a swan!' that's my first thought about your layout. Overall, I think it's nice and simple -- my type.

    Coding and Validation:
You have one little error. Have a look at it here. I think you have forgotten to close a li tag. As for your Cascading stylesheet, the original stylesheet passed but there are 16 errors. However, the other stylesheet for IE did not pass. The Validator states that there negative values are not allowed in your #header.

    Layout:
The navigation is not hard to spot. As for the content font size, I personally perfer larger font. Perhaps you can increase the line-height too? As for the footer, they are neat and nice. The only 'mistake' I noticed is the 'Info' size. It's slightly smaller than the others. Is it a mistake or have you made it purposely?

    Overall Comment:
I can hardly find any mistakes in your site. I'll give you 4 and a half stars because there's still a little mistake. So, good luck (:!

    First Impression:

I'm impressed, it looks simple and the colors are so mellow. It's relaxing. I can see that the text is easy to read and nothing is standing out with a big, red alert saying, "OUT OF PLACE!". You know what I mean? :) It's all meshed together perfectly. I think I am going to enjoy being here!

    Coding:

Your coding passes validation for both CSS and XHTML. That's fantastic. :) There are 18 warnings for your CSS, though, in case you are interested in fixing those. They are all just warnings about colors, so it's nothing pressing.

I see that you use shorthand in your CSS which is wonderful, that is my big thing right now. Promoting shorthand and clean CSS. It makes it easier to edit too, ya know?

Really, the rest of your coding looks good at a glance as well. You also passed as HTML tidy. Well done, well done! Let's just move right along then, shall we? :D

    Design:

Like I said before, your design is soothing. There are just a few minor things I would like to suggest for your consideration.

I adore the swan header immensely, but it sort of bothers me how certain spots on him look like hey were blurred. I think he/she would look very nice if the lines were more crisp and clean. The footer image doesn't look as blurry but maybe a couple of spots.

The navigation looks marvelous, but I think it would look better if you made the font bolded. As is it, it doesn't stand out as much as I think it should. Also, I think if you used a darker blue for the font color when you hover over the navigation, it would look better.

Since you have so much text in your blog, I think that making the line height bigger would help a lot. It looks kind of crunched together as it is. Also maybe make the font one or two sizes bigger, now that I look closer?

I was wondering what the 'Notes' section in your footer was for? There is never anything in it on any of the pages... :( Was it supposed to be an Asides kind of thing? I think it would look better if you just got rid of the 'Notes' and moved the 'Info' over a bit more (maybe not all the way to the middle, though) because then you could see that lovely little footer illustration without text and stuff over it!

Also, I am not positive about this but perhaps if you made the page/post titles a bit bigger it would look better? They do stand out as it is, but I think if they were a bit bigger it would look nicer.

Now, let me "Oooh" and "Ahh" over your layout please. Ooooh, ahhhh! XD It's so pretty, it makes me incredibly jealous! I simply cannot do pretty, simple things like this. I always make everything way bigger or flashier than it should be. It's simply wonderful the way you have your site set up. :)

    Content:

Hmm.. how is it possible that your 'About Me' page and your 'About' pages have the exact same Permalink? They are both http://ann.paperairplanes.nu/about/ ... I don't understand that at all. :S I think maybe also you should add the 'Me' after the title on your about me page. Right now it just says 'About' and I think it would be more effective with the 'Me' tacked on the end. :)

Oh.. I see you used a template for your site? No matter. It's much better than using a free layout, I think. If you make changes and graphics yourself, I commend you for that. Also, a lot of times when people use templates, they end up screwing up the coding and validation. You have not done this, so I still sit in awe of your layout. :3

I think on the link page, it would be nice if you could add some column usage so that it's not just a super-long vertical list. It's just kind of long and stretching out the page a bit much.

There is an awful lot to read in your content, yet there are no pictures save for the one in your footer. If you don't like the idea of having photos up, why not make some more cute illustrations to go on different pages? It's a bit boring, what with all the walls of text on each page.

There isn't very much content, aside from your blog. I find it hard to stay entertained on blog sites because usually this is the case. I think, however, I shall add you to my RSS reader and start stalking you. :) I enjoy the way you write and you sound like someone who does not want to dramatize the entire world with your blog (thank goodness).

    Final Thoughts:

Some more stuff! *stamps feet* I'd love to see some more photos of you, you look like a little doll in the one that is up!

I'd also love to see (in the future, of course) a design that you made without the use of a template. It's so much fun to get your hands dirty and code it yourself. It always gives me a nice feeling afterward.

I love the swan illustration, so why not make some graphics for others to use? I know this isn't everybody's "thing", but I think you have great potential for it. I know my greedy little arse would love to see some. If you didn't want to offer it to others, why not just show it off as an art section?

So overall, your site is pretty good. Just needs some filler, it's so thin! ;)

I am giving you a 3/5 simply because there isn't much content at all. The layout is good, just needs minor changes, but the fact that you didn't code it... Well, like I said there is nothing wrong with that. I just feel weird giving you uber stars I guess. Ugh! Please don't be mad at me. T_T

I'm loving your layout, the swan's a really nice idea and I like the details in the footer. There are a few things I'd change though. Firstly it's the squiggly lines on the swan; I think that it would look a lot better if the lines were smoother. Also the fact that there is a cattail covering up some of your blog entry. I think that the layout is a little lacking in darker colours; it's all a bit pastel-ly at the moment. I'd make the background of the navigation a darker blue, to break up the lighter colours. As I said before, I love the little pictures in the footer. The paragraph about you is nicely written and says a lot about you. The magic words "David Tennant" helped too :D

Your "About" page held my amazingly short attention span until the end of the page, so full marks for that one. Same for your "Site" page. I love your writing style, it made me laugh (I'm guilty of rambling pointlessly too) and it all fitted together in a way that kept me reading. Perhaps you should write some more pages to go with the "About" page and the "Site" page? I'd like to read more.

First Impression: A little plain, but nice. I like the drawings in the header and footer. The colors are nice on the eye.

Main Page: Everything seems fine. Enough padding, the font color is good to read on the background. The only thing I don't like is the top border on your footer. I don't know if it would look better without a border, but it looks like the reed is getting chopped up :)

Footer: You have nice information in the footer. I like the bee flying around ;) The only thing I don't like about the footer is your "INFO" section. It looks like "eh, I don't know what to put here, so.. here ya go" :). I'd remove the search field to the bottom of that column, maybe offer a RSS link... things like that.

Navigation: I'd make it stand out a bit more. The header has almost the same color so I'd make the navigation background a deeper shade of blue. Other than that it's nice. Simple and clean.

About: WAY too less information ;) The paragraphs you have written are nice though and the visitor gets an idea of who you are.

The "notes" in the footer aren't being displayed though, same with your other pages.

Site and Links: Hm, not much there really. Nothing much to say about it. It's nice :)

It's a nice small site which hardly needs any improvement. Keep it up :)

Overall, I like the theme of the site. It's simple, and pretty. However, the illustrations pull away from this somewhat, as they seem rather unfinished. I feel that the theme would have been much more successful without the illustrations all together.

    To the content ...

I found your blogs quite interesting to read, and I find this the most important aspect of personal sites. You have quite a humorous way of writing, and it's not easy to pull off in many cases. That being said, you've done a good job at keeping the blog entries consistent, so props to you.

    About:
Your about page is very detailed, providing a great insight as to who you are as a person. Naturally, I have to give you more props because you're a fellow science geek. haha. It was nice to learn about you with such a detailed page. A lot of webmasters skimp out on their about me page, so good on you for keeping it detailed.

    Site:
Likewise, I enjoy how detailed this is. It might be a little excessively detailed for a Site page, so it may be worthwhile to cut it down so it's a little more succinct, or even split it into two pages.

Not much to say about the link page. Well set out, i suppose. :)

Overall, the site functions well and the content is appropriate and well thought out. Well done.

Well, to start off, I'm not entirely sure what to think of the gigantic swan sitting atop your blog. It looks as though you went over an image of a swan with the pen tool. Assuming you did so, it was very messily done. The head and neck look fine, but once we get to his rear end it looks as though you got lazy. The random bits of blurring take away from the cleanliness, too. What did you do that, anyway? I'm sure it would look perfectly fine without it. I also don't like how the ripples go outside of the box. I dunno, it just looks queer. I do give you credit, though, for thinking outside of the box (no pun intended) and using a lineart. I haven't seen to many sites do that.

Anyway, other than your messily-lined swan, your layout is... well, pretty. A little lifeless for my taste, but pretty all the same. Nice and spacious. No issues with clumpy text. I like the color scheme you used, too. The blues, greens, and pale yellow look very nice together. I like your navigation links and your content section (although it looks a bit odd; did you put more padding on the right side than the left?) I do, though, think you should get rid of the alt for your navigation links. I can see that I'm clicking "About," so I really don't need a little box coming up saying so. It's impractical.

Your footer looks pretty good. I'm not really crazy about the gigantic cattail. It's far too big and drowns everything out. Don't get me wrong, it's an adorable idea, but it's fairly large. I think it would better if it were smaller. That Q-bee icon is also horribly distracting... does it really have to be animated?

As for your "About" section, it's very well put together and has a good flow. I find it kind of ironic that you listen to heavy metal with such a quiet, serene layout (featuring a swan and cattails, no less). But hey, whatever floats your boat.

Again, your "Site" section is wonderfully flowy and informational. A bit boring, but I can't say I've found an explanation of someone's webdesigning history that really is interesting. You could shorten it up a bit, though, to make it less monotonous.

Last, but not least, your "Links" section. There's really nothing to review here, though. Just links to different websites.

First Impression: When I first visited your website, the swan was the one that flashed right in front of my monitor. I personally like the "idea" of the swan, but not so much on the smudgy lines.

Navigation bar: The simplicity of your navigation bar is absolutely awesome, but I think the background color of your navigation bar makes it look a bit awkward, but that's just me.

Container: The bottom half of your page looks fine as I can see the mix of colors going on and I must say that the swamp is absolutely wonderful. But I do have a tiny bit of a problem with the top half of the page. The color of the heading of your post is green, and your header is light blue. I think that it would be better if you put some kind of green stuff on your header instead of plain blue. Although the color brown for your site title is a nice touch.

Footer: I love the design of your footer, the swamp, the bee, and all those mix of colors are awesome. But the "extremetracking" icon is just too "blah" maybe you could resize it a bit, or make it a bit softer so it can "blend in with your overall look."

Overall: I think your site is very decent, in terms of the simplistic design which I adore very much. I like the fact that your graphic images blends with the whole look of your website.

*extra fixes: I just noticed that when I scroll into your "next page>>" your container resized a bit, you should fix the the style of it. I like the first look of it, but I don't like it when I "hover" on it. The color, once again, is truly smashing.

I think that your layout is super adorable. It's calming, and I also fine the name "Symphonic," to be calming. I love the word symphonic, and in fact, my first domain was symphonic-love.net!

I am undecided on the smudgey swan thing. I think the swan is gorgeous. And I think it would look cool with sharper lines. But I also adore the soft elegance of it! I think you need to pick one and go all the way with it, since part of the swan is soft and other bits aren't. Try both, and see which one you prefer!

Finding a way to make the text wrap around the cattail in the footer (i.e. creating a 90-ishx110ish div, and positioning it in the bottom right corner of the div that holds your text) would look a lot better than the big block of white next to your text.

Your footer is lovely as well, but the extreme tracking thing DOES NOT match at all. You should try something a little more discrete.

You have a few coding errors. Mainly they are missing alt attributes, which should be an easy fix. But also you are apparently missing the end tag for your wrapper div. Also an easy fix.

Your about page is well written with a nice, light, airy tone. So, I assume, other than your love for metal music, that you are a nice, light, airy person. You come off as thoughtful, without being pretentious. Your site page does the same thing.

I just have to take time here to say that I'm really proud of how far you've come in such a short time. *hugs* :P

I would definitely figure out how to keep your notes displaying on all pages as they sometimes disappear and leave a big space.

Also, is there a way to view your archives without having to flip through everything? It may not be a problem to do so while your site is still young, but one day you could end up with several hundred entries, and it can get hectic!

Remove the "comments are closed," bit, please. It's just unnecessary clutter, and also really just irks me on a personal OCD level, haha.

To begin, I really like the feel of your site. It's pretty and calming, and you have a nice color scheme. A lot of people have problems with that.

The rest of your layout is so clean that I think the lines of the swan feel out of place. If those were cleaned up (more crisp, less hazy) I think it'd be even more awesome. Great illustration and I REALLY like that it breaks out of the box - I'm glad you're not afraid to do that. Speaking of the swan, I know your site name is "Symphonic," but I'd love to see a tiny swan as your favicon instead of the music note. :)

I think your footer is also really successful, but I have the same comments about the cattail as I do about the swan - I just feel like the blurred bits detract from the cleanliness of the rest of the layout.

Your tracking code thingy is pretty loud though; perhaps you'd consider using Google Analytics, which requires JavaScript but is invisible on your site. If I recall, the terms of use of whatever you have currently prohibit you from messing with that image (making it 1px by 1px or something) so I won't suggest that, but maybe just look into other stats programs that aren't so visually intrusive.

I like the angle of your photo in the footer. It's fresh and different. I kind of want it to have a little more padding on the right, but it's actually not that bad as-is. You seem neat (I'm a blonde girl who likes heavy metal too!) but to learn more about you, I had to scroll back up to the top of the page - you might want to put a small "More?" link at the end of your blurb in the footer so people can easily get to your about page.

Awh, sometimes you don't have any notes in the footer - is that page-based? An accident? You might consider having a default message (a quote? a recent site update?) if that page doesn't have a specific note. It looks lonely with no content.

In terms of your content area, there's a lot of space on the right and not enough on the left. I think if those were even, the layout would look a lot more balanced and the text would have more room to breathe on the left. Right now it looks accidental that there's such a large discrepancy between the two.

I'd remove the "Comments are closed" notification on pages. Pages don't seem like they'd have comments anyway, so the notice seems like info I just don't need. If comments are open, fine, but if they're not, it seems odd to advertise that they're not if you're on a page, not a post.

Overall, I think you've got a great site here. My suggestions for your site are (for the most part) easily fixable and you seem like you've got a great handle on design and organization.

Hee, it's a swan. I like the openness of your layout (plenty of padding, light colors) and the pastel colors just seem peaceful and friendly. The childishness of the swan image also makes the layout seem peaceful and pleasant. The only thing, at first glance, that seems to not fit is the style of the main navigation. The 'Home', 'About', etc. links are all in a serif font that seems too dim being white on light blue. I would make them sans-serif like the rest of the fonts and maybe dark blue on that light blue, and maybe change the background color of that nav. bar to a light yellow akin to the body background. I think having a different color for the background of the nav. bar would look better anyway, to differentiate it more from the swan image above. It would also be pretty if, on hover, the main links changed background as well as font color.

The footer is also cute, with the little cattail. I love that the Qbee graphic of the buzzing bee fits in with your layout. I dislike that the links in the footer are black with no line underneath, because they really blend in with regular text. I would do something to differentiate them, for clarity. Also, it is unintuitive to me that a pound sign represents a link to comment on your Rev.iew.me note.

Does the Extreme Tracking icon need to be so big? Could you use a text link instead? It's just kind of glaringly different from the rest of your mild, calm layout.

In the main content area, I understand why your text has such a large right margin (the cattail, right?), but it looks odd until you scroll down enough to see the cattail. I would let the text occupy the full width of the content area (with an equal amount of right padding to what there is on the left currently) and just cut the text off early (vertically) or have some div layer of a fixed size in the bottom right corner that could float, covering up the cattail, so that text flows around the cattail.

I dislike how, on your About page, the 'Notes' section in the footer is blank. I think the space could be used for something else (maybe photos from a Flickr account, or something relevant to your About page) if 'Notes' is going to be empty.

In your footer, the Search button wraps around to the next line but it's snug against the search input field. I would put a couple pixels between them so that they don't look cramped.

Is it necessary to have Comments Closed at the bottom of every static page? You could change your comments template to only show that message if there are already comments but comments are now closed.

Overall, not a bad site, and the layout is cute. I would say pay more attention to detail and go for crazy-awesome graphics. Having more content of high quality would be good also (I'm not saying your current content is of low quality, just that there isn't much content period).
