I really don't personally like dark layouts just because it somewhat depresses me, but how could I count off for something I prefer? I could not! It's just something I have never done or liked because of my old, bad eyes. Something about dark on dark makes me squint.
One suggestion off the bat might be to make your post titles a lot bigger because they kind of blend in with the rest, kind of hard to distinguish. I think another problem with that is the use of bright colors so sporadic. Generally I think it's a good idea to limit the number of super-bright colors and only use one or two where you want certain parts to stand out more than others, maybe your post titles for example!
I also think that it would look really nice if you had some sort of background color for your post entries to distinguish it from the black background, it sort of envelopes the whole layout.
Ok, I'm tarded-- just saw that you have another theme. I am going to switch to it because I have a feeling it will be lighter colors... Yep! It is! Ok, I think the use of color is still a tad bit off, maybe could use a little more contrast? I really, really like the very light grey box around the Time, Category, and Comments. That looks superb! I much prefer the lighter colors, they look so pretty. Maybe still just make the post titles a bit bigger on this one, too. :)
I really did prefer the drop-down menu on the other theme as opposed to the way it is on this theme, but that's really not a big deal. It's just me being lazy. :)
I peeked at your code, just to see if it was as tidy as I thought it would be, and yes. It's so clean. Very good! I am just now trying to learn to be ultra-clean with my coding, the way you code, so I am excited to see it in use. I dunno if that made a bit of sense, so I shall move on now. -.-*
Content:
Oh crap, Sarah. I am a person that says "like" all the time. It's kind of a habit, I can't shake it and I do not notice it unless someone points it out. I'm not a valley girl, so I have no excuses! XD Oh well, at least you don't have to hear me talk on the net, amirite? I think your 'About Me' page is pretty cute, listing things that you do not always see.
I kind of skimmed through the rest of the topics, we have a lot of things in common. Except maybe that I am terrified of guns to the point of maybe passing out if I saw one being used. Haha!
I don't really ever go to sections of a site that have a lot of reads, so I am not going to go into detail on the 'Creative' section, but I did view the topics you wrote about. I really think I should start a dream journal, too. I have vivid dreams as well, usually I just bother my fiance with the details until he starts tuning me out. Sometimes, they get downright WEIRD. Might be entertainment for other people!
Skipping along to downloads now! Even though you only have two wallpapers, those are just gorgeous. I will have to say that the Japanese Foliage brush set is my absolute favorite set of all time. I use it on my layout right now, as a matter of fact! You are so very responsible, asking permission and adding that disclaimer. All too often this type of courtesy is overlooked on the web.
Your avatars are pretty, even better that they are your own photos! I really like your site, you know. I love original content. Oh, I clicked on the free wordpress themes and it took me to a different site. Maybe put a note up to let people know it's an external link? Not a big deal, though. Man oh man that Pinky theme is cute...!
Config.. wassamut files... *sweatdrop* You're smart, too smart. I am going to commend you in this extremely unique content but leave it at that since I don't know what to do with those exactly. Plus I use Windows Vista, so... XD I don't know what the big deal with Vista is, I have never had any problems. I don't know. :S
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
All in all I would say that you are a very smart coder and I admire that! I think maybe a few color tweaks would help out here and there, and just a little bit of establishing the structure in the design. I think I might, for once, actually go back through some of your writings and read through them. You may have made a reader out of me yet! *shock!*

I just wanted to say... I LOVE THE NEW LAYOUT x14840901478! It looks so awesome...! :oUsing Firefox on Windows | Report This?

Thanks for the very long review! That was fun to read, actually; I love the *sweatdrop* bit. :) I should try a light-colored them with the same kind of menu system as what I currently have in Round Black, because I definitely like that menu, too. That's two reviews now that have liked my avatars and wallpaper, and I'm glad because I worried no one liked or used that stuff!

Besides the color choice, the layout is pretty magnificent. I love the header and the brushes that are used. The color used for your footer is a bit random though. I would have gone for orange to tie it all together.
Your set up of the navigation is lovely. I think its great when people put their navigation links in crazy, unique spots. I am just going to look at your creative link. Thats the type of stuff that I am really interested in.
Oh good! You have a portfolio. I always enjoy looking at other peoples artwork. I like your layout for your portfolio better then the one for your main site. The green color is perfect and easy to read. Most of the time people choose a too bright green, or a green that just looks disgusting. Yours is perfect. Oh, it is not what I expected. I was thinking graphic or drawn art. Not a resume and web design. Moving on. I still love that layout, though!
I have been thinking about adding a written section to my site. Your is really inspiring. I love the idea of a dream journal. I always want to tell people about mine but never want to because of the embarrassment. Posting it online is a great way to get that out of my system. All of your written links are well done. I enjoyed skimming over them.
Onward. Your photo gallery is well organized. It made me want to look at the pictures and not run way because it was to messy. I love the set up of putting your favorites first and then letting the viewer choose the other albums they want to look at.
My final opinion of your site is great content, but the layout is not aesthetically pleasing to me. Your colors are a little to vivid for my eyes.

Thank you for the review! I've had trouble before designing layouts that look great on my Macbook but then the colors appear much differently on CRT monitors or other LCD monitors. I need to check that out.

on 11th Nov 2008 and said:I truly think this is one of your best layouts. It's very clean, simple, uncluttered, and classy. The pink in the footer goes perfectly with the orange/black/gray and your text has a nice amount of contrast with the background.
The date in the post title bar isn't quite as contrasty so it's kind of difficult to see, but it's not a huge issue. You could get away with brightening it a weensy bit and it'd still be pretty faded out.
I like the gradient on your site title and the top bar, but I think the gradient on the subnav items in the dropdown are a bit heavy-handed. They'd look a lot sharper if the opacity of the gradient was turned down a bit.
In your comments, how come the comment time is spaced out far away from the "Time: " label? It doesn't look bad exactly, but I find myself wondering why there's a big gap.
You have a TON of content and I like how you've styled the main pages and given a preview of what's inside. It helps the reader know what they're going to click on, which is rarely a bad thing.
The "Free WP Themes" page totally surprised me - I felt like I left your site and I had to quickly read around and make sure I was still somewhere affiliated with 3till7. I think if I were you, I would make that a page on your main site with thumbnail images that link out to your subdomain. You could put a short blurb about your subdomain to help the user understand that they'll be going somewhere else.
It wouldn't have been quite as jarring if the layouts were more similar, but they're very, very different and the experience evokes that same feeling of clicking through a series of nav items only to find that after six normal pages of content, the last item "contact" is actually a mailto: link and now Outlook is trying to open and its freezing your computer and ARGH. Okay, so not that annoying, but still. It doesn't follow your same nav convention.
In terms of the "Simple Color" layout, it's lovely as well. There's something about the main content area that irks me and I can't quite put my finger on it. I feel like either the font is a weensy bit large, or the line-length too long, or the line-height too small or SOMETHING. It might be the contrast, actually - I think the text is a bit dark and my eyes are being jiggly when I try to read it. Perhaps try a shade or two lighter and see how that looks? I think that might be it.
The chunky navigation just kills me though, I love that. That's perfect.
I think it'd be nice if, on that layout, the post titles were larger and chunkier, almost to match your nav. Right now they feel a bit small and thin. I think your search form in the sidebar could be perked up a bit too, perhaps with some color or a styled button.
Simple Color tells me you have one validation error, a closing div for one that isn't open. Round Black is fine error-wise, but you have a couple of warnings:
1. an anchor is re-using the word "sidebar" as its name, but you're already using div id="sidebar" and it says it's already defined.
2-4: for some reason, it doesn't like you starting your links with a slash and a question mark. I'm actually not sure why; I had no idea it wouldn't like that. I'm not sure what it would hurt to put your full URL in there, so you might try that.On both layouts, I feel like your "asides" could be padded out a bit more vertically. Not a lot, but they feel a little cramped.
Your about page is WONDERFUL. Seriously. Great. The "Quick and Dirty" gives a great overview of you and it's fun, not boring. Nice work here. I haven't actually looked at this page in a long time, so it was fun. :)
OMG the invisible-brake braking! That is SO ME. We don't have a car, but whenever we borrow or rent one, Daniel does the driving and good heavens I love him but he has this horrible habit of waiting to see how fast the car in front of him is slowing down before he hits the brakes. My argument is that they could be slamming them on to avoid an accident and he'd be judging the slow-down rate without braking and we'll hit them and die. He disagrees. Hence the invisible braking. /end tangent
I am also anti-interrupting. In my case it might be a first-child thing, where I didn't have to compete for attention for a while, but MAN does it annoy me.
Overall, your site is huge, very well-rounded, clean, organized, and interesting. There's not a lot of bad things I can say about it, and you've been a huge inspiration to me for years and years. I know we're not best internet buddies or anything but you were one of the first people to link to me ages ago and I'm forever appreciative. :) Viva 3till7!

on 10th Nov 2008 and said:Frankly, I love this design. I think it's fabulous: Simple, a focus on the content, but still gorgeous at the same time. The colours work fabulously together, and although i'm not a fan of white-on-black, there's something about this layout that just works. The Simple Colour theme is nice, but a little too light for my tastes, so I think i'll stick with the first theme.
Your blog entries are a great length, and provided some interesting reading. I'm glad that the entries aren't entirely about day-in-day-out activities, and more about your thoughts and ideas as well. It makes for a change, thats for sure. I quite like the snippets you have in your sidebar too, kind of informative and provides a means for quickly skimming through the site's activity. Woo.
I like that you have many pages for viewing pleasures. I'll try and go through as many as I can but considering you've got quite a few, we might be here a while!
About:
I love how you've designed the About Sarah page. The Quick and Dirty List is just GREAT, and is making me wonder why the hell I didn't think of it myself. It's succinct and works well. I like that you continue to provide more insights to yourself. Your signs-I-am-a-dork made me laugh. Overall, the page makes me feel like I know you a little better, which I suppose is the ultimate goal of an about page ... ;)Your other about pages are equally well laid out, and are very easy to read. Good work with these pages. :)
Creative:
Your Geeky page is really useful, I'm going to look forward going through each individual page. It's right up my alley, even though I barely understand what it's on about. It's also quite nice that you provide some scripts to the user as well. That being said, the Geeky Stuff page is very, very long, and might be more effective split up into specific categories.Your photo page is well set out and well categorised. The dream journal is quite clever, but again, very long. I think categorising would work well in your favour for this page, the opinions page, and your poetry page (which isn't too long yet, but I can see it becoming a problem in the future,) too. Alternatively, you could include a search script like you've done for your quotes page: this is very clever, and quite original. Nice.
Downloads
The wallpapers are lovely. I've borrowed the blue one to use, personally, because I think it's gorgeous. The avatars, too, are nice, but kind of generic. The free wordpress layouts too are lovely, and a nice touch to provide to the viewer. The links page is categorised well and is full of interesting sites, I'll enjoy visiting some of them.
Overall, a fantastic website. The amount of content you have is absolutely amazing, so I give you huge props for that. I have very little, if any, negative comments to say, and so I will leave you with my first real 5 star review. Great work.

moneypenny's Response:
Thank you for the lengthy review, and for pointing out particular parts of the site you enjoyed. I worry about splitting content up too much and falsely making it look like I have more than I do, which is why Geeky Stuff isn't broken up, along with the other longer sections. I think you have a point about Geeky Stuff, though, and I'm going to look at it and reconsider how I could organize it. I'm glad I'm your first 5-star review, too. :)

on 9th Nov 2008 and said:I've loved your layout since you put it up. The blurriness around the title reminds me of coming home after a long night. Overall that's the impression I get with this layout. Hazy streetlights. Or the singular lamp in my room that I turn on to read before I go to bed. I know your domain means 6:57, but with this layout it seems more like the time between 3am and 7am-- it's already tomorrow, but not quite tomorrow. :P
Anyway! Enough with my extended metaphors! Usually I dislike menus like the ones you are using. But I like these ones, because they are BIG. I don't have to aim for a tiny floating box! I also like the fact that I can just click the main heading and be brought to a static table of contents for the section. SO many people don't include that, and that irks me. I wish the headings for 'Comments,' 'Asides,' etc. were all the way to the left, like everything else. They just seem to come from nowhere, and I find that to be odd!
I LOVED your About Sarah page. Absolutely. The questions you asked yourself were original and interesting! So much better than the standard "I have ____ hair and ___ eyes." All of your other pages follow this structure, and provide interesting non-cliche glimpses into your personality!
On to Creative, I found your articles to all be very original and interesting. A lot of things you've covered, I haven't seen on other sites. I absolutely adore how you've set out your photos. I've been looking for a way to do my own, so thank you for the link to the plug in at the bottom! So much easier than me having to search for credits on the credits page! It's nice to have it all right there. The rest of your Creative content is exactly that... creative and original! I am impressed.
Your 'Less hostility, More hugs' icon is ADORABLE.
Your links page is well organized and nice. Although, just off the top of my head, I know that Rose hasn't been at impish.ca for quite a bit now.
Hmm... sorry for the lack of criticism in this review! Like I said, the heading thingies I think should be brought all the way left, so they look like they come from somewhere. Also, on your main Downloads page (i.e. if I just click it, not use the fancy menu), the footer doesn't stick to the bottom, and it would look much better if it did. :)
Keep up the amazing work!

on 7th Nov 2008 and said:Upon entering I find this gorgeous layout. All of the colors work very well together. It's really a site I just like to look at for hours on end. So for the layout, you did an extremely good job.
The rounded corners work well with it also.
I scrolled down to your footer and it seems kind of cramped. Maybe you could change all of the RSS links to something like this?:
"RSS: Blog - Photo - Update - Comment"I am really liking these navigation links!
I've read the things about you and I must say, you give alot of information for the visitor to know what kind of person you are, without boring the visitor.
I find lots of coolies things in the "Creative" section. I've read some of it, it's very well written and kept me wanted to read more.
I just visited your downloads section and I claimed one of your wonderful wallpapers. :)
The avatars are really cute to! I especialy like the orchid ones.
Now I'm not exactly in love with the free-wp layout, but I definitly AM in love with the themes it contains :)
And lastly on the Links page, I was amusing myself so much with clicking them all that I almost forgot about this review :P
Your site is very good and I enjoyed viewing it.

Thank you. :) I'm glad you like the layout. I love the colors in it, but I've worried it's too simple. I'm glad that you viewed it in MSIE and didn't have any problems. I was thinking the main navigation looked wonky, but maybe it was in only a few versions of IE.
