on 7th Mar 2009 and said:Hiya Kris, it’s me again! I’m glad you valued my first review enough to want another from me! Again, if you feel my review could be improved in any way, please let me know.
First Impressions:
Aesthetics:
Wow, I love the contrast in this design, particularly between the golden-orange and the pale blue you’ve chosen, but I’m not terribly fond of that precise shade of the dark blue for some reason. Perhaps it’s not so much the color as it is its lack of contrast with the rest of the layout. I think maybe some type of pattern (maybe even with a dash of that gold) would do nicely to further distinguish the dark blue from the pale blue. Yeah, I think what puts me off about it is the lack of texture there. It looks like the dark blue might have been inspired by the black cat’s fur and its sheen in the light, so it seems only natural that there should be some texture to the dark blue as well to reflect that connection.
I think adding more texture would serve to frame the central content more efficiently. Otherwise, once you scroll far enough down past the header and navigation, the layout begins to look bland, although the golden backgrounds in the “title†class div do help to add a considerable amount of visual interest. I tilted my screen back far enough to try and imagine black in place of the dark blue, and if you should opt not to layer a pattern or texture over the dark blue, the color black might be another interesting alternative as well. It contrasts with the pale blue much better than the dark blue does, and serves to highlight the “title†div backgrounds. The dark blue alone really leaves me feeling like there are either one too many solid colors or shades of blue.
Essentially, your header really makes this layout sparkle, although I don’t think it’s perfect. I would recommend that you be consistent with the texture you use for the navigation and have it expand across the whole bar, or at least have it fade out the way it does near the site title. The hover effect works nicely as is, though. Lastly, I think the texture near the site title could expand and fade out just a little bit more, because just to the left and below of the “Mithmeoi†logo and to the left tip of the cat’s right ear, the gradient isn’t very smooth. It ends a little abruptly, rather than fading into the deeper golden-orange at the ends.Text:
Although it is technically a proper sentence, it looks a little odd to me to not treat “Welcome to my personal site!†as a title and capitalize it as “Welcome to My Personal Site!†I don’t know why, that just looks more presentable to me since it is in fact a heading. I am also curious as to why you have made this particular heading an h2 rather than an h1 (which seems to be out of use), which brings me to the “title†class div. Those look like headers to me, and yet they’re in a div rather than say an h3.
I am having mixed feelings towards the lack of borders on the opposite sides of the div too. I think I like it with the side borders more actually. I think unclosed it looks incomplete in a way, although I can understand why you might not want to box the pattern in completely. As a suggestion, I quite like the look of making the bottom and right border a pixel thicker. It gives the slight illusion that the “title†div is raised off of the page, adding dimension in the same way the pattern does.
One last note I wanted to make about the “title†class div is that links are not apparent, which could be a problem for someone who isn’t going to assume that the post title is clickable. That’s tough though, because I have no idea how you could make that clickable without having it clash with the beautiful background.
With all this attention to the “title†class div, I do find the stark differences between them and the h2 to be a little startling. I think it has to do with the fact that the color of the h2 stems from the background image (spacer.gif) of the “title†class div, and that has the effect of visually placing the h2 lower in the hierarchy for me because it is a background color. Even though the font is bigger, my eyes remain drawn to the “title†div first. Maybe using a darker color or more decoration would bring the h2 forward.Blog:
Viewing the blog from the front page rather than the post page, I see some superfluous information. Unless you intend to share your blog with someone else at another point, the author information is totally unnecessary, except where you might apply it like a signature, which isn’t the case here.
I also see you have the comment count on the same line with the category and tags. In the rare event that you have more tags than can fit on a single line, the comment count will start to look really odd split across two lines or in the middle of one post page where it is at the very end of another. For the sake of consistency and neatness, I would suggest you put the comment count on another line.
I could also see the comment count being moved up where the date is, and floated to the right (with the date remaining on the left), and the same thing right below it with the category on the left, and the tags on the right. It seems more useful to have at least the category and tag information before the post since it gives meta data and tells us what the post is about. Placing that information after the post kind of defeats half the purpose of the category and tag functions as after reading the post, we already know what the tags are or at the very least we have idea of what they should be. Meta data is much like a synopsis or summary. We should have that kind of information beforehand.
Another thing I find odd and unattractive is the placement of the “Older Posts†and the “Newer Posts†at the bottom of the page. It’s way too close to the bottom border of the category, tags, and comment counts and the footer of the layout. It would be nice to give it some breathing room, and perhaps to make it stand out more. I almost missed it on account of its location and size. I see this issue has also been replicated on the post pages with the previous and next post titles at the bottom, except the border below the category and tags has a higher line height for some reason. Check that out.
Continuing on the post page, I see that you have been inconsistent about the meta data at the top and changed the styling and the formatting. Again, I recommend you stay consistent. Either you stick to the full date with the day of the week and the same “date†class div as you do on the home page, or you leave it to the plain style as you’ve done on the post page. This reminds me, you may want to consider implementing an archival page for your site, as clicking to older posts one by one can be a little tedious down the line when your post numbers have started to rack up. Of course, I don’t know how important it is to you that old posts be very accessible, but it is something you should take into consideration.
Down at the bottom, I think the comment section could use a bit of sprucing up as it’s a bit plain, especially the form. I don’t think it would hurt to give the “Leave a comment†submit button a background image, perhaps even the same one as you use in the “title†class div. The actual comments are plain too. Perhaps boxing them up somehow with the pattern would do nicely. Like, maybe you could put the comment number, commenter’s name and posting date in a div with the same background as the “title†class div, and then have the remaining information, i.e. the Gravatar floated to the left of the comment, in a box with a border. That might be overusing the pattern a little, but I just like it so much. I would experiment with these kinds of things to help the site have a more cohesive feel.About:
I really like the Polaroid inspired border around the images on this page, and the captions. It’s a really nice effect, but it gets a little drowned out with the blue though since the background of the layout is already blue. Try to remember to have a more varied palette!
The information is simple and concise without getting too personal. There was just one minor typo (my edits are in brackets), in the first sentence where you’ve written “since that is usually [a] good place to start.â€
The other pages at the bottom of the section show one of the weaknesses of a single column layout, that navigation is often separated. It might be in your best interest to consider implementing hierarchical navigation up at the top, that is, when you click on a page to a section, other areas in that section become visible below the main navigation. Vera’s site, Lianko.com, has an example of what I’m talking about. Of course, there are many ways to do it, and hers is just one of many.>About the Site:
Straight to the point! No complaints here, although there is a typo where you’ve written “[Being] as at the time I was very addicted to LOTR...†although I’m not sure that’s even proper word choice. If I had anything to add to this page, it might be previous versions of the site, but I understand you might not keep records of that since that type of content may prove too common. Still, since you’re an artist, it is of some interest.>My Beliefs:
Here the discrepancy between the h2 and “title†class div is most obvious, perhaps due in part to the fact that you’ve repeated “My Beliefs†twice. It has the feeling of making the h2 seem a little superfluous, but it is definitely useful on other pages, so I don’t know what to do about it. I’m also noticing the unsightly amount of space at the bottom of the page, which is no doubt a result of code that is irrelevant on WordPress pages. It’s a little sloppy, and it’s relatively simple to get rid of. It looks like you already have a page.php template, so all you need to do is get rid of the extra nbsp entity references and the code for category output. Otherwise, I have no suggestions for this page!>My Pets:
I used to have a cat named Oliver, except he was orange. He kind of matched your layout. I miss him. ;_; Anyway, I think it would be nice (and consistent) if you incorporated the “wp-caption†class div on this page for your images. It’s a great way, combined with the pictures, to give the reader a short summary of the paragraphs about your pets. I think I like the fact that you have all the text aligned at the same point, but it might look neater if the images on the left were centered in their cells.>Other Stuff:
I was half expecting a list of hundreds of random (sometimes repeated) facts. It’s pretty nice not to have to sift through all that. Everything is short and sweet. I could learn something from you.>Guestbook:
Well Tony sure is a presumptuous guy, isn’t he?! This page could certainly use some sprucing up. I find it curious that this is the only page in this series that doesn’t include the “title†class div. It feels so naked without it! Some more color on this page would help make this page a bit more presentable.Works:
It’d be kind of silly to attempt to review every piece in your galleries, so I’m going to make a few general comments having taken an extensive look at your work. First, concerning the actual presentation of the work, I think it would look neater if you centered the body of thumbnails on the pages. Other than that, as I’ve said before, you’re talented, and I hope you keep this up! I wish I could get my act together and have as extensive and impressive a gallery as you do. I just keep finding excuses not to put pencil to paper. Anyway, great job!Tutorials:
I like that you chose to make these all images rather than pages because it makes the tutorials a little easier to follow. Of course, that leaves them in a static state, and if you should ever have to update them, that will prove problematic. Still, as you have briefly addressed, it could be helpful to leave these old tutorials as they are, because your older techniques could be more useful to one individual, and your newer ones likewise for another. I hope you will continue to add to this!Contact:
See, this is the kind of form I was talking about when I was critiquing your commenting area in your blogs. Just a few gradients go a long way. I would consider adding something of this nature to the other commenting forms across the site. It’s tough work, but the final results are always worth the effort.Links:
This page is well organized and concise, and thus, consistent with the rest of the website.Final Thoughts:
Well Kris, your site is clean, concise, and to the point! Your site is wonderful, and with a few small aesthetic touches here and there, I’m sure the site will surely sparkle amongst the crowd. I’m sure with your obvious skill in the arts, you will accomplish that soon enough. I hope my review has been helpful, and if you have any questions or comments, please do share! Thanks again for your request.Using Firefox on Windows | Report This?

-site still loading- Aha! Loaded.
First impression
Personally, I'm not too keen on the layout. Sure, I love cats, I'm getting a kitten myself (as soon as I can find one) but there's just something about it that's putting me off. I think it may be the colour scheme. Don't get me wrong, I think blue and yellow look fab together. I think it's the shade of blue. It just doesn't match. And the font, (This isn't critisism) I just don't like it :P Don't take this to heart and it won't effect your rating, I promise :)
-is that your cat? It's adorable :)-
I like your heading background for the "Most recent art" bit. Although I feel the swirls don't fit in with the layout much. Maybe the scratched effect behind the layout would be better for the heading background?coding
Your site is valid to XHTML 1.0 transitional so that's all good and css, once I finally tracked it down via your page source, four errors. You can see them here. I don't actually use "label" in my css but it looks simple enough to correct. No really bad errors here so it's okay so far :)Pages
about: This page would be better named "owner" or "webmistress". "about" could mean anything. I personally thought it'd be the page about the site. (edit: sorry, just seen the site link at the bottom. These'd be better at the top, however. I didn't notice them before /edit)
Wow. I like your photographs on this page and the way they look like polaroids. This page is about you. There should be more about YOU, not just your artist history. Other than the first paragraph, and the last two, it's all about your art. People come here to hear about YOU and I can see that art is a huge part of you, but I think four paragraphs is a bit TOO much, y ' know?
About the site
(Just let me point out here; I don't like your link hovers. The yellow font on the blue doesn't look attractive at all)
My beliefs
Well, not being a part of any religion myself, I feel it'd be better if I didn't review on this page.
Pets
Aw, those pets are pretty darn cute. I'd love a dog, but I'm not allowed. So I'm kitten-waiting instead :(
I can't really comment on this page - You know your pets, not me.
Other stuff
This page is pretty pointless. Although, I'm pretty impressed about the mountain hike (y). Also, I've been to Holland - It's amazing, don't you think?
Works
Oh my, there's going to be a lot of pages isn't there? I'm going to review each section as a whole, unless I see anything I feel I need to comment on individually.
Animations
I don't know if it's my connection but these are taking forever to load. Amazing animations though. I Really Really love them.
Artwork
...Wow. That's incredible. You really are a talented artist. My favorite would have to be the tiger that's the third one in on semi-realism but I love them all!
Photography
I love photography so lets see how you shape up eh? :P
You shape up well I see :)
My favorites would have to be the nature ones. They are pretty dang nice :) Inparticular the sunset one (the seventh one) and the mountains (the nineteenth one).
writings
I'm really sorry, but I don't have the time to go through all of your stories. I will, however read one of your poems. I really do apologise but I've been doing this for about half an hour and I really need to go to bed. It's getting late :P
The Hobbit who wanted everything
lol. That made me laugh out loud :P You're a talented writer :)
Commissions
Woah. Maybe I'm not familiar with selling art online but, it seems a little pricey. $110-$130 for a digital animal, really. Do people pay that kind of money?
Tutorials
This is a pretty nifty idea. I've never seen how-to-draw tutorials online before. I like them.. a lot :)Overall
Overall, I don't like your design. I'm not going to lie. But I am seriously impressed by your content, and it is this that has won you four stars. I really do love your content, but I think your next layout should be hand drawn. Because, quite frankly (who is think Frank? :P) I think your drawing skills are better than your graphics.
And for future reference; Don't use this colour scheme again :)Using Firefox on Windows | Report This?
Greykitty's Response:
LOL Thanks for the review, your small comments here and there made me chuckle. I'm sorry the site loads so slowly for you. I begin to think it's bug in Firefox because it loads fast in IE, Safari and Google Chrome, not sure what to do about that. >>
Well it's funny that so many people say use my art and before they told me to drop it cause it made my site look too kiddy. LOL Ah well. I always have a bad time coming up with good color combos but I will stay away from the complimentary colors from now I think. XD
Oh and to answer you yes people do pay those prices, I'm actually one of the cheaper certified artists out there. Companies will pay anywhere from $200-$500 for just concept art. :P

First Impressions
Oh. A cat. Sorry, ha, I hate cats, mainly because I'm terribly allergic to them. Your site looks pretty promising, though. The "Most Recent Art" section looks really good right now, I can't wait to see everything! Your site is compatible in Firefox, which is good, the loading time was great, which is also great. Your coding is valid, but your CSS has 114 errors, hm.Layout
I'm not a big fan of this layout, sorry. I usually don't like layouts with complementary colours, and the pastel orange and the blue don't really looks good together. I agree with Liz, you should use your artwork in your layout! Judging your Most Recent Art section here, you look really talented and can easily put one of your pieces into a nice layout. Hey, I just realized that the black cat looks like Salem from Sabrina the Teenage Witch, haha!
On a positive note, your navigation is quite large and therefore easy to find!Content
About Cute pic. I like how you've added the border to it.
I don't live in the states, but shouldn't Softmore be Sophomore? We don't use that term up here in Canada, so I'm not quite sure if that's right.
"So Mith = Grey and Mëoi = Cat" That's cool. :)
Ha! Your dog's name is Nikki! That's hilarious, and adorable.
Well, I'm glad that you've added a bunch of information about yourself, I always like sites who have a lot, because it shows that they are willing to take time out of their lives to write about themselves!Works So, I'm confused. You don't need to have the "subpages" section there if you have the links with pictures right above it. Pointless!
Wow, your animations are amazing. I love the "Cat Got Your Tongue?" one. So cute! Those Flash animations are really good, too. I wish I could do flash! I'm learning.
WOW. You have a LOT of artwork. Okay, I'll try to go through it all!:)
Oh my god. You are so talented. I love the "Scream If Ya Like It" one. So good! I'm really jealous. Your cartoons are so good! Ah! The unicorn puking rainbows is hilarious.
Nice photography. Really good, especially the ones of your cats. You are really talented.
Wow, your writings are really good, too. You're like a triple threat, man! Geesh! Ha :)Tutorials Oh my god. This is the first time I've ever seen a site offer these! I was expecting tutorials that everyone has, like HTML and making layouts and stuff, but not you! I love it. Extra points for originality. Good job explaining the steps and relating them to shapes so they can be drawn easier! Great work.
I'm going to skip the Contact page, because there's not really anything to review on it!
Links Good job with this page. You've kept it very organized, which is great. I like how you've listed the sites that you like, and how you've used the buttons for the ones you are affiliates with. Nice buttons of yours, by the way. Good job ranging in sizes.
Conclusion
Overall, I thought your site was very well done. You have tons of art to show, which is fantastic. You are very talented! Only fix minor errors and you should be perfect! Great job, and good luck in the future!Using Firefox on Mac | Report This?

That CSS error is not my coding, it must be in my image display script or something, which is a plug in. :/ I've run both my css and html coding through the validator and they come up clean.

on 25th Feb 2009 and said:My first impression upon viewing your site was, "oh wow a kitty!". I love cats so of course I am going to be biased in saying that I really like your main header image. It was the first thing I was drawn to. I am not too keen on the colour scheme of the site. I do like the orange, but I feel there is too much blue.
I like that you have implemented a different style to the active navigation link. I think your navigation text could be padded out lower so that it appears in the centre of the menu.
I like the pattern you have used in your headers. I am not too sure about the top and bottom borders, though. They do not look right to me. It could be because the blue background is visible in between the pattern and border. This ought to be corrected.
I feel the text for your blog dates and comment meta should be bigger. The blockquotes look fine.
You have a decent amount of content which is great. I enjoyed looking through your artwork, you are very talented. I also liked looking through your drawing tutorials. I can see them being a great help to those who want to develop their drawing skills. Nice job on them!
The background used for your comment form ought to be a touch lighter or so. Having a dark border around your form elements would give the form that extra "umph", giving it a more professional look. Your guestbook form would be nice like this too. Keeping your forms the same style will make your website design look more consistent.
I am delighted to see that your website is HTML valid. I have took a peek at your coding and it all seems fine.
I did like looking through your website. I love that you have your pets incorporated into the design, it makes the site more unique to you. It also tells me you love them dearly. You're a talented artist and with a few changes your site will be great. I am happy to give you 4 stars. Keep up the good work!

I loved your portfolio, so I knew what you're capable of from that time. This is no exception. I never understood what your site name meant, but that's beyond the point. Very rarely do people put blue and orange together properly the way that you did. I love it. And...cats! I have a soft spot for cats.
The only issue is that your footer info doesn't fit all the way. Like the "Back to the top" link flows to another line. Probably shorten it to..."top" with an arrow going up.
Blog
The size of the font is great with just the right padding and line height. And the light blue (?) text goes very well with the darker blue. And did I mention that I love the background for your entry titles? No? I do though.
While I would normally say something about having a footer bar of sorts, because that's where the welcome and recent art stuff can fit comfortably at, but it works here, and I'm not sure how you'd work it in the other way.
The other pages
About: North Dakota has big mosquitoes? Oh, sorry. But yeah, I thought that your bio was well-written with paragraphs. Not only well-written, but also interesting. When I do look at your stuff, it definitely yells early-Disney.
Ohh...so that's what your site name means. Makes sense now. Wicked! Site info, informative as well.
And I wanted to applaud this line on your Beliefs page:
I dislike when someone starts waving their religion/beliefs in my face having total disregard for what I believe in; therefore I respect others’ beliefs just as I would like to have mine respected. Let’s face it, if someone comes up to you and starts telling you you are going to burn in hell and you need to repent now would you really want to listen to them?
Thank you! I've been trying to tell people this! *Ahem* Moving along...
And I seriously want to squish your cats. Okay, not squish them to the point of death, but they're adorable!
Works: Like I said, I will always love "Cat Got Your Tongue?" You have a few broken links here though, namely in your Flash Animation area. And I will always love your artwork. OMG, the fourth picture in your blends section...too cute. I want a hug! But is it just me, or is the third and fourth blend the same one?
Tutorials: Ooh, drawing tutorials! I've never seen that on any other site before. Excellent! I'm going to try some (and see how my cat looks deranged because other than doodling, I'm not good at drawing at all! ROFL).
Links: Very rare do I point out a site's links page, but I think that the buttons of varying sizes disrupt the flow of the page. Instead of having buttons, maybe just text links?
Coding
It's valid coding. There's nothing out of the ordinary. I noticed that some of your links have the site address of where we came from. That's interesting.
All in all...
Once again, you didn't disappoint. This is a beautifully put-together site, complete with cats and the great use of orange and blue. Question: Does this mean that your other site is closed since you have your portfolio stuff on this one now? But yeah, that's pretty much it. Great job!

The layout is very cute! Everything is readable and neat. I don't think you've quite pulled off the color scheme though. The yellow seems to look out of place. I wish the footer had a bit more padding and that the font was bigger. The cat is cute but since you seem to be an artist work some gorgeous art into your layout! I like the "most recent art".About- Your about is well written and goes into depth just enough. I do wish I could see the subpages without having to scroll down.
Beliefs- Of course well written and a good explanation. As a fellow Christian I applaud you for having this on your site.

hmmm I just made the layout so I don't want to ditch it. =/
I have used some of my art before but most people tell me the site comes off as looking like a Disney fan site or a young teens blog when I use my cartoon works and most of my realism I get tired of looking at fast. lol I'm really stuck on what to do for layouts these days so I decided to try and use some of my photography. Maybe if I change out the yellow? I dunno. Thanks for the review though, I'm glad you liked most of what you saw. =D
