i like how you said that your site has high quality resources which is true (:
but my first look at your layout wasnt so great. i dislike the colors you chose because idk i guess it's just me. but the grass is a great addition to the layout that boosted it up a little to me. i just dislike the brown, i guess it's a personal opinion, nothing i really tell you to do about it.
buh, well, your site is pretty average to sorrta good in overall.
and i think that maybe you should literally take off the layout stealer cause that can sierously cause problems for other sites. it's basically jocking IF someone doesn't give credit and PLUS, if they DON'T ask for permission. so, you should maybe add some rules to it or something to make things full of peace

    memorylast's Response:

Thanks for the review :) Sorry you don't like the layout. I know that the browns can be a little dull. But I mean, different people have various opinions on matters - so yeah I can't really do anything about it but pick a better colour combination next time. I'm not really going to bother with fixing up the layout anymore since it's going to be changed soon.

I guess you could elaborate more with the "pretty average to sorta good in overall", it seems kind of vague from this end.

Thanks for the comment on the layout stealer, it's just part of the bundle of MySpace generator scripts. If it's a problem in the future, I'll remove it. I can see how it can be, though.

I am reviewing using Mozilla Firefox with a 1024 x 768 resolution on Windows Vista.

    Layout
I love the layout, it's very clean and fresh looking. My only complaint would be that the space in between the navigation at the top and the blog is quite large and I had to scroll down before I could start reading the blog. Great job with the rounded boxes, I know those can be pretty tricky.

    Coding
I ran the main page through W3's validator, and there were 91 errors and 2 warnings. I'm no expert so I can't tell you exactly what needs fixed, but it seems like one of the major issues is no alt tags on images as well as not closing the img tags. Although I must say, I peeked at the source and the code is so organized, that's always great :) I also ran your stylesheet through the validator, and it came up with 42 errors :X

    About
I like that you wrote more of a biography style "About" section instead of listing random things like a lot of people do. You're very good at writing :) One slight grammar error, in the first paragraph it says "I've learn French" which should probably "I've learned French" or "I know French."

    Graphics
The animated GIFs were great, however the page gives you the loading time of death so maybe create thumbnails or simply text links? Also, the code below them is "<a href="http://memorylast.net"><img src="http://memorylast.net/content/graphics/animated-gifs/facesmash.gif" alt ="Memorylast.net - graphics, resources, layouts, premades..." border="0"></a>
</table>" with an extra random </table> thrown in that would cause an error.

The backgrounds were very pretty, I love the victorian style ones :)

    Resources
The brushes are great. On the fonts, it said there were two pages, but when I clicked on page two it said nothing was there. The Photoshop tutorials looked good, but I can't really judge them that well because I don't use Photoshop.

    Myspace
Not a whole lot, but what you do have is good. I've never seen a layout stealer before which I think is pretty clever, but I've never really spent that much time customizing my myspace. It just makes me wonder a little bit if that might cause problems, because what if someone makes their layout themselves and didn't intend on having someone steal it?

Overall, I think you do have a good site, but it's not terribly original. I've seen a lot of it before, especially the site namer and paisley brushes and what not.

    Thanks for the review :D

Yeah, I worked on the layout on a fairly large screen - my screen resolution is 1680x1050 so I don't have a problem with the scrolling, but I understand that the layout looks a bit awkward on a smaller screen, like on my macbook for example :P

Thanks for the compliment on the 'About' page. I remember the listing random things trend that was going on a while back. I've rewritten the autobiography a couple of times. Thanks for pointing out the grammar error, I don't usually reread everything I write, so it's good that people point out grammar issues.

It's hard to do the whole originality with graphic/resource sites, I mean, most people offer the same things. That's why I try to include a few things that other people have not.

Hi there, Rainie, I'm Erin, and I will be reviewing your website today.

    FIRST IMPRESSIONS:
This is not my first time visiting, but it is my first time seeing this layout. I am impressed! The layout looks well-designed, and everything looks neat at first glance.

    ---

    LAYOUT & OVERALL DESIGN:
I really think this layout is phenomenal. It's a big difference compared to themes I've seen previously, and you did a great job. The grass looks amazing, and you merged it well with the soil. It's such a neat concept. The colors are easy on the eyes, and the main text is legible.

I have just a few suggestions:
    1. Add a hover effect to the sidebar links and the "read more" under the welcome message. Change the color, underline it, whatever.
    2. The green of the "read more" link under the welcome message is kind of hard to read on the grayish-brown background.
    3. This one's not a biggie, but center the navigation, too. It looks slightly off-center between the main content DIV and sidebar.
    4. Maybe add a background to the welcome message? It looks a little out-of-place. Perhaps if you put it in another rounded box, it might tie in better with the rest of the layout.

I just realized that there are tabs over the Recent Comments area. That's cool. It will be more useful when there are more posts and tags to fill up those areas.

    But overall, excellent job.

    ---

    BLOG/UPDATES:
I read your latest post, "Overdue." I like that you kept the site updates information concise and jumped right into an interesting entry. I enjoyed reading this post. It wasn't too long or too short, and I'm not left confused or anything. More importantly, the grammar and spelling seemed just fine. I didn't notice any errors.

    ---

    ABOUT:
A very enjoyable read! I literally sniggered out loud at your remark on dressing like a nun and wearing Paris Hilton sunglasses. Few about pages make me laugh. I like that you seamlessly combined a site history into your autobiography. This was well-written, interesting, and revealing.

I noticed a few sentence fragments but thought they were effective, so I don't care. You also have one comma splice, which is the incorrect use of a comma to separate two independent clauses: "I’m easily disconnected from reality, I have my own theories as to how this world and society runs." I'm not too bothered since your grammar overall is quite good. One thing I noticed was your use of the word "chivalries," and I'm not sure if that's the word you mean to use. Chivalries refers to courtesy and gallantry, usually relating to men or knights. You seem to be referring to something academic. I'm not quite sure what word you might mean to use instead.

    ---

    GRAPHICS:
I like the way this is organized into two columns. It allows for less scrolling.

    - Backgrounds
Your vintage patterns are beautiful. I have seen these used in many places, so I know others feel the same way. I love the color of the teal one (second from the top), but I wonder if it might be too bright and dominant when used as a background.

I love most of your basic patterns, too, especially the argyle ones. I might have to use them some time! (I am a sucker for argyle.) I really love the multi-colored diamond background, too. The only ones that concern me are two of the vertical stripe rainbow patterns in the middle. I feel like they might be too loud and bright as a background. Then again, it's possible that someone might find a way to use it effectively; they are pretty.

The cute ones really live up to their description; they're adorable! The lightning bolt one has a rough white edge around each bolt, though. It would be a cool background if you could fix that.

The miscellaneous patterns are great too. You did a phenomenal job with pretty much all of these. I never realized how many you offered; what a great source your site is for backgrounds! Wow!

One thing I will suggest is not to use textareas to display code. Not only might visitors accidentally edit them before copying it, using them for this purpose is not semantically correct. Check out this tutorial to learn about a more 'proper' way of dipslaying code.

    - Glitter Graphics
While I'm not a fan of glitter graphics, these actually look pretty nice and not garish. You did a nice job, and you offer a wide selection.

    - Quote Graphics
I wasn't expecting anything special, but some of these look incredible! I love the Malfoy ferret one. The characters look really great. Excellent job with the Harry Potter graphics.

The Twilight quotes kind of pale in comparison to the HP ones. Some of them don't seem very special at all, while the animated ones scare the crap out of me. ("This hostage stuff is fun" blinks too fast! Ahh!") I do give you props for the way you did the text on some of them (can't think of the word for it right now), and the first one is nice.

    - Icons
I like the stock icons. The effects are well-executed, and they all look really pretty. I would use some of these myself.

While I generally frown upon the use of celebrity images, I can't deny that you did a nice job with the people and some of the movies/TV icons. And OYAY one with Minerva McGonagall! Big thumbs up there, hehe. The HP House ones look very nice. I like the parchment background on them; it fits appropriately.

    - Scribbles
These are all quite cute, but I'm not particularly impressed. I've seen scribbles of similar quality and theme (food scribbles are quite common) elsewhere. Granted, I can't do these scribbles myself, but still, most of them are kind of run-of-the-mill. Your cartoon scribbles are certainly more interesting than the cute ones, especially Raven and Robin - those stand out to me the most.

    - Wallpapers
Again, some high quality stuff here. I personally would use the "Living Life to the Fullest" abstract one. I totally see other people using these, too. You also offer these in a variety of common sizes, which is excellent. A lot of people seem to only offer 1024x768 and 800x600, even though only about 4% of internet users are still on 800x600 (according to something I saw on W3 Schools)!

    - Premade Layouts
While the composition and design of these are very well done (especially the first one), the styles are kind of outdated now. From your current layout, I know you can make some really creative and impressive layouts, so it's clear that you could offer better designs. I also feel that these might not appeal to as wide an audience anymore since using celebrity images is much less trendy now.

    - Website Templates
I like that you offer them both for people who use PHP includes and for those who don't. The blue and magenta ones are very aesthetically pleasing, but the green one's background is a bit too bright. However, these are all very usable. Nice job.

    - Photo Frames
This is a really cool idea; I've never seen anything like these before, at least not offered in someone's visitor section. It's an interesting use of tables; I wonder if you could style it to work with DIVs instead. (I think working with tables is annoying, hehe... even if this is just copy and paste. All those <tr>s and <td>s!) Unique idea here!

    - Glitter Text Generator
While I don't like glitter text, this is well done and easy to use. There are a lot of styles to choose from, which is great.

    ---

    RESOURCES:
    - Brushes
The first set, "Abstract Art," and the second from the bottom stand out the most to me. They're the most uncommon, and I totally could see myself using the lines with circles, even though I'm not much of a brush-using person anymore. The other ones - the text, the swirls, the handwritten ones - are more generic, but like most of your other work, they're all of good quality.

    - Fonts
Nothing special here, you're just redistributing fonts that people can easily find at font download sites. Perhaps you should try creating your own fonts; that would be much more creative. The link to the second page is broken.

    - Photoshop Actions
You offer a decent selection, and they all produce nice effects. I like the second one best.

    Textures
A good variety here. These all seem to be high-quality, too.

    - Photography
These are neat shots, but I actually feel like they would serve more like textures than what people normally seek stock photos for (or at least what I think of when I see a photography section). There's not much variety here, either, so work on that.

    - Icon Bases
Oh, I like these! Sometimes when people offer icon bases, they're just cropped images with no effects. These are more useful. Nice work.

    - Site Namer
Oh man, a site namer. I feel like if anyone uses these, it's silly... since I think that a site name should have a reasoning or meaning behind it. However, you have some interesting words in here, instead of only frivolous words that sound stupid in a title.

    ---

    TUTORIALS:
I like the way these are organized too (after you get into one of the two sections). The preview image gives you an idea of what you're going to be making, and the text gives a good description.

    - Blending Images in Photoshop
One of the most basic and generic tutorials! With your graphic skill, I'm sure you can offer more interesting and advanced tutorials than this. At least this was easy to follow.

    - Creating a Dreamy Photo
The title on the actual tutorial says "Illuminate Photograph." Is this the same? I can't tell because the images don't seem to be showing up.

    - Creating a Fake Vexel
A lot of "fake vexel" tutorials seem to have bad results, but this looks semi-decent. A simple tutorial.

    - How to Use Photoshop Actions
I've never actually used PS actions, so if I ever do, I might try this out. The directions are clear, and the images really help.

I'm actually not going to mention the rest of the tutorials individually, since they all seem to be well-written and easy to follow. I'll comment on anything that raises some concerns.

    - Beginner's Guide to FTP
In the "How to Log In" guide image, the information by port seems to be missing a word or two, and what I believe is supposed to be "provided" is spelled wrong.

I think you accidentally broke up this sentence wrong: "Sometimes if you’re trying to install something such as perhaps Cutenews. And it doesn’t work, then it will tell you to CHMOD the file / folder." Just get rid of the period after "Cutenews" and make "And" lowercase.

    - How to Get Visitors
You're missing a period at the end of the paragraph under "Comment on other people's sites."

The phrasing is awkward in "Join Message Boards/Forums." These expressions are sentence fragments: "Because you usually have a Site link in your mini-profile so people usually click those. And also if I post a thread that requires people to look at my site." Try this alteration to make them complete sentences: "You usually have a Site link in your mini-profile so people usually click those. Also, sometimes I post threads that require people to look at my site."

You have some randomly capitalized words in the "Making Them Come Back" section. Not counting any of the headings, the ones I noticed were update, site, grammar, and activities.

Under "Proper Grammar," you have a sentence fragment (how ironic). Get rid of the "because" at the start of the last sentence, and then it will be a complete sentence and not a dependent clause seeking an independent clause!

The first sentence under "Make Activities" is also a sentence fragment for the same reason, except with a different word; just get rid of "by" and things are good.

    ---

    MYSPACE:
I'm actually not going to review your Myspace section because I don't use Myspace, and I don't know if the stuff will actually be useful. I wouldn't know how to rate or judge Myspace stuff in any accurate manner. And I am tired and lazy, to be perfectly honest!

    ---

    OVERALL:
You have an abundance of high quality content, Rainie. I was most impressed by your backgrounds, since you have a large selection, and they are things I would definitely use. Nearly everything is either well-written or well-made, and I am impressed by the quality of your work. Your current layout is also stunning. There were a few minor things that could use fixing that I pointed out, but otherwise, excellent job. It was a pleasure to review your site.

Thanks for the detailed review, Erin! :D It was really helpful. I love how you covered all aspects of the site. I will take some of those constructive comments to use.

Thank you for covering some of the grammar issues as well :P Some of them were from ages ago and I don't really take the time to re-read the tutorials.

First Impression: 9/10 Not bad! I did like this layout alot, but I thought it's a bit too earthy and I expected it to be a summer layout since it's summer in America + Great Britain. I also thought the green grass at the top was a bit too much, I would prefer it if it was more paler, I think it would blend in more with the layout.

Layout: 9/10 I love the coding on this layout! It's different and I like the setup where the links are. The bit where it says: "Welcome to Memorylast a graphics and resource site owned by Rainie. Memorylast is your ultimate site for profile resources, graphics and other resources for your web & graphic design needs" was good, but I feel it should be longer to fill up the space, but not too long so it looks cluttered. I love where you positioned the twitter update box, although the "t" icons bother me because they're not transparent, but I understand that's not your fault.

About: 10/10 Your About me section was both entertaining and informative. You've told us basic details, and added a hint of humour at the end. Best autiobiography I've read on a website.

Graphics: 10/10 I love your content! I'm falling in love with it! The only problem is that I hate glitters, I find them tacky ad annoying and that you've used celebs in your premade layouts, which is actually illegal if you didn't take the photos yourself. Sorry!

Resources: 9/10 You've got good resources, but the thing is, I've seen them all before! The fonts are nice, but many sites display those same ones which gets annoying. The brushes are a bit bland and slightly unoriginal but I'm quite fond of the site namer. You can actually get some good results from this one unlike most of the other tacky ones.

Tutorials: 9/10 You have some simple tutorials that I've seen many times, but you have a few that I haven't seen much which is nice to see. I will be using some of these myself!

Overall: You have a brilliant site with lots of content, just a few minor glitches and that's it really.
