Rocket Worm

***** (Rated by 3 people, viewed by 144 people)

Rocket Worm is an artistic tribute dedicated to the 1994 and 1996 original Earthworm Jim video games and the character and world of Earthworm Jim. It’s not the most popular subject area, but I’ve been running it for 10 years now.

I'm looking to find out what your first impressions are, and what I'm doing wrong etc,. Thank you. :)

    First Impression
On the layout, just wow. I love it! It looks so funny and entertaining. Just, wow. I've never heard of this subject, an this the first fansite I've seen on it! Good on you! The site was quite fast loading, considering the big image in header.

    Layout and Coding
Like I said above, the layout is awesome. I like the rollover on the navigation links, looks good. Your coding passed validation, with 1 warning though. Basically this warning is that the specified character encoding in the header is different from the value in the element. But that's it =)

    Content
On your about page, I like the Confused? Dazed? Having too many Chip Butty induced palpitations?
Fear not! This is a good place to find your bearings.
That's entertaining for the visitor. I can easily say I have learnt alot about rocket worm and earthworm Jim. from this site, so thanks for that ;D!

The Credits and Thank You's page is sweet. It's nice you have a description for each credit, that's nice.

Your Terms of Use seem very reasonable, and credit it given where it is needed.

Oh my, I haven't seen a layout change page in ages. That's awesome, and your layouts look amazing. All 3 layouts are very good quality.

All the content in your Interact section are of good quality, and I'm sure a visitor would come back for more.

Wow, all I can say for the World section is that must of taken ages. There's so much content, and it's of really good quality as well.

The Gallery page was fast loading, which is surprising as you have soo many images. Nice they're all categorized into sections by there years.

The other sections I checked out looked good aswell.

Nice job with your site, it looks amazing with a load of content for people to read through. I'm amazed you've kept it going for 10 years! That shows determination and dedication.

Good luck with your site ;D!

Layout/Design: My very first thought and impression: OMG I LOVE IT! While I'm not a huge fan of left aligned layouts anymore, you sure make it work and look nice. The artwork is very well done and I'm ecstatic to know that you illustrated it yourself. The Twitter bird is well done too and original. I also like the RSS feed icon, but feel it blends in too much with the bubbles (I'm sure that's the point) and so I didn't catch it until I really looked at the design.

The logo kind of off balances the layout being in the top left corner. I feel you could have made it work more so being above the navigation, right before the start of the bubbles there. Perhaps titled to the left. Sort of arched like the navigation links are, but not too much, to fit with the border of the bubbles. (if you get what I'm saying) And probably bigger.

I'm not too fond of the Gallery and Forum links being above the main navigation. Although small, I have the urge to click on them first before clicking on the in-site links. (this is actually the point of why links are in certain order on websites. It leads the visitor to where exactly you want them to go first then next and so forth) I would have either got rid of it and keep it under interactive or put it below rather then on top. One main reason for this is because it leads off of the main site. If you want your main point to be about the Gallery and Forum, then that's fine and dandy.

Content/Pages: Your pages are very neat and organized.

About: I feel you could add the site history, credits & thank you's, and additional credits that are under the intro (about rocket worm) on its own page under "site specific information". I think it would fit more better there, rather then where it is now.

I like how you have a short description at the bottom of every link on the "world" page and feel you could implement this also within the "about" page. That way, it stays consistent.

Wallpaper: Adding screen resolution sizes would be very helpful to those who would like to download your wallpapers. Creating additional sizes would also be pretty nice since not everyone has the same screen resolution. ;)

Icons & Cursors: A short explanation/tutorial on how to install the cursors would probably be super helpful to those who don't how, but would love to use them.

Desktop Toy: Same as above, if a certain installation needs to be done, it would be helpful to have a short tutorial on how to included. ;)

Drawing Board: If it is currently down, no point in linking to it at the moment.

World: The "character biographies" link would be better suited below the "Earthworm Jim information & history" link, rather then at the very bottom.

Contact: I'm not a huge fan of the contact page leading away from the main site and to your blog instead. Consistency is key and having certain pages leading away from the main site can actually confuse a lot of visitors. Not everyone is web savvy and so a change in scenery can quickly get them confused on where they are or how they got there. Trust me, I speak from experience.

Overall: I really enjoyed viewing your website. You can obviously see the amounts of time and work you have put into this site and I think any fan of Earthworm Jim could really appreciate such a wonderful fan site. With just a few minor fixes here and there, this site is just about perfect! Great job and a keep up the awesome work! =)

Thanks so much for the review Roxy. :)

Great suggestions...thank you. I was worried that the forum and gallery link detracted from the main menu...and you helped confirm my fears!
I'll make a note of these and Kersheys notes and get improving things when I can.

Hey there :) I'll be reviewing your site with Windows 7, Mozilla Firefox and a resolution of 1280x800 .

My first impression on the site is that the layout looks fantastic. I've never played the game before but the design already makes me intrigued. It says here that you illustrated it yourself? If so, great job! The characters are amazingly well-drawn.

Also, you have a very interesting way of linking to your Twitter account. The bubbles definitely draw eyes to it (being a link) but if a person were to just scroll quickly, they probably wouldn't notice it. I'm not entirely sure on what method you could use to make it more noticeable, perhaps you could make it hold a sign that says Twitter? Just a suggestion though :)

I'd talk on how you should change your image navigation into a CSS "imagemap" but it works very well on its own. Props for remembering to put an alternate text. Disabling images doesn't disable users from navigating your website.

I'm not really a stickler for this part, but it looks like your HTML is invalid, but the only error there is extremely minor. You're simply missing a semi-colon on the copyright symbol at the bottom of the page.

On your about page, it's good you made sub-pages, especially since you have a lot of information to give. I'm a bit bothered by the drop-shadow on the text though. On headers, it's alright with me but seeing it en masse with all those links so close together, it's a bit ... confusing? to my eyes. Maybe for ordinary links, you could remove the shadow instead. That way, they look much sharper and clearer.

I also noticed that you have several layout themes to choose from. I won't comment on those anymore since I've already started on this latest one, but the last one with the scrollable box looks amazing :D

On the Interact page, you've pretty much got everything. In the wallpapers page though, maybe you should list for which resolutions the wallpapers are available in so that users won't have a hard time downloading then realizing it isn't even in their resolution.

On the desktop toy (hey that's pretty neat), maybe you should include what operating systems it works for and how to install it (if ever).

The World page is extremely informative - particularly the game Information and History section. Kudos to being such a dedicated fan :D

I was a bit surprised by your gallery section though. It took me four clicks (and page loads!) from the World page to view a single screenshot - and it's even in a page that has a completely different layout. For less internet-savvy people, they might get confused and might not be able to get back to the main website from there. Maybe you could find a way to integrate the images into the main website without having to use Coppermine? It might be difficult though, considering the amount of content you have.

Your character biographies are from the manual right? No problem there then :) From what I randomly skimmed, I haven't seen any of the errors you mention. I know you're planning to illustrate them although for now, perhaps you could put a temporary image from official art or something similar? Just to give the user an idea of what they look like - for now at least.

Anyway, your website is amazing. You have a [:)]load of content and information that could prove invaluable to any fan. Your gallery is full of a number of varied images (734 as of now) including fan art and comics - that's going beyond the usual :) Best of all? You maintained and updated for a full ten years! Just a few fixes here and there and you should be good to go :D

    lemm's Response:

Thanks Kersheys...there’s a lot of stuff you mentioned that is really good advice. :)

I'll fix that html error & too much drop shadow for starters...that's the easiest bit.

I wrote the character Bios myself based off the manuals and TV show (in parts)...I've been fixing grammar mistakes when I get time to...so I'm about 40% done with that. The image suggestion is good, because I have no visual aids for them at the moment.

Eek...clearly I have a great deal of work to do for the gallery stuff...I will certainly think about how to do that well. I keep putting it off because like you say...the amount of content to integrate means it would take a great deal of time to do manually. I'll think of something though. 4 clicks to get to something is crazy...

Thank you for the review. :)
