on 16th Jul 2009 and said:My first impressions of your site are okay.
I like the old feeling of the image of the header, it's like something my grandmother would knit. The white text doesn't do it any harm either so well done. The orange header text though in your content area doesn't seem to work. It doesn't complement any of the colours though your site. My suggestion would be a green/maroon colour.
With your navigation, it's a bit off putting. I have no issue with the way it looks, just what you've named things. Such as "Stuff". What is "Stuff"? 'cause that can be anything. You need to be more specific if not, it just isn't appealing to click which is want you want presumable. Clicking it I see you offer graphics and an article. Because it's a hybrid of two things, try calling it visitor instead.
Also you called it content. It's ALL content. you really need to rename that header or just remove it all.
Help choosing a site name: I didn't really like this rticle because it's some random words which you picked out which are really common within cite names these days. Instead of offering a list of words, you could offer how to pick a site name they'll lose and list the pros and cons of each. That would of been a more insightful article. What you've done isn't an article now I think about it. just a list of words.
I have no problem with any other content on this page as it's reasonable. Try having a back button on the bottom/top of each one of these pages, because I am having to click "STUFF" again of back to get back to the main page. I don't like clicking back on the browser because what if I want to look at something I saw a few ages back put can't remember the page? I would have to go searching because the back button history would of been overwritten, And clicking stuff each time is irritable because I have to scroll up to the top of the page each time. So placing a back button at the bottom of each one of your articles would be really helpful.
I have no issues with your tutorials, but if it's something which you want to be known for, try adding more to the section. I like the idea of video tutorials. That's really cool.
With "Fresh". I am not gonna lie, it sounds stupid. I understand that most likely, after clicking it that it means REFRESH but ti still sounds dumb. An alternative would be "Home" or "Blog" seen as that is where it leads. Because if you refresh something, you basically reload the page. This button does not do this, so I can't understand why you called it that.
Clicking on Portfolio I am redirected to another page. What the hell? No warning no nothing. Plus when I clicked it the site it redirects me to is closed. It doesn't make very good impressions to have unfinished products on your site. I suggest removing this from your navigation and placing it within possible a "Network" section within your side bar / footer so people have some indication it will redirect them.
I was quite shocked to find no About me section within the navigation but within your sidebar but that's down to personal preference. reading your about me page, I think you desperatly need some padding on your picture because the text kinda starts from your picture making it seem amateurish. I also suggest breaking it down into smaller paragraphs.
At this point I realised in your WWW. section which I presumed was information about your site had information about yourself too. I was quite shocked but can understand the logic behind it. :]
If you are going to place both information about your site and information about yourself within the same section of your site, then I suggestion spltting them up within the page. Right now you have no organisation of the links to certain areas:
About Francine
Pictures of Me
About Color Me Silly
Link Me
Terms of Use
Contact Me
Presents<3I believe it would be better if you had the following:
OWNER
About Francine.
Pictures.
Contact me.WEBSITE
About Color me silly.
Link me.
Terms of use.OTHER
PresentsI think that would be better.
I have no problem with your tweet tweet on the sidebar,
or your affiliates. Consider having your affiliates above your tweets though. Possible.Information if okay. I think it would be better suited with the about color me silly page though and not on the side bar.
I've said this for a few sites. "Looks best in Firefox". Nobody cares. There must be about 5% of the population who would actually change their browser so they can view your site. Others would be pot luck whether they are already using firefox or not. With myself I tend to switch between five browsers. and it's your luck that I am using it. Remove it and just try your best to make your site compatible with all (or atleast the top 5 browsers ). - By top 5 I mean Firefox, I.E. (I know it sucks but still), Opera, Safari and Google Chrome.
Moving to your footer, I see that you have credits there and a copyright sign which I have no problem with. What I have a problem with is that you display "VALID XHTML & CSS" Neither are valid. If it isn't valid, do not display this because people including me will check if you display it. Your coding has 70errors and 6 warnings. And the link you provided at the bottom was for "http://colormesilly.org/sitely.php" And when I enter your site name it tells me you have 68 errors and 5 warnings
Your css has one warning, so it should be easy to correct it. There are tutorials everywhere for correcting your coding/css. I don't normally pick at coding but seen as you display it's valid, I'm gonna check.
Overall, even though I believe your site has a distinct layout and style, it still needs a not of work. It's hard to get originality these days seen as everyone seems to have a site and do the same things, so it's not your fault necessarily. Just try and find something you think not a lot of people do and do it.
Please consider the pointers I have given your throughout this review and best of luck with your site. :]
Have a nice day
- SholaUPDATED 16 Jul 09:
You placed 'content' here:
http://colormesilly.org/content.phpContent isn't just that. It's everything in your site. From and including your header to and including your footer. Everything in your site is content. That's what I meant.
I understand about the navigation names. being unique is a hard thing to do these days.

omg_francine's Response:
As I always say, thanks for the review! With the navigation names, I just wanted to be unique and creative with it, but if it bothers people, maybe I'll just change it to the normal thing.
What do you mean by removing my "content" header? I think it is fine there. :) Articles and Graphics are content, so yeah. P:
You are redirected to another page, because I don't want my portfolio to be on Color Me Silly. The reason of that is maybe I want to use my portfolio for something else not related at all to CMS? But maybe a warning would be good.
I don't expect anyone to switch their browser just for my site (as I wouldn't for anyone else xD). I say that, because a lot of people use IE, and they might see that my site looks like crap. Well, if they read the sidebar, it clearly states "looks best in FF", so that's why it looks crappy. That's why I put it there. :)
Thanks again!

Style & Design
First off, your layout - as the previous reviewer mentioned - loads very slowly. I am confused on why you would host your images off-site versus on-site. I understand if you have limited bandwidth, but here is a tip: crop your header image to fit to the exact pixel dimensions you need. Your header background is 1000x886, when very little of it shows. You need to crop it down to scale so that it doesn't take long to load. It will definitely improve the loading time. You could really use a background pattern or gradient...I'm not feeling the gray. Maybe a peachy pink to match? Experiment. :)
The box around your FanUpdate updates is annoyingly dark...is it black? I would recommend getting rid of it all together to improve the balance and flow. The other thing that bugs me with your updates is that they are CENTERED. Never ever ever center large amount of text. It's not natural for people to read in any language. So text-align: left; is your friend!
Content
Your content is pretty average. I give you a lot of credit for being so young and building a website and tutorials. Kids these days are starting out younger and younger. You need some unique content to your own personal style. Look around at other blogs and you'll get some ideas. I need to work on my own content at my blog, so I can't really give you any suggestions off the top of my head at the moment. Haha. Maybe a name analysis?
Coding
When I check your CSS via the validator link, it says it's valid. So yay. Your HTML is another story. You have over 60 errors according to the validator. So definitely not HTML Transitional. You really need to read up on W3C School's tutorials. They will help you a lot. They helped me, so I think they will help you too! :) You definitely need an external stylesheet, though, seeing as your CSS is all in your header.
Conclusion
Your site is a little boring, but overall decent. You're young, and it's a great first try. :) I think you have a lot of potential for web design, and I hope to see you improve your site. I'm also very impressed you decided to make a portfolio at your age. Keep up the work and you'll definitely improve a lot. :)

Thanks so much for the review. :)
I'm really quite clueless at to host it on-site, since I've never done it before. Maybe you could show me? That would be great. :) As for how big the image is, I'm not sure exactly how much I should crop it. This isn't my layout, I don't know how to code for myself which is terrible :(, so I don't know any of the sizes and stuff, and I don't really know how to "read" layout code. :/ Peachy-pink..? Hmm... Maybe. It sounds like too much... I might test it out but I think it might clash. Just my opinion.
Oh yeah, for that border thing, I'm working on that. :P I use Iframes to put FanUpdate on my site, which really sucks. I'm currently learning how to put it on there PHP style. xD I personally like centered text. :3 Makes it look more clean. :D
Trust me, I have improved MASSIVELY to what Color Me Silly used to be, and I know I have LOADS of more room to improve. :) Thanks for pointing out those things, it will help. Once again, thanks for the review! I wish you the best.

on 30th Jun 2009 and said:First off, let me say, please don't take this review too seriously. I'm not an excellent web designer myself, so anything I say about your site is probably just a reflection of my knowledge, or lack thereof, on and my taste in web design.
Secondly, I'm only going to be discussing the design of your website, and not the website in its entirety, meaning a large portion of the content will be ignored in this review.
I think your color scheme works perfectly, and you might even be able to use that peachy color that you used for the background color in the containers on the right hand side as the background color, as well. Either way, it looks good, which is unusual for me as warmer colored websites usually tend to bother my eyes, as while this one is very easy on my eyes.
The overall layout looks pretty professional (I'm iffy about the scroll box, but I'll mention that later.) The header img loaded very slowly for me, which is pretty common for an image that was hosted on photobucket. You might want to host it somewhere else, like, say, the same place you're hosting the webpage?
Your favicon made me smile.
Now speaking of the textarea/scroll box, or whatever that is holding your news articles. I personally can't stand it! Considering that your site is already long enough to the point where the site is scrolling off the screen anyway, I don't want to have to deal with a second scroll bar for news. It just feels weird. That's just my input, though.
I also sincerely wished you'd keep your portfolio on the same site, without going to a completely new subdomain with a new layout.

Thanks so much for the review. :)
I also HATE the big blob of stuff holding my news. I've been trying to contact people to help me fix that, but everyone is ignoring me. Would you know how?
I can host it the same place I'm hosting my webpage? Wow. I've never known that. Thank you!
On the portfolio, I just prefer not having it relate to my site at all. I want it to be used for other reasons, and not connected to Color Me Silly. Otherwise I probably would have it on the same domain.
Once again, thanks for the review. :)
