Aright, I’m not a huge fan of simple sites so you can guess what I’m going to say, but I do enjoy the color pattern you chose for this design, the site name is pretty much the sit URL, consider something more CREATIVE next time, this is too regular and plain old boring in my opinion, so this is a personal blog sites, most people don’t post personal blog sites for judgment or reviews but here you clearly crossed that line, so deal with the pains. LOL! The big orange title just grabs too much attention and after a while gives me a headache, I don’t want to see that huge font, and then the text, is super tiny in my screen because I have a huge computer screen. The dates and comments is working pretty well, I do like how you put that into place. It functions well if you ask me. I really do adore your About page because it’s so thoroughly explained, fantastic job on the Archives page. You’ve ordered and aligned them so well I can’t find any flaws, your scripts page is a bit empty, and I hope you fill it up with even more categories as time passes. The Links page is kind of out of place, why isn’t it placed next to the Scripts. I’d normally wouldn’t see that if I didn’t take the time to view your source codes, you’re pretty much bored me out now with the same routine, I don’t see anything out of ordinary or brilliant, something original or creative, just a normal regular average every day blog.

You've got a really decent website. I prefer sites like yours rather than sites that are really full of designs and complicated.
The shadow under your header image is a good add because if that was any lighter, it would've probably made your website shine really brightly, causing some visitors to complain about how blinding the layout is. mm yea, I think it looks really fine. The header image also has a pattern to it which gives it a nice touch and I like how your navigation tab stays on the page you're at.
One thing that semi-bothers me is that the drop shadow from the bottom of the header image doesn't follow with the tab o.o it makes it look.. odd XD perhaps the light gray underline was suppose to substitute the drop shadow? mm. another thing that makes me puzzled a bit is the hover effect for the navigation. The whole colorscheme seems to be light-colored and then all of a sudden when you hover over a navigation link, it turns dark olive greenish color for the background. From my viewpoint, I think it would've been better if the hover navigation link was a rather really light blue color like the light blue on your header image. the text color can remain black, but from white background to light blue =D the tab that is sticking out can stay just as is or maybe the text color can change on that? Oh well, doesn't matter, still looks fine =)
I notice that your website is mainly a blogging website? I really like how balanced your website looks on my computer. Your website takes up my entire screen, yet there's enough space to make it look just right and not too spacey, you know what I mean?
Browsing through your other pages, they all seem really organized. One thing I might mention is that your Archives and Tags page. The links on their is starting to get really really long and it's just one column of links. Perhaps you can make a second or third column to balance out your page? =)
Good thing is that you don't have any illegal images on your website.
hmm overall I do believe that your website is good. I also believe that it can go through small improvements (if that is what you desire as well) just like any websites. This review is just mainly from my perspective, so don't feel too bad about all of the things that I don't like about your site, it still looks fine!
Good job on your site and I look forward to some improvements later on =)

Simple and clean. The over-all feel of the layout is almost too simplistic. I like that the colors are soft and relaxing. Aqua colors always make me feel relaxed. But while the color choices are nice, I think they add to the simplicity of the site. Bolder color use might help tone down the simple look.

Your header text (image) seems small in comparison to the full width and size of the layout. I feel a larger font size would help it stand out more.

The gray line under the header is too dark in my opinion. I think it would have worked better with the aqua if the color was a slightly lighter gray. The fact that the line breaks where the 'active' menu item is, is rather distracting. The line beneath the active menu item is less thick and lighter in color which seems to give it an unbalanced look. I think you would achieve a more balanced look with the lines being closer in color and size.

The hover attribute also varies in height between the active and inactive menu items. This may be my obsessive compulsive opinion of the day, but I think it would be better if the sizes were also more equal. It's some what distracting for me to be rolling over the menu and suddenly the sizes change.

I really like the way you have your meta data set up. However, I feel your actual blog entries get lost in the over-all size of the layout. Most of them are relatively short (like mine would be if I blogged), so they're only two or three lines long. You could give the illusion that you wrote more by actually decreasing the size of the layout.

I agree with Meggan that I see this layout smaller, centered, and with the menu going all the way across the size of the layout.

    ------ Text -------
Your text size is easily read and the color is both easily seen and coordinates well with your layout. No complaints.

    ------ Links ------
I think that your link color in your actual text could stand out a little bit more. Color wise it's very close to your text color. It's a little bit lighter but I almost have to be reading the text to notice that it's a link.

A lot of visitors scan read when they visit websites. Most will stop and read what a link is about really quickly if they see one in the body of text. This is one reason it is beneficial to get in the habit of making your links stand out more from your text. Also those with visual problems often times have trouble differentiating the text from the link if they are very close in color.

I like that you provide a method of letting visitor's know that links will take them off your site.

    ------ Navigation ------
Your navigation is straight forward and easy to find. All suggested changes have been previously discussed. :)

    ------ Footer -------
    Simple, non-cluttered.

    ------ Accessibility Information ------
From my previous reviews, I'm starting to see that I'm an accessibility nut-case, so I guess I'll start with the content by going here. :)

I like the way your sub-headings appear on the right-side. It can see how that would really allow a visitor to scan through quickly to find the topic of information that they would most want to read or are looking for.

Are those access keys available for use in all browsers or programs for the disabled without the possibility for disruption? It's been about a year before I looked into using access keys. I remember I decided not to use them because so many programs for the disabled have different access keys built into them and I didn't want to cause any disruption.

    ------ About Amelie ------
Where you say "reworking of Sasha's" it kind of looks off with the link just being the name. The image moves the 's over and almost looks for a moment as if you left it off. I understand why you did it that way, but I would reword the sentence to be more like this "...and the other being a complete reworking of NL-PHPMail originally written by Sasha." That way it leaves off the 's and doesn't look so strange.

I'm glad that your include a last updated date on your informative pages.

    ----- Contact ------
I had to laugh when I read this page. You remind me so much of myself that way.

    ----- Site History -----
You might consider stating on the main "About Not-Noticeably" page that your 1st clique is now closed. You state that you'd moved it to your new domain in 2001 but do not state until it is clicked that it is now closed. I clicked to see it only to find out it was closed. I would consider making that clearer right-off the bat. :)

    ------ FAQ -------
I like that your FAQ is powered by PHPAskIt and therefore able to be highly interactive.

    ------- Archives --------
    Neat, organized, typical archives page.

    ---- Tags -----
Have you considered turning your tag list into two columns? It might balance out the tag cloud at the top which takes up a great deal of the layout width-wise.

    ----- Scripts and Links ------
Organized neatly. No complaints and no suggestions.

    ---- Coding -----
You know what? I'm not even going to go into it. You know more about it than I do and your site validates both for XHTML and CSS. No errors found - not surprising. :)

    ----- Over-all -----
I think you're a talented web-designer and certainly a talented web-developer, but I feel like this layout falls short of what your previous layouts were. I feel like this layout would work better if the width were not so wide. I saw where you mentioned that you were wanting something different and I feel that in some ways you achieved that, but I can't help but feel that the width of the layout over-powers what your trying to say by seeming out of proportion to the amount of text you actually have.

I hope that manages to make sense. I really enjoyed your site Amelie, but I can't help but feel that you're more talented than the current layout shows. :)

    Hey Amélie!
    Layout
Okay, the first thing I notice is that your layout is not noticeable. Yeah, just like your sitename says it! So you have done an awesome job on choosing your sitename! I really don't like the way your blog is build up. A positive thing is, that I haven't seen any site so far, that has the blog that way. But I think the usual way would work better! Overall your layout is very simple, maybe a little bit to simple. But your colors do match and that's positive thing again!
    About
You have alot of informations on your about page which is awesome! I am really sorry about the thing with your brother. I think it's an great idea to have a memory site for him! Your fact about you were pretty interessting, I read them all =) You also have alot of informations about your previous history in web-design, which is awesome! I am always interested in those things. I will maybe read them if I have more time than I have right now!
    FAQ
I am not going to review this section, but seems like your visitors are really using it alot!
    Archive
Yeah the same thing as on the FAQ thing, not going to review this section.
    Tags
And another thing I am not going to review. I don't understand why you have this link up on your navigation, the same thing with your archive link. I think it's time wasting.
    Scripts
Here are two scripts and when I remember right you wrote the first one by yourself, which is awesome! Great job on that! But as there are only two scripts I think this link is also there without any reason. Maybe you could have put the two scripts somewhere else and safe the space up there in your navigation.
    Links
Okay, just some links to sites you like/own are anything like that. So nothing really special.

    Overall
Well I think the last sentence above pretty much says everything about your site. I didn't have a look at your other sites that you have just at this one and I think i is nothing special. You maybe should add some more content to your site or anything like that. If I would have come to your site randomly I think I wouldn't even had taken the time to have a look aroung it. Sorry if that sounds a little bit hard to you, but I don't think you would bother to visit a site like that if you would have come randomly across it. So I think you really should take some time and work on your site and get more content up there.

To be honest, I'm not a very big fan of your layout. It looks like you're going for the minimalist (sp?) look, but it's a bit too boring? It could use more creativity. (: I'm not a very big fan of the link hovers either. They're kind of messy. I'm not a big fan of the drop shadow.

However, I really do love the shades of blue you chose!!

I also like how the texts and links are very easy to read. Most sites these days have texts that are impossible to read so yours is a plus. (:

Your blogs are also set up pretty weird. I would suggest underlining the title of the blog, to set it apart from the rest of the entry. I like how the date, comments, and tags are on the right, and then the blog is on the left, though. Very unique!

Your site has 2 scripts so there's not very much content to review. But I do applaud you on writing/cowriting your own scripts. I could never do that!

So overall, I think your site would be very helpful to people because it has scripts, and scripts are very hard to find. I would just suggest a new layout! (:

    Hey Amelie, it's TRACY from JEBELLE.NET :P

I'll start with the first impression: I'll be hones with you, I'm not a fan of your layout. I've liked previous designs better; they're all quite minimalistic, but were nicer.

I don't like how your site title is way on the left of my screen and the navigation way to the right. It looks fine in an 1024x768 & 1280x800 resolution, but with anything higher (or lower like 800x600) it looks a little odd.

I like how you can click your site title and it'll bring you to the main page.

The colors you used are nice and very soft. I like the contrast between you site title header and the background.

    DESIGN:
Your design looks a little "unfinished", maybe because it's so simplistic.
I think your site title needs more padding to the header bg. I would have centered it instead of placing it right on the border of the bg.
I like how your main area is divided - right side = blog entry, left side = metadata. I'd put the blog title over your actual blog entry though. When you have longer blog titles they do go over your blog area, but I'd make them start there, seeing a lot of them are pretty short.
The design of your navigation is probably the one thing of your site I don't like at all. Something just doesn't look right. It looks cut up - not the text, but the boxes and where they appear. It looks odd.
    I like your comments.

Your footer is nice and plain. I think a background color would look nice there.

I'm not going to review your content in detail, I like it (esp. your random facts). I noticed though that here for example http://not-noticeably.net/about/me/stats, your h2 "The stats bit" is nicely aligned with your bullet, the other h2s not so much.
A little more content (like Jem said - write articles) would be nice.

Here's a screenshot on how I tried to explain what I would change and how to. You know, my English isn't perfect, so.. .;)

    * * * 3 stars from me, due to the fact that you can do better ;)

    -------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey Amelie!! Here is my review for you! *rhyming*

    First Impression
My first impression was that your layout is really plain (I think that has been discussed by other reviewers, but I will have to admit that I haven't read theirs. Forgive me if I repeat things you already talked about with them!) but it's not bad at all. Kind of like, you know when you go to a site and you are just put-out by it? Your site doesn't do that to me. It's just a little too simple to please my design-loving self. :) So anywho, that was my real first impression.

    Coding:

You are successful with CSS 2.1 and XHTML 1.1! Woo! That's always good to see. Here recently, I have learned that only the people who really care about their coding will validate. Generally, these people have way better sites than the ones who do not. There is only one warning (2 technically, but they are for the same thing) but warnings aren't really that big of a deal anyway.

My HTML tidy checker also says you have a good, clean code. Your coding is also very lean, which is another good thing in my opinion. Takes virtually no time to load, another great thing.

All in all, your coding gets an 11/10 rating from me. ;) See what I did thar?

    Design

I know I already mentioned it but in case anyone forgot, Mimi loves to see awesome design. So your design is a little bit of a let-down, considering how AMAZING your coding is!

Your colors, however, work seamlessly together. I also admire that, as colors are a big deal to me. The only color-suggestion I have may be for your navigation. When you hover over a link, that extremely dark background color kind of sticks out a little too much. I like the concept of the darker background, but I would maybe make it a tad bit lighter. Perhaps a color more around #258684 and then since it's lighter, maybe make the text white on hover. I think that would look splendid! Sorry for the extremely specific hex code, sometimes I have trouble describing colors and I find that it's easier for me to just show others that are also web designers. We know what's up!

The "header" (I know it's not really a header but it's sort of like your header..!) seems to be a bit too low towards the drop shadow there. I think it would look lovely if you moved the Not-Noticeably.Net "header" (as I shall call it!) up about 25 pixels and it would look grand. I like how the header looks, though. Since your site is simple, the header brings a little spice to the layout. Not much, but it's not over-done or under-done.

Oh, I just noticed something else about the navigation. Sorry to dart back and forth! Anyway, I love love love how the navigation looks for the page you are on. Does that make sense? That is looks like it's an extension of the top part of the layout and the other links are in the background a bit? The thing I noticed was that when you hover over the link for the page you are on, it changes just like the other links. I think it would improve 100% if you could just make the color of the link change in that instance, instead of the whole background as well. If that still didn't make any sense (I have a tendency to ramble and no one knows what I am talking about...) and you are curious, please message me and I can try to find a different way to explain! :)

One more thing about the top and I will move down, I swear! :) The drop shadow is good, but I think it might look even better if it was either lighter or (personally, I prefer this one) if it was just a tad bit taller. You know, taller and have more of a fade from the dark gray to the white? Not a huge deal, though. I still think it looks nice this way, too.

OK, sheesh Mimi. I feel windy tonight! Something I can honestly say I did not notice at first were the post titles! I guess I am not used to seeing them on the left side, or maybe they are a bit too small. I guess I would say either make the size a bit bigger, to grab my attention (but not bigger than the header text, of course!) or maybe move it to the center? I really think it does look good over there, though. So maybe just make it bigger for silly, blind people like me? *bats lashes*

I like the line that divides your meta stuff (HA! I am so professional!) and your post contents a lot, that looks nice. :) I think if you just added a solid (but very light!) background color behind ALL of it it would help make the layout a little bit more interesting. I think with no distinction from the vast white background, it sort of makes your posts get swallowed in the white.

Maybe another suggestion to make it more interesting would be some sort of small icon or image you could put before the post name or somewhere off to the side there. Nothing really flashy, just maybe some shape that is special to you (that fits with the layout as well) in a solid color. I think that would look grand. :)

Ok so I have almost 1000 words and I haven't even gotten to the content. You poor dear, you are probably bored to tears by now! D: I'm sorry!!

OH MAN, one more navigation comment. I swear this is the last one, ha! I was wondering why the 'FAQ' link has a dotted underline but none of the rest of them do?

    Content:

Finally, Mimi gets to the content. -.-* Once again, I think I would like the titles to be a bit bigger, still didn't see it at first. I have crappy eyes.

Ohh, I like the pixel on the introduction page! That gives me an idea, it would be neat if you could make a small graphic like that for every page! Maybe not a different one for EACH page (I bet that would take a while, yikes) but one for the 'About' section, one for the 'Scripts' section, etc. It looks so nice there! Also, you are related to a famous person! COOL! I don't know if I am related to anyone famous, it would be really cool to know.

This is a little random but I think your li images are a little too fuzzy, just my opinion though.

Another random thing, I went to the remembrance site for your brother and it made me tear up. I really admire you making a site for him, it's so very sweet. He was such a handsome guy! I'm sure he appreciates his remembrance site. Very much. *hug*

Your contact page made me go from teary to laughing, I simply love the "Furthermore, I will not:" part. Have people actually asked you things like that? I wish you could slap people on the internet sometimes.

I like your tag page, I totally want to steal that idea... making a separate page for my tag cloud. Would you mind? May I? :D

The scripts you wrote on are both in use on my site, bravo! :) They are a god-send.

I see that your site is pretty much a blog site, so there isn't a whole lot of stuff to look at other than that. You are someone I know (slightly) and admire, so I read through your stuff. A lot of times if I don't know the person, I will not stay at a personal/blog site. I'm just like that I suppose.

    Final Thoughts

First of all, I must warn you that I am now stalking you on:
    - Flickr
    - Twitter
    - DeviantArt

Just a warning... ;) All in all I don't have many gripes. Just little things here and there really. Hope you didn't fall asleep reading all of this!

The reason I give 3/5 is simply because there isn't much for me to do (Selfish, gah!) and the design is a little boring. I shall be coming back to it!

I like the colours you have chosen for your layout, but I have to agree with pretty much everyone else in that the layout feels a bit lacking. The content width is a bit too wide, so perhaps bringing it down would help to tighten up your blog posts and make them look fuller.

About: When I first loaded the page I only looked at the middle of the screen and all I saw was links in lists. If I didn't look to the left I really wouldn't have known there was a distinction between the sets of links. I think this needs to be a little more defined, either by colour (background, border, etc) or spacing. I like your random facts page it is very full of information about you. :) Personally I like to see the Contact link offered as a part of the main navigation, not a link on a sub-page.

I like that you offer up a bit of your site history on the web even the screenshots of your first website. It is very cool that you can show how far you have grown since then. (I myself would be scarred to try and find a screenshot of my first site, it was horrendous!)

I think that it is pretty cool that you offer accessibility keys to those visitors who might require them. As well I like that even though this is personal site you give your visitors information about the information they transmit to your site, and how you use it. You never really think of that as a surfer of personal sites.

FAQ: Great that you are using your own Q&A script and offer it to visitors to download.

Tags: Random, but I love that Rambling and Geekiness are your biggest tags. :D

As a blogger and journaler, I am a little disappointed in the lack-luster blog entries. They are quick little updates that require little to no thought. Regarding the entry on the main page with a picture of the ocean, I would have appreciated more of a description of what was going on, why the photo was taken, and why it was important enough to be chosen as the picture that got posted on the blog when everything else was left in Flickr.

Although the design is clean and easy-to navigate, I with there was a little more to look at because it's awful plain. Plain & simple does not necessarily equal bad, but it would have been nice if there was a little more flair.

The content is also slightly lacking, with the only thing being offered is two scripts. Something I would like to suggest for the script page would be to leave a brief description of what each of the scripts do on the main page instead of the visitor having to visit each individual script page just to see what they do.

Although this is an overall good website, it's not great. I think my biggest disappointment is the lack of reading material (blog entries, articles, thoughts and opinions, et certea). I think if the author took the time to write some information about things she knows about it would compel me to change my rating from a three star rating to a four star rating. And all it would take would be a couple of extra pages.

I suggest writing about your endeavors with scripts, how you learned how you learned to write them, and so on. A page with some links to where you learned how to write scripts and brief reviews of the websites, etc. are just a few suggestions of what you can write about.

While this is certainly neat and organized, it is no where near interesting to look at. If you're going to go with the "less is more" approach, you're going to have to make more of an effort in making your site eye-catching. There's way too much white and very little of anything else. I also think you should put more padding on the sides. On my 1440x990 screen resolution, you can fit your last blog entry on less than two full lines. It looks pretty ridiculous. Aside from that, I don't have much else to say. I just think you should add more color to your site to give it more substance.

    LAYOUT/DESIGN:
I actually like the clean and minimalistic look of your layout. The teals/blues look good with the white and although I'm not a huge fan of the font you chose for your title at the top, the gradient stripes finish off the whole look with a subtle touch.

    ORGANIZATION:
I like the way you organize your content and your pages. The one thing I would change is that under the "Basic information and design archive" subpages, I would align the content as you did with the rest of your pages because it takes up the entire width of your page while the rest of your pages have some negative space on the left for sub headers.

I think you could make this layout work better if you thought out the smaller details a bit further... most people make the mistake of working so hard on the structure, but then skimp completely on the little things, like link styles, lists, and most importantly structure. Your current structure for blog entries when you're viewing one with comments is a bit all over the place. I don't want to tell you how to structure your site, but I do suggest sitting down with a pen and paper and really considering it, then drawing it out. If you actually did put forth a lot of thought on your blog entry layout... then... may I kindly suggest you think about it again? Because I think it could be much more aesthetic if you changed some of the font sizes, made the comment box not-so-large and move it to the size, etc.

I don't think the shadow is blended "down" enough, and I think it's too dark to suit the layout. I think the darkest grey needs to be lightened up a few shades. But personally, I recommend doing away with it; I would put a dark teal bar (with a gradient) under the header for the navigation, and then doing something interesting for your hover styles.

I kind of hate monochromatic layouts. It's not really a design faux pas, but I feel like your site could do with some contrast. It's very blah as far as color scheme goes.

Amelie, you've been around forever, and it shows in your content. Your personality practically shines through, and I know for a fact your code is pretty much gorgeous. I don't like how overly-organized your FAQ section seems, but I guess it makes sense because you get a lot of questions. I guess my suggestion is to refer back to what I said about your blog entry layout. I just feel like the super-bolded text draws my eyes away from the parts you want me to read, and it's too spread out.

I feel like you're more original than this layout. Like I said, your presence has been around the internet for a while now. The design looks like someone's first attempt at not using celebrity blends and trying to mesh into higher-scale personal web design. I think you can do better. I'm pretty much positive.

PS, can I suggest using a different pattern than chunky diagonals? I think they're overused, and you can pick a much more original pattern that's more reflective of who you are.

Okay, so I said something stupid. When I said: "...most people make the mistake of working so hard on the structure, but then skimp completely on the little things, like link styles, lists, and most importantly structure,"

I meant: "...most people make the mistake of working so hard on the DESIGN STRUCTURE, but then skimp completely on the little things, like link styles, lists, and most importantly TEXT STRUCTURE."

Meaning, people are more concerned about the boundaries of header, footer, background, content than the structure of the text within the content area.

And when talking about comment box, that was supposed to be "move it to the SIDE."

Sorry for being dumb. I should proofread beforehand, yeah?

This is certainly not my favourite layout. I think it is lovely, but rather plain. And *you* are lovely, but *not* plain. :P

I find that the drop shadow is too dark which makes it unnecessarily sharp, and too much of a contrast from the light, airy blue. And, as has been said a lot, the link hovers are far too harsh. They almost seem like a mistake. Maybe, if you softened the drop shadow to a lighter grey, you could make the hovers match the grey colour? In any case, it needs to become much more subtle! Also, condensing the actual content area would be nice. All of your entries seem to be only one or two lines long! Usually I am a fan of space, but this might be just a *bit* too much space! :P

Your content is incredibly well organized, which is not surprising-- I don't know you very well, but something about your personality points to you being incredibly organized! Your FAQs page is beyond organized! Normally I just see loads of questions and answers strewn around without a second glance, but yours are so *orderly!* Kudos!! You seem to have every last thing covered.

Guestblock.com doesn't exist any more, so you may want to ditch that link from your credits page.

Overall, a very pleasant viewing experience! A few things are needed to tighten it up and tie it all together, but generally lovely. :)

Not-Noticeably.net is very clean, simple, and organized.

I'm going to make a somewhat radical layout suggestion: play around with making the layout 700-ish pixels wide, centered, with the nav items spaced evenly across the width. I think it would end up being very stylish.

The blog entries are pretty short, which is why I feel a narrower layout would suit the content better - it would fill the layout out more.

Nav hover states are jarring - I think making them identical, or nearly identical to the on-states (with perhaps a contrast change or color shift) would suit the layout a lot better. The dark color seems out of place.

Content, coding and originality are all just fine. I like the emphasis on accessibility, as not a ton of people do that even though it should be important. There's really not a lot to complain about on this site, but I think experimenting with the layout might give some added "spice" to Not-Noticeably.net.

    Amelie's Response:

The reason I made it full(ish) width was because all my previous layouts were around 700px/centered and I tried to do something different... Didn't really work out though :P

Thanks for the suggestions about the links, it has been said before and I keep meaning to find a better colour but haven't got round to it yet. I also need to change the dropshadow a bit and move the title up. Will do when I get a chance. Honest!
