You Inspire Me

****- (Rated by 3 people, viewed by 163 people)

I run a design firm out of NYC and lately I've been getting a lot of projects for Myspace. The people who requested them generally had pretty lousy designs (an understatement, but I'm trying to be as least critical as possible) on their site and their Myspace pages, so I had an idea to provide a directory of the best made sites to offer some inspirational ideas to designers.

There's next to nothing on there now (I opened this on July 8th), but it'll build quickly. Along with the web design gallery, I'll soon add a logo gallery, as well as design resources. Until I get those areas up, I'm looking for insight on functionality, the actual design of You Inspire Me, and what I might implement to improve it.

I know you feel as though you got dooped on the name, and you kind of did because you-inspire.me sucks when you really wanted inspire.me, I know the feeling.

I'm not even going to critique your css or html because your site shows up fine on my computer and that's fine by me. :)

I love the design, the colors are definitely grabbing. I love dark colors with bright bold elements that grab attention.

I love the concept, although I wish there were descriptions or reasons with each site, but between your site title and the tags/categories it's pretty self explanatory.

Simple, to the point, nice design, as far as I know perfect coding. :P There is one thing I would change about this site and that's the navigation to the right. I feel like you need to add some pink or white (or both) as a hover or as a default look. It kind of hides over there.

Oh and your "Advertise" link at the bottom doesn't seem to be working.

All in all I have given you 4.5 out of 5 starts. I took 1/2 star for the sneaky navigation and I would have only taken 1/4 for you 404 error, but that wasn't an option and I didn't feel you deserved a 1/2 off for a simple error as such. Good job, it's hard to get 4 stars from me. :)

If it's as hard as you say it is to get 4 stars from you, I'm on a bit of an ego rush to have gotten 4 1/2. Thanks! :)

I haven't really gotten around to setting up the advertising yet. I should probably get rid of the link (and the blank advertisements) until I'm ready. And I took your advice and added some pink to the side navigation. Not really sure how much I like it right now (seems a bit bright and too stand-outish), but we'll see how it fares.

Hey, my name's Bryce. I'll be reviewing your site today.

    First Impression
When I first saw your website, I was immediately interested in exploring it further. I was pulled in mainly because of the color scheme. It is very abstract-looking, being a neon purple/pink across a gray background. I also liked the way the name, just like rev.iew.me, took advantage of the .me domain.

    Content
As you mentioned, your site is brand new. So I won't be too harsh on the actual "meat" of the page. What I will look at, however, is what you do have. I see a few people have already submitted their portfolios, which is pretty good for a site that opened less than a week ago.

    Coding
I checked you HTML and CSS. The CSS has just a couple very minor problems. The #navigation li a and #navigation li a.current are not supported in certain CSS versions.

Property opacity doesn't exist in CSS level 2.1 but exists in [css3] : 0.5

There are a few warnings, too. But they're not a huge deal. As far as HTML goes, your good to go!

That's just about it. In conclusion, you have created a great directory website, and I hope it is successful. Everything looks good, other than the two coding problems. Once those are fixed, everything will be ready to go. Thanks for your time. (:

    UPDATED 10 Jul 09:
    Edit: Ah, I see. I didn't realize it was a CSS3 stylesheet.

As pleased as I was with the domain, I still feel like I got ripped off. Some blogger got to "inspire.me" before I did. :(

About the CSS "problems," as far as I know there aren't any. You're trying to validate a CSS3 style sheet as CSS 2.1. It's the same case as if you tried to validate XHTML 1.0 Strict as HTML 4.01 Strict. Non-existent errors will show up as errors.

I have to agree with Silent_dawn. As soon as I opened your page, the design and colour scheme immediately grabbed my attention. With the blogs that I have read, there are far too many blogs that simply have a header, white background and black type. It is very refreshing to find something else.

I think the slight variation of the RSS logo is also very neat. Its still very easily recognizable, but you gave it a unique twist.

I understand that most of us have other commitments aside from our sites, and that yours has only been up for two days. As said before, I find your site very aesthetically pleasing, but I don't really understand where you're going with it. Do you plan to simply showcase different designs? Are people going to vote on them? Are you going to comment on what makes a good design? I guess I am suggesting to maybe include some sort of a "this is what we do here" type statement to make it clear for people who don't necessarily get it right away.

    fixtatik's Response:

I couldn't agree more with that lack of originality in blogs. It's the same with regurgitated resource sites. Absolutely everything is the same. :(

There's actually an "About" page on You Inspire Me near the bottom. I should probably move that to a more visible place, and expand on it a bit more to really say what the site is about.
