Portfolio of my recent web work. It is only 90% done... a couple areas need to be finished but the majority of the functionality and design is done.

Thanks for the reviews. =)

Before I can proceed with my review, I'd like to know exactly how you were involved in making the sites that are in your portfolio. Because identical screenshots can be found here, and this person claims to have created those sites (more or less) on her own. Or so I understood.

    UPDATED 12 Apr 09:
    Here's the actual review :)

    Visual (2,5/5)
The main content box and right-side navigation are clean and professional. Though about me, resume and contact could always have the blue color so that people notice them and know they're links. The active state could then have another effect or color - yellow, red... What's with the pictures of those people? It looks like they group with the navigation. They should be closer to the big screenshot, and perhaps have the same background.

IMO, typography is the first thing you should improve. Body text should be left-aligned (if not always, at least most of the time). Font is too small, paragraph margin is too big and line height difference between static content boxes and other content is too big. I first ignored the boxes above the numbers, because they look like Google ads. I don't think the handwriting font goes with the rest of the type.

In resume, the paragraph under Independent Contract for Hire runs off the edge. Is it supposed to be above Download my Resume...?

    Content (4/5)
It's over 600 Kb and took 30 seconds to load. Could be a lot less.

The screenshots look great. But there is hardly any information about them. Potential customers probably want to know what exactly it is you can do. You probably know better how these things work, but I feel the information you give throughout the site isn't specific enough to make anyone want to consider hiring you.

    Coding (0/5)
One or two slip-ups I can understand, but for a web designer to have "175 Errors and 99 warning(s)"?

Jic and I worked hand and hand together on those sites at our old office which was recently shut down. I was the Production Director and had my hand in ever aspect of the development. Jic helped out in any areas she could - mainly with the design and css. =)

    Jic is the bomb =)

Layout/design: Very clean and I love your color scheme. My only complaints for the overall design and layout of certain elements are as follow:

You should make the 'about me' bold like you did with your resume and contact links. At first, I figured it was just there as text/graphic as the words next to it, describing you. Makes sense, but if I were a potential client or just a plain visitor, I would never have thought to click it and then your about me page would be for nothing, as I would never have gotten the chance to read it.

The three sections you have explaining what you do and so on, do not look right with the text aligned in different directions. I think you should stay consistent and stick to one alignment, left, center, or right. Preferably, left would be the best option. The text in the middle section, overlaps the background design, I would see to it that this is fixed!

I'm not to fond of the black suitcase graphic and title where it currently is located. Of course, that is all but personal preference, but to me, I feel like you just put it there to put it there. In my opinion, every aspect and element in a design should have reason and purpose for being where it is and right now, it seems that has no purpose there, so it becomes useless. Why not add it to the header and possibly link to it back to the main index?

Again, if I were a potential client/plain visitor, I would have never guessed the large 1,2,3 boxes at the bottom were actually your work. I would probably have thought nothing of it and wondered where the hell your work was. See where I'm going with this? Your job as a designer (especially since this is your portfolio and you are offering services) is to help guide the potential client as best you can. Remember not everyone is internet/website savvy, that is where your skills come in the most! I think the best way to fix this would be to either add images (screenshots or thumbnails) of your work, or place above the numbered boxes a header that clearly states that is your work.

Coding: Looking at your source, I can see you are using jQuery. While it is a step up from using Flash, I hope you aren't too worried about SEO? Your website is made up of just one large text file (in terms of text, that is) with no pages and the pages that might matter, are "hidden". Something Google cannot read. If you turn off Javascripting in your browser you will see what Google sees. Now, if you aren't worried about SEO, then I suppose you have nothing to worry about.

Other then that, while your source file looks a tab messy, the code itself is correct and 'clean'.

    Content/Pages:

Main: Under the 'Get an Estimate' section, if you do not have the questionnaire ready, I would suggest not adding a link there. Why not simply redirect them to your contact form instead?

About Me: I think that the paragraph below:

This picture was taken at a family event, I had appointed myself the job of "child entertainer." Don't worry, I won't wear the mask to work. I try to have fun, be an inspiring person, and take life with an open mind.

    should begin with the line

Don't worry, I won't wear the mask to work.

and add the current first line as a tag to the image instead. To me, it would flow better that way and pull the reader in. Just feel the first line is extremely irrelevant.

Resume: Clean and to the point. I think you should also add a .DOC version of your resume, you never know! ;)

Contact: While I can see your sense of humor, I think others might not appreciate it as much...or at least not too much. The puppies, might be over doing it here on the form. Again personal preference!

Overall: You have a lot of good qualities and your work is fantastic, if I weren't a designer myself and needed services I would be very interested in your work. Remember, not everyone who sees your website will automatically know what to do, as the designer, YOU need to help educate that potential client or visitor and guide them through what YOU want them to see on your website! Good luck!

No problem, I'm glad you could find it useful. =)

My baby? As in my website? Oh no! This piece of work belongs to Jem. She's the master mind behind this. ;)

Yay, I think i’m first xD they there uhh Trevor I think, I’m just looking at the site tab up top, if I’m wrong, please correct me. So the site, ah its pretty neat, the design its NICE. Not great but nice. Now the front of the design kind of looks like it’s coming out from the back, but since the colors are so similar, they match I mean, they look bad in a way, if the background had been all black or a darker shade of gray, I bed it’d appear a lot better not only in contract but also the visual effect would seem so dramatic than it does now. It’s pale-ish and man I’m so sick of portfolios that all COME IN WHITE!? Come on change it up a bit you guys. It’s boring the heck out of me! Moving on, I like your latest project image, even though it takes a little extra to find those words up top, I can see them, still bad at contract… I like the flash part of the design, the hover effects and image blocks. Very neat. But then again, most flash portfolio sites have this. uhh your about me page …isn’t open yet. Maybe you should wait to finish your site completely or 80% at least and then post it up for reviews. You’re not going to get much help if you only have 50% of the site up you know. Resumes empty. On contact, don’t link your email like that, have a pop-up window but have your emailed typed out and be able to HIGHLIGHT AND COPY IT to hotmail or yahoo address bars. That way you save people from having to look at your email or use some strange form of emailing system because they don’t have it or use it. Lesson: DON’T HIDE YOUR EMAIL BEHIND THE CONTACT. Alright next I see the web development and more text. The blue is a very pretty shade you used. I also want to comment on your fonts and sizes. You used a good range of different great fonts with good sizes, but when it comes to your regular paragraph or regular font, its way smaller than I’d expect it to be. It’s also kind of blending into the white background so more difficult to visualize..Why are you making my eyes hurt? Page 1 was nice, 2 is similar but just a different image. Uhh alright when I click your main images on the different pages, they don’t load or show up, it just freezes my screen and I’m like…what is going on? I’m going to say don’t take this review at all into consideration, just read this little opinion of mine and toss it out. But take this from it: finish your site before you post it up for reviews, it’s for the better, thank you though, it’s a very nice portfolio just not complete so it has an odd feeling to it.

All the other comments are going to be addressed as I find time to finish. Donka.

Hello! I will be reviewing your website in Firefox with a resolution of 1440x900

First Impression: I like the overall feeling of your site, and I am immediately drawn to the numbers at the bottom due to the fact I don't know what they are for, so I want to find out immediately. I think the numbers are a unique way to show your previous works

Site Front: Again, I think your site has a great feel. It looks professional but it also has that funky/fresh look that will make viewers interested when they first visit. I think the way you display your previous works is very nice and original in my opinion. I haven't seen it done like this before. 'Web Development' and 'Creative Marketing Solutions' are running out of the bottom of the text outlined area on my resolution.

Previous Works: It seems as if the first site is not displaying properly when I click it. I only see a beige gradient, not the site. I'm also unsure if it is just my internet or the way you are allowing viewers to preview your other works, but it is quite slow to load. Also, the 3rd layout no longer matches the screen shot exactly. That is kind of nit-picky but I just didn't know if you knew. Site 4 refused to load, again this could be my crappy school internet. I'm unsure. Site 6 is not linked as of yet I don't think, Site 7 just loaded a blank white page. I don't know if this is you or me, but if it's you thought I would just point it out!!

Content: You said your site is only 90% complete so I shall wait patiently for the 'About Me', 'Resume' and 'Contact' sections. I like how you have the 'About Me' link placed, but the rest of the words kind of look like they should be linked as well, the about me was hard to spot at first until I accidentally rolled over it because it blended so well. I don't know if that was done purposely or not.

Overall I really like your site and I am excited to see the rest when you are all finished! I only give you a 3.5 because it is unfinished and I feel there isn't enough to review as of yet. Let me know when you get everything finished and I would be more than happy to re-review your site and change accordingly!!
