****- (Rated by 3 people, viewed by 103 people)

Personal blog and photography website of a socially cynical nineteen year old female.

Things I wonder about: Are the images too big- do they take too long to load on your internet connection? Did you actually find the blog interesting? Did you read anything in the Visitor section?

I am here for suggestions! Tell me what you think!
Thanks for checking out my site.

    About myself:
Hi i am christine , i am using google chrome on a vista pc with a resolution of 1280x800.

    My First impression:
Wow! The jellyfishes sure do have style :)

    Site layout:
I like how the colors are put together (do i sound sterosonic?) but yea , the simplicity is not overwhelming with your layout because the jelly fishies look really neat and originial , way to go ;) theres also some effect that the jellyfishes have on me, it really brings me into the site. Though after the lines the layout does look sort of blah.

    Site name:
i got lost after anti, but i guess that's a good thing, your site name is really original , all though i wish i knew what it means.

    Site concept:
Apparently your site is "project three six nine" correct? THATS SO awesome :3 , i like how you have a goal that you have set up and wish to accomplish , and you make that goal clear and visible to all of your visitors.

    /Webmistress:
I admit , your a very pretty young lady (i am not a pedophile , thank you very much (; ) and i like how you actually do show yourself on your site. not that many people have the guts to do that (HAHA)
Your camera is rather big, i would have died by now if i carried something that feriousous around with me, yes you are an in durance fighter :) but of course it seems that all nikons have high quality image capturing effects , and the bigger the better (: , but then i noticed how there was continuous lines of cameras you use, i consider that friendly advice , thank you :P

    /Visitor:
The bit about work in progress made me disappointed, but once i saw all those links , i was ... DAZZLED :D
    |Fonts: Nice font collection , though it would have been nice if there were made by you , though the last one was cool how it was your handwriting :)
    |Script 1 : that's cool , i noticed the use of it on your side bar -points-
    |Script 2: MAN i have been looking for a no right click script that doesn't show an annoying pop up window . i also like how you state where you got it from :)
    |i don't feel like going in detail about the other tutorials so onward to art!
    | Graffiti: wow that's cool :) I never knew you could do such things with flour
    |photo: I am a beginner and this tutorial did help, by shutter speed did you mean how it continuously takes pictures? you weren't clear on that :/

    /Domain:
    |about: OMG i knew i was going to find out what your site name was about, a clock eh ? :)
    |Credits: The list is rather short, but at least you have one (:

    Overall:
Your site is a small site. But i like how it's mostly mere purpose is for you to share your daily photo blogs , at which a site i do not see everyday, which is good.

    Suggestions:
I know i'm putting this out of the blue but it would be nice if there was a page or something that had a complete archive of all pictures , but i understand the blog serves as that purpose , but that's not exactly what i mean

Thank you for putting your site up for review :) It was my pleasure to review your site

This is going to be my opinion on what I think about your website. You don't have to make any changes I suggest :) (sorry if i repeat some things that may have been said in the previous review, i didn't read it)

    Site Name:
Your website name is rather original and not so easy to remember. If I were to close the link, erase all history, I wouldn't be able to remember it.. maybe that's just me

    Layout / CSS:
I'm not going to say it's bad, and I'm not going to say it's great. It's on the rather bigger side. The 730 - 800PX width size is fine, that's usually around the size that many people use, but the height of 300PX + is a little big. 250PX is more than enough height - or maybe that's just me. The background doesn't go very well with it either, since theres so much going on in the header, maybe you should use something a bit more simple.
Your CSS actually looks fine to me, as in the colours. They are used in the layout which is always nice to see. I really like the links, they grab the visitors attention. I think you should add a little more to your welcome message or not have it at all. I'm one to speak but I'm going to be changing mine, I think maybe you should include a little bio (not too much though) in the welcome section. This way, people will know who the owner is and feel a little more welcome. I also think that you should make your font a bit smaller. It's fine for me to see, but not everyone has as big of resolution as you and I. Maybe try putting something like this in your boy section of your CSS font:normal 13px/16pt "Lucida Grande", "Lucida Sans Unicode", Verdana, Arial, sans-serif; (all on one line). It could also improve the size of your welcome message greatly. You also have a lot of blogs showing. I don't think its needed since they are past blogs and people generally wont be reading or commenting on them, learn how to change the number of blogs shown here: http://thistudio.shoox.org/numberofblogs.php. Also the images used in them could be shrunk down a bit.

    Webmistress:
This page is well organized and easy to navigate around. It's not to cluttered and to the point. Simple is the way to go :) I like your camera :)

    Visitor:
Fonts - Since these weren't made by you I think you should put a credit link to where you got them from. Otherwise, people will or may say that you stole them since there isn't proper credit.

Tutorials - your web and related tutorials are usable but could be a bit confusing to a beginner. They are explained well, but maybe a little more in depth explanation would be better
your art ones are very well explained, all your tutorials should be like this.
home brewing is very interesting, I may have to try it myself some time lol

    Domain:
I really like this section. Once again it's very simple and to the point which is nice to see. About the name is very interesting, or so I thought :)

    Over all:
Your website has lots of potential, potential that seems to be hiding just a little bit. Keep doing what your doing :). Maybe you could add tutorials for HTML/XHTML CSS PHP etc, people are generally looking for things like that.

    Antikythera's Response:

    Thanks for the review!
I like my layout.. I know its big- I've thought about that myself, the height of the header image, if thats what you mean- you just said "layout" so I assume you are referring to the header image when you talk about 'the height'.
I set the number of blogs intentionally.. My site is a photoblog and my friends look at the pictures and back entries regularly, so why waste time having to load more pages? I think the length of the page is inconsequential as long as it doesn't take more than 30 seconds to scroll to the bottom. I read my back entries, also- thats the point of my website, is to document growth and change over an extended period of time. If I didn't value my back-entries, I wouldn't keep them at all.
I'm not really a fan of the bio-in-the-sidebar trend. I think it clutters the sidebar with information that is not directly pertinate to the opening page- all the information that would be there is in the 'about me' section. I'd rather keep it clean and simple.
I agree about the fonts thing- though the credit is included in the zip files, as I mention on the fonts pages. The reason they are there is because my friends who aren't very technically inclined use them for show fliers and the like- its an easy way to make it available.
Again with the Tutorials, just snippets I find interesting- maybe someone else will. My website is not catered toward the absolute novice, I'm not here to teach you HTML- there are LOADS of other, more legitimate websites to do that!

Anyway, thanks a bunch for the review! I appreciate your time.

First of all, I love the font you have on your header. I’ll have to do some snooping around on your website to find out what it is. I quite like the colours in your header, and I feel like if you removed the blue border surrounding the image and just had the brushes trail off to the sides on the screen it would look so much better. At the moment it looks a little bit ‘trapped’ almost, and I’d really like to see those brushes in their entirety. And I totally just realised they’re jellyfish. Awesome! Are they from pictures you took yourself?

I really like your photography (and it really sucks you lost your camera!). I would actually prefer if the images in your layout were larger, but this is just my preference and I can see how it could potentially alienate some visitors. The size you have at the moment is quite good though I think they’d look better cropped in a widescreen format (if that makes sense?). I think a border around the photos would probably frame them nicely. As far as loading times, it’s not a problem for me. My browser is behaving weirdly at the moment and doesn’t seem to be caching things so everything is reloading with every page I visit. I don’t have to wait long for all the images to load though so that’s a pretty good sign.

Even though you’ve got project 365 on here, I still would like to look at more of your photography work. Maybe a small gallery/portfolio of work you’ve done (I noticed you’ve done some commission work) or some of the shots you think are your best.

Layout wise, my first suggestion to you is different body font. I’m a huge fan of Century Gothic as a font, but not as your body text. The shape of the letters makes it hard to read in large blocks of texts, and I found myself skipping over a lot of what you had to say. If you’re really attached to it then try increasing the line height a lot, and possibly even the font size. Still on the subject of font, I personally found it really annoying the way your links ‘jump’ on hover as I think you have different font sizes specified. I would suggest removing that (if that’s what causing it), leaving the font as normal – no text-transform attributes – and just having it change colour on hover.

I edited your font on Firebug so I could read a bit more. I do like the way you write (the little bit I read) and found your ‘Happy Labour Day’ post quite funny – kind of obvious though huh? In some of the other posts I got a little lost, I think you just need to structure your blogs better. Talk about your offline life then things online maybe? So it doesn’t go ‘offline, online, offline, online’. A bit more ‘flow’ would be good.

I took a quick look at your ‘Basic Photography’ article and my first thought was ‘What, no pictures?’ I think these could be really beneficial to your article; you can show people an average image and how doing something simple like adjusting the focus could improve it.

Your wheat paste article is interesting, though I’m certainly not going to use it for the purposes listed in your article =P. It might come in handy though (for something, who knows!) so I’m glad I had a look at it. Again I think pictures would be great, and would break up the text nicely since there is so much. I like the two images you have of a bit of art, and I think if you have the opportunity to take more shots like that it could really make the page look great. Maybe even a few in progress shots of pasting some art up?

I’m not a fan of the tutorials you have since they’re so basic and don’t really explain what they’re doing. If you want to have these maybe it would be a good idea of breaking the code down into sections and explaining what each section does, this way people can actually learn something instead of just copy/pasting. Also, save yourself some bandwidth and just link people to the fonts you like. If you didn’t make them why waste your space?

I was browsing around and then decided I wanted to get back to your homepage, so naturally I scrolled back up to your header to get back there. No such luck. No worries, I headed over to the sidebar...nothing there either. A link back to the homepage would be great. However I just realised that the Project 365 link on your navigation heads to your homepage. Hmm, perhaps sort these links out? Also just realised that your navigation header is a different colour to the rest of your headers and lacks a border as well. Give the headers a little padding underneath, maybe like 10px, so they’re not suffocating whatever they’re on top of so much. Incidentally I think those navigation links could do with a bit of padding – just so the font isn’t so squished up the edges. Let it breathe!

I think a proper footer on your site would go a long way. I’d move the striped background you have at the top running behind your header and stick it down there. Then possibly overlay a grey or white box over the top and put your footer information in there, and also some of the domain information. A lot of the information you have under domain is unnecessary I think, especially the bit that tells me what resolution I’m browsing on.

I think you have a pretty good site here, but I think a stronger emphasis on the photography side would be fantastic. I know that it is quite focused on photography (yeah, I nearly sounded crazy) but when I was browsing I kept forgetting that. I’ve suggested it to someone before, and I think it could be really good here as well – have your latest project 365 shot in your sidebar and link to your 365 category that way.

In your blogs talk more about your photography. I know you don’t have a camera at the moment, but I think it would be good if you could post a picture or two and then maybe describe what about the image you do or don’t like, what inspired you to take that shot and other things like that. I saw a few posts that had lots of pictures in them, but not really much about taking the photos or things like that.

You seem quite passionate about your photography and I just think it would be good if we could see that passion through your blog posts, and not just through photos.

Good luck with your website and photography (especially getting another camera), and I hope this review helped.

    Antikythera's Response:

Hey, thanks for checking out my site and taking the time to review it- I appreciate it!
I am going to change the header image to a link right away- it seems so obvious, but honestly, it never occurred to me. I wonder if maybe you are browsing on a low resolution, because I have no idea what you are talking about when you refer to the navigation links as squished..
I see what you mean about the link hover.. I believe that must be extra text spacing that needs to be taken care of.
My aim isn't really to teach people, its moreso to document my life and my growth over the 365 days- so I like to include my day to day life, also. I know what I did to take the pictures and I feel that most of my readers aren't going to know what I mean when I talk about ISOs and Color Temperature in degrees Kelvin.. My online 'life' is not an interesting one, and when people go on about their leech FTP issues or their really cute webrings, I tend to bore very quickly. You may be right, though.
I agree with the header and footer ideas.. The jellyfish isn't a brush but a (quite vivid) image I picked up somewhere.. I really wish I remembered where so that I could give credit and link the artist's site- I remember it being cool. Darn.
The project 365 link was intentional.. the blog is the project 365.
I wonder if you mean panoramic when you say 'widescreen format''? I don't own a wide angle lens and cropping my photos in such a way would result in alot of data loss- I.E I would just have to increase the file size by 200% and cut the edges off. Not really the same effect.
I will consider your font suggestions.. I really like Century Gothic and it looks fine on my (GIANT) monitor - so I'll have to ask for some more feedback on that one, thanks.

Oh, and the header font is called Zebra and you can download it on my website. :)

    Thanks alot!
    Taylor
