No Offence

****- (Rated by 10 people, viewed by 349 people)

I plan to make No Offence an online display of my poems. It's in its development stage, so there's not much to read, but I would love to receive reviews on the website's design. So please tell me what you think!

i really like your layout! the colors are quite nice, espicially the pink - it looks good combinated with the dark grey. the light grey in the columns with the poems is not that appealing to me, maybe you should use even lighter grey... it looks kinda dead...

and i like the background image in the header very much!

can't wait to read more of your poems ;)

I'll definitely consider lightening the grey. Thanks again.

Hellos! My name is Ivy and I am here to review your site today! :)

Header: I really like your header image, especially when I hover over the image, it glows. :) That's fantastic and cute too.

Layout: I really like the look of it. The vintage-y feel of your layout is awesome. The colors you chose matches and I really do like the colors you have chosen. :) Pink and grey always matches! Why are there three blog spot areas? Is it needed? Why not just go with one? Three blog spot areas may make your site busy with tons of text in the future, so I suggest only one blog area.

Content: You do not any content at all as of now. So it will be good if you had something up soon.

Bottom Bar: I think this is too blog. You should make it smaller as in the text and links for it.

I'm thinking your site is not fully developed yet or not full up yet, so I don't know what to say much. You should've launched everything before putting it up for review so you would know what to add and change.

Hi Ivy :) Thank you so much for taking the time to review my site.
I agree that perhaps using 3 blog areas will cause clutter, but I chose to use them because they'll just contain one poem each, and poems tend to be narrow. If I made the div stretch across the whole page an empty space would be next to the text.
I understand what you mean about my lack of content, and I will add more in the future. I mainly wanted to improve the design of my site first though, before dealing with the content.
I'll consider making the bottom bar smaller, but then there'd be less links D:
Again thank you for the review!

First Impression: Amazing, Love the vintage pattern you used and the hover that you used on the text. Good job, you are a great designer! But I don't like the navigation; about and archives. I hate the font and the text it to big.

Blog: Looks nice, great colors you used.

Content: You don't really have that much on your website.. But the poems are beautiful.

I would give you 5 start for your layout because that is jsut amazing, but you don't have that much on your website that visitors would stay longer. So 4 stars.

I hope you can use this review :)

    Setup-

I like the way things are set-up.

    Navigation-

I love where you put the navigation buttons.

    Colors-

The colors are very bold and yet delicate. It is very appealing to me and I love the header and footers design.

    Content-

I read your one poem and thought it was very beautiful. You definitly have talent.

You make my site look horrible in comparision (sry 4 sp)

    Advice-

Write more content and an about me. I find it helps to know how a person is and how one can relate to the person.

I know my advice is so dumb and ametuer but Im still in 7th grade and my site is 2 days old so I'm learning.

Aww thank you so much for the review! And your advice is not dumb at all lol! It's been helpful; in fact I had forgotten all about the 'about me' page. So thank you again! And keep working on your website!

Altogether, I really like the layout. The organization of the blogs is very unique, and I think it should work really well for showing your poems. The The background image of the header adds some interest and works with the color scheme really well.

    Navigation
The navigation could use a tad more sprucing up. I think a change in the background gradient would work really nicely. Te font color change doesn't feel like it's enough- other than the font size, they're styled identically to the other inline links. In addition, the search box is barely noticeable- you should either put it somewhere else or make it a different color.

    Content Area
Again, I really like how you've organized your content! My suggestion here is that you make the backgrounds of each entry a little more spiffy. You have gradients in the header and footer, but the content area is so...flat. I would recommend adding a really subtle gradient the the entries.

    Footer
My only suggestion for the footer is that towards the bottom, the text gets difficult to read. You should make the bottom color of the gradient a bit darker.

One last thing I would like to add, is that with a classic black and pink color scheme, you should try giving it a bit more depth, and try to implement different shades of pink. For instance, I think a lighter shade would work nicely for the link hovers, as the grey blends in with the content background a tad too much.

Thank you! I've darkened the gradient sand spruced up the navigation a little. I'll try to add some depth to the content area, but I'm not sure this will work because the boxes have different heights. I'll experiment with more shades of pink too. Thanks again :D

I really like the design. The color scheme is great. Just thought I'd let you know that you spelled "offence" wrong, it should be "offense"

Thank you! I've always thought it was spelt with a c, but I googled it and as it turns out, both spellings are right. Or maybe one's the British version and the other's American. Idk.

I enjoy the mixture of blacks, grays, & pinks that you have used for your site. I also like the design. Everything blends & flows very well together. If I added anything it would be a line between the three columns, but then that might take away from the flow. You would have to see.

Unlike Greykitty, I love pink. And I love that it's more or less used as an accent color rather than a main color. I love the concept of the layout, especially the boxes. But, I'm worried that it may be too simple. A flower, a pen or something would look wicked here. I don't know why, but the footer is white, and that just throws the whole thing off. The gray at the top is a bit weird too. You need to move the gradient background/header up. It has something to do with your margins. You may not need it at all. What's more is that the footer doesn't stick to the bottom on shorter pages (like the about page).

I'm also worried about the pink links against the gradient. It's not entirely bad, but I would experiment with another color (perhaps a light gray), just so that isn't not as bad on the eye. I don't know what size your font is for the boxes (you don't even define them), but put it to a slightly larger size. Not too big, but big enough so it's easier to see.

    All in all...

I'm looking forward to reading this site. I'm a writer myself, and so I have a soft spot for writing sites and the like. So hopefully you get all this coding stuff down well so you can get down to the poetry!

The simplicity of your layout is really adorable, but some people may find it to be a little too simple. Maybe you can spice it up a bit? When I first entered your site, nothing really stood out to me as important. That's not good. However, I like how you tried to go for the professional feel.

    The Layout
There are two things that stand out to me more than anything else. The subtitle and your search box. That's not good, because your main title should be automatically capturing my attention. See how your subtitle and search box are white against a dark background? That's exactly what you need for your title. You need contrasting colors like the white and dark gray.

    The Little [Important] Things
You really need to increase the size of text in your text box. Or at least make the text a larger color. Even adding padding would help! It just look so small on large computer screens. This is just personal opinion, and you don't need to worry about this if you don't want to, but I think you should have links on the right side of your subtitle as well. You have "about" and "archives" on the left, and that makes me feel as if the right side is very empty. And the links on the left look so lonely. :(

    Other Stuff
Yay! Your site is completely validated. I'm glad you took the time to do that, because I know it can get annoying sometimes. Also, under your "recent poems" and "recent months" you have links inside of little bars. Would it be possible for you to make the entire bar a link rather than just the test? It would be so much easier for people to click on the box rather than those tiny links. I think the same thing goes for the links you have at the top for the pagination. Make that whole white box clickable rather than just the number. It's not as easy to click the little number as it would be to click the entire box. If you fix those two areas, I think the navigation for your site will be a lot simpler for your visitors. Another small thing. In your footer, when I hover over the links, they turn white. Well, that's a problem since the footer background is also white. I prefer to see my links even while I'm hovering over them, so either change the link hover color or change the footer background. Aww, your little RSS icon is so adorable! :)

    Overall
I think your site is really adorable, and I can tell you do have some great skills. I think the main thing I found wrong with your site was the difficulty of navigation due to the weird setup of links you used. If you just fix a few simple things, I think your site will be ready. I can't wait to read some of your poetry! If you don't mind me asking, does the site's name have any particular significance? Is it supposed to mean something? Just curious! :)

Well I'm not a real big fan of pink, but sometimes it works pretty well. I think right now though your pink is too contrasted against the black. I find it a bit hard to read, especially the smaller text that is over the grey gradient.

The idea of the layout isn't bad, but it feels like there is something missing. So I would suggest making adding a few small graphics here and there to the header text. I would also suggest that you make sure the footer aligns to the bottom and stays there right now it slides half way up the layout and kind of ruins the appearance. I think I would also suggest adding a little more color to the site besides just the text and borders. Maybe add a white border around the pink text because the sub text stands out more than the title of your site.
I think if you added a swirly type logo, with not a whole lot of contrast to it, or something to the footer too. It would add a nice touch to the page I think. Maybe add a background image to each of your little boxes too. Just something light and not much contrast to them. It would be nice if you maybe made the links on your page bold so that they stand out more. The pink does stand out but bolding them just makes it a little bit nicer in my opinion.
Your coding checks out so I don't have anything to say there. :P

For your navigation links I think it would look nice if you made them look like tabs or maybe had an image, like a star or heart pop up in the background when the visitor hovers over them.

It looks like a nice start so far, I don't have all that many suggestions other than to add some images to it to spice it up a bit and add a little more color, maybe some different shades of pink or a complimentary color to the background of those content boxes. You could also try rounding the corners of all your boxes, that might add a bit to the layout as well.
