Super Carly's Super Blog

This is my blog, it homes my reviews, tutorials and thoughts.

It's not overly 'designed up'; my content is my priority.

Thanks for reviewing me.

Kind of a fiddly design in my opinion, but that's just my taste, not a constructive thing for me to say which simply won't do will it?

http://www.supercarly.co.uk/1/hello-world/ could possibly do with being deleted.

Nice use of the word 'super'. It's a super word, I think.

'Buy this book now...' - consider changing this to, say, 'Buy this book from Amazon.com'. Proper elipsis characters (…) could be inserted if you wanted to achieve perfection.

'Things I like to write about: Uncategorized' looks a bit lazy. Categories can be excluded from such lists.

Good that you're using the HTML label tag, but the for attribute would be the icing on the cake.

Links to Twitter, (Squidoo, LibraryThing,) LinkedIn and Facebook are scattered all over the place. Some sites get multiple links, others are not so privileged. Consider consolidating this a bit.

Do people use those buttons for sharing on Facebook, Twitter, StumbleUpon, Digg, Delicious etc? Don't they have toolbars installed on their browsers? Maybe it's unneccesary clutter. Or maybe it can do no harm. I only really mention it because I want to break the 300-word barrier.

When I click onto your search box, and then wonder what it is and click out, the text does not reappear. It would be moderately even more betterer if it was redisplayed. Here's a slightly improved kind of search form, which I nicked from Pearsonified:

    <input class="text_input" type="text" value="To search, type and hit enter" name="s" id="s" onfocus="if (this.value == 'To search, type and hit enter') {this.value = '';}" onblur="if (this.value == '') {this.value = 'To search, type and hit enter';}" />

Shock horror, the dark background is displayed against the text when the page is loading, and it looks a bit ungainly. See http://www.zeldman.com/2009/05/22/floats-clears-and-color-flashes/

They may seem desperate picky things - they are - and that's probably a good sign. There was nothing glaringly awful to complain about. Well done about that.

This website loaded extrememly fast. I didn't have to wait at all! I can't remember the last time I went to a website that loaded that quickly.

Right away I feel connected to the website owner because she has pictures of herself and her dog.I enjoyed her "About Me" blurb.

I enjoyed the current blog post she had up called "Five Questions to ask Yourself". There was some really good advice in the article.

One thing I don't like is when there is a link to an outside website and clicking on the link makes me leave the website I was on. This happened to me when I clicked on the link to her facebook and linked in pages. I would prefer that they opened in a new window.

    First Impression:
Simple layout, and neat. Interesting.. Let me explore! :)

    Name/URL:
It isn't too long and quit simple to remeber if you can remember the last bit co.uk. Then again google would re direct me if I happend to type in the wrong URL. There are no hyphens symblos or numbers (They mke it harder for people to either remeber of type in) So AWESOME to that.

    Layout:
All the colors match. That is always my first piroity. They are also all browser friendly so if I look at the site from my iPod i won't burn my eyes out at bright colors. I really dislike neon colors on websites. They look horrible. But your website looks great and you have managed to make a very nice grey layout which can be very hard to do. Props for that. I like the pink that is with it. I also really like how you have added pictures. It gives it that personal touch that you can't get with other sites on blander layouts. pictures are always awesome! I guess that is it for layout design.

    Validations:
XHTML 1.0 = it has 129 Errors, 54 warning(s). I know this isnt a piroity for you but you should really get into a habit of making sure that you don't have this many errors.
CSS= level 2.1 has 125 erorrs. It is much easier in my opinion to fix the ones in CSS so you should at least make an effort in the validation of this portion.

    Spellings/Grammer:
From what I see no spelling mistakes that I can notice with a quick sweep around the website. I don't spend a whole lot of time with grammer or spelling which is bad but as long as it isn't too noticable and isn't noticable right away then it isn;t that bad. But I couldn't find anything from my check.

    Content:
The latest blog posts are more advice and the idea you gave me was that is was a personal blog. If you still really want to have advice articles then I think you should have a seperate page just displaying them elsewhere. Other than that your description up top says all. It is a personal blog but the part I could not find and maybe I just didn't look hard enough but I couldn't find the reviews and the tutorials. unless the articles where your tutorials then I am blind.

    Originality:
It is hard to talk about this when there isn't much other than blog articles. i can tell you I have been to soo many personal blogs and that is also part of my website but the thing that makes your original it the advice in your blog. I guess that is becasue you know a lot on that topic whihc makes it awesome advice because it is coming from someone with experience.

    Extras:
What I mean by this is things I haven't commented on yet. Some things are the content on the bottom. I like how you display your other activity. I have never seen that before (in the way you have done it).

    Overall:
I really like it but the validations need to be fixed big time. It is ok for 1 or 2 mistakes but 120 or so is a lot. I also thk you should have more of what is says. Such as more personally blogs and advice but in seperate showing areas. Otherwise it can be soo amazing!! It is already but you can strive to be better!

Nice site. It's a good, simple layout which makes everything nice and easy to find and the colors go together prety well, there isn't much to comment about really.

I would possibly suggest that you use more pictures in the blog posts themselves as there's a lot of text right now and nothing to break it up, which can make it look a bit cluttered.

The layout is very good, I like how you've managed to put quite a lot of information at the bottom of the page without it looking too messy or cluttered.

Overall a good site, keep up the good work!

    Carly's Response:

Thanks for the review; you're right, more pictures needed in posts!

I started off doing this and got lazy!

    Cheers. Carly :)
