Atomterrible gave it

on 26th May 2010 and said:My first impression is that of the clean color scheme. The hues are not blazing, and while the template is colorful, the brightest colors are quite subdued.
Layout
It is retrospective in design, which goes well to remind one of the glory days of the silver screen (which ironically were in the Hays Code era and ended with the rating system introduced by the MPAA.) Blah, blah, moving forward...The navigational bar is wonderfully small in terms of the number of links. The site is not large, and I appreciate the links reflecting this. I love how the current page's link "tab" changes color and pops up. It is well designed and leaves no question as to where a browser is.
The logotype "Rated" at the top has some swirly growth on it like in a Windows operating system advertisement. I am not feeling that connection here. It does not make complete topical sense since the MPAA rating theme is more of a serious or professional tone. However, it looks nice, though if you want to stick with that look, I would go further and stop just before one would call it overboard or tasteless.
Content
You have done well in sticking to a singular goal and provide only that which is necessary. However, I would like to see a more thorough list of why a site would be rated "PG," et cetera. If you are going to do something, you might as well go all out. Could you perhaps find the real rating guidelines and use those in determining site ratings? Perhaps even list them if they are available.Purpose
This is an interesting idea, but I do not envision this taking a strong hold on the Web. What would the practical purpose be? If there are none, I am yet satisfied with it being a fun additive to a site. There is plenty of room on the Web for fun things.Text
Everything is A-OK regarding use of the english language. However, as you grow in users, you may want to move away from using first person grammar. If you desire to keep a smaller user base or network, this works well regardless.Originality
I see it was not your idea, but that has no bearing. I merely mention this to say that you have no legal obligation to give credit to the originator unless that was part of the transfer agreement. :) (I am an advocate of minimal branding.)Activity
Small beginnings can lead to great successes. Conclusion
It was very easy to look at everything there is to see. That is saying a whole heap of a lot with the Web nowadays. (Think www.panasonic.com!) I appreciate this more than anything else about the site — it is up front. Overall, the only things I dislike are purely opinion and do not break any absolute (or even perceived) rules of taste, design, or execution whatsoever. Well done!Suggested Changes
1) The logotype needs to be either more serious or more plant-looking in my opinion.
2) List (or at least use) the actual, current guidelines for ratings since the MPAA system is the inspiration.
3) Think of any possible revenue that could be gained through the site and incorporate that idea.
4) You may not want to keep first person language if you eventually acquire hundreds or thousands of users.
5) Remove the name of the person who originated the idea (unless this would cause anxiety or a strained relationship of course).Using MSIE on Windows | Report This?
Mimi's Response:
Hey there, thanks for the review! :) As is my custom, I like to reply to things that were addressed in a listed order.
1) I agree with the title, I didn't really think about that at the time. To be honest in the beginning it was this drastic and ornate thing, but it reminded me of a teenybopper site and I kept stripping it until it got to where you see it now. I see no problems removing it, as there wasn't an actual point to them being there anyway other than to decorate the font a bit. I will try it without the swirlies and if it looks just as well, I might just leave them off. :)
2) As for the actual guidelines there are a couple of reasons why I didn't adhere strictly to those already set. The first was just that they are so long and detailed, I know it would take up half of the page and I could essentially abbreviate it while getting mostly the same results.
The second reason was because I am having them rate their websites, not an actual movie. Naturally there will be some difference between the two and so I thought it better to edit it to gear it more towards a simple and fun little idea, rather than make it complicated.
3) The purpose is just as you stated in the end, just a fun and meaningless little site. :) I don't see it being a major part of the web either, just a fun idea.
4) I don't actually see it becoming too very large, but I agree with the fact that if it does I should switch the style up, as them there rappers say. haha
5) This is true that I have no obligation to Sarah, I just simply put that up there for polite reasons. Once I have it a bit longer I will most likely remove that, as she doesn't respond to me anymore anyway. The last I heard from her was almost a year ago.
6) As for revenue, I used to use Google ads and actually made a few hundred dollars off of them but I just dislike the display of advertisements so much that I sort of moved off from it. That being said I would rather like to have a few hundred more, who wouldn't?
Thank you so much for your review, it was insightful and I appreciate the frankness of it. :)
