on 22nd Dec 2008 and said:You know I love your site, but there are a few things I think you could edit to make it the best it can be!
Firstly, I love the layout, but the background is a bit blurry. I don't know if this is something to do with this crappy computer screen, or the quality of the background. The colours all compliment eachother well, now I fixed the colours on my PC screen. Before they looked dodgy, but that's not your fault. I adore your CSS. The font size is big and easy to read, which I love because my eye sight is pretty crap and I don't feel like wearing my contact lenses all the time. The footer is eye-catching, and I love the fact that you've done something a little different with it. Make sure you get that Twitter plugin fixed soon!
Moving onto your pages...
I'm not going to review every single page of your website, but I noticed one problem on your about page. At the bottom you have said:
"All in all, I'm pretty awesome. No, really. (Want to know more? Look over to the left at the sidebar!)"
Well, you have no sidebar so I can't look over to the left. :)I love your CSS template, it's so cute. I've used it before and I will use it again if I ever run out of ideas and get bored of my rubbish design skills.
The script is a fabulous idea, I wish I had the talent to write one, even if it is a very simple script. I will not even attempt to write one because I'll be constantly asking for help from every poor sod on the internet.
Web hosting reviews are also a good idea. Many people struggle to find a decent host that will not rip them off, so hopefully these will come in handy for somebody.
Your grammar, spelling and everything is fantastic so I don't need to say anything about that.
Overall you know I love your website. It is definitely one of my favourite websites on the internet, so well done. I don't really have anything negative to say, but I really have told the truth in this quick review-thingy. Go Geekish!

First impression: Not impressed. Bored actually. The huge text that describes you is weird because unless that’s the title, I don’t think it should be that huge.
I mean you have nothing to draw me in, excite me. You have a white box over a background. You color scheme is as dead as the layout it self.Blog: I don’t normally critique blogs b/c they’re just people’s lives but I found yours a bit weird. What is Queen Bee. I know I could click on the link but it’s in your blog. Just giving a tiny summary could entice me more to visit.
Geek: Nice, organized. I like how you listed your political affiliation. It really shows who a person is.
Goodies>>website templates: develop this section b/c your first one is good. Why didn’t you use that for yourself. It looks a lot better (although still plain) than your layout.
>>quote managing script: this is interesting. Develop this section. This is a perfect way for you to be known by writing your own scripts.
>>review: this is okay to have. No comment on it really
>>hosting review:people would love this. I hear too many stories of bad hosting so for people to read that before they invest, that would awesome. Good job.Domain: nice, organized
Links: ditto. Humor is the first thing I see. Nice :D lol. Ahhh inspiration. Glad you listed those. It could help inspire someone else.
Ask: Really don’t have a comment on it
Overall: You site’s not bad but the layout is the first impression of everything. I didn’t expect your site to be as good as it was mainly b/c the layout was so boring. im giving you four stars b/c your content if developed could make you a star :D. the web designing world is always looking for new scripts to set their sites apart. :D so 4 stars for innovation so to speak

on 30th Nov 2008 and said:Hi Hannah! I hope that this review will be of good use and encouragement to you ;)
First impression: Wow, colourful! And it's not too glaring too - I must say that you've done a great job when it comes to selecting the colours for your website. It's not easy to come up with a set of colours that can go so well with each other and yet not distract your readers from the real gem - the content of your blog.
Layout: Yes, the lovely centered, two column layout! It's well balanced, with the sidebar more than half as narrow as the content container (some blogs have really wide sidebars and it kind of distracts me from the content, so it's a big no-no, but you've avoided that). The header looks a little plain without graphics (it's plaint text) - having a fancier header will make your layout look nicer since it complements with the pastel coloured theme of your layout.
However, just like what Anna has pointed out, the scrolling background makes me a little woozy :P striped and patterned backgrounds are usually best kept fixed relative to the browser viewing area rather than onto the page itself since their repeating patterns can be disorienting. Unless the patterns are subtle and muted, it's better to fix this background thing.
Typography: The first thing I noticed is that you have a preferrence for large fonts as well as high line-spacing (as evident from the spacing between adjacent lines in the paragraph) - a very good combination. The general rule of thumb is that large fonts go with large spacing and vice versa. There is sufficient contrast between the white background and the grey coloured text, and I have no problem reading every single words. However, you might want to pay a little more attention to the image spacing around the images. Take for example, the photo of the dSLR in the recent post, I noticed that there is little spacing around the image, especially the vertical spacing. I see that you have 20px for the horizontal margin but only 5px for the vertical margin - it will be better if you can bump the vertical spacing a little more. I understand that due to the constraints of line-height, when you increase it beyond fine it will displace the line beneath it, creating an unnecessary spacing. But it's always better to avoid narrow spacing :)
The colours of the links beneath the header is a little too dark - they're pitch black and bolded at the same time. Do take note that if both sample text have the same colour but one is bolded while the other is not, the bolded one will appear darker and it can be a little distracting, especially hen your header text and your post titles are black as well. If you change the colour of the link text for the metadata, to say #525252, it actually looks great (I'm using Firebug on Firefox to try different colours, heh!). It seems that you have made to distinciton between the header links, the post title links and other links on the page. It's better to be more specific for the selectors so that you can specify a range of colours to the links that are in different sections of the page.
Colour scheme: I'm not too sure whether is it pastel colours exactly because what I have in mind is that pastel colours have a lighter hue and weaker saturation... but it looks fine to me, and it's definitely not a cause for concern.
Validation: Although you did not mention it on your blog, your layout is both XHTML 1.0 Transitional and CSS 2.1 valid - you should place the successful validation results somewhere near your footer :) it's something that you're gonna be proud of for investing so much effort in your layout to get things right.
Content: I realised that while accessing the About page, you have actually four more subpages to it - it is better if you can display the links in the home page or simply combine them into the same page but have different headers to them (compartmentalisation of content). The information flow is kind of broken as the visitor will be stumped with four more extra links to follow.
Thanks for sharing us so much wonderful things in the goodies section - from php script to reviews, you have it all! I read that you're very good at coding so I'm wondering if you're accepting tutorial requests from your visitors. I think that if you have time for that, it will be really great because that will keep returning visitors to your blog and that sharing is nothing but good ;) but if you have real life commitment then it'll be inconvenient for you to write all the time. I read a little deeper, especially the part about the Web Host Reviews. Thanks for sharing! They're very comprehensive and you're very detailed to their services and what made you switch host. So far I've been sticking to a local host for years and they're so far so good, I hope they don't oversell the too.
Extras: There seems to be a lack of a Contact page where people can reach out to your privately. For the moment being, visitors will have to go by leaving a comment on your posts. Such comments will distract other readers as they are less relevant to the particular post in question, so you might want to create a contact page with a contact form to facilitate communication that are un-related to your blog entries. I guess that you might want visitors to contact you through the 'Ask a Question' feauture, and a good thing is that you can always combine it with the comment form.
Summary: I really like your design - the colours, layout and typoraphy. Your have really rich contents and interesting reads, but you might want to make the page link less deep (for example, the about page). Overall speaking, your blog is already very nice now - a few tweaks will make it perfect! Good luc

on 20th Nov 2008 and said:Layout - I smiled when I was welcomed by warm pastel colours which compliment themselves. The layout is simple, which can go either way and yours has gone the right way! In this case simple is best, your layout is nice to look at. The positioning of everything is fine although i think a header which stretches across the container would be better as the 'Geekish' almost gets lost in the navigation. Also the text in the footer i think would look better centered.
Text/Font - The main paragraph text is perfect, perfect size which makes reading effortless and the grey against those pastel colours works fantastic on the white. However i feel the main header text is too big, almost feels like its attacking me! Having 'Geekish' in that large font is fine as it's the name of your site but the navigation is a little too much for me.
Geek - Nice basic facts which are interesting, not the same stuff you read everywhere! Infact its quite scary how much we are alike!
Goodies - Great goodies, was dissappointed that there weren't more but as the blog is the main focus of the site thats fine! The website template is great, i would consider downloading it myself.
Domain - Again relevant information which doesn't send you to sleep!
Links - As far as appearance is concerned i think that the links for your blogroll would look better in lists withouth the background.
Blog - Your latest blog stated that you've added a new section called 'Suggestions' - shouldnt this be in the navigation? From what I can see your blogs are quite short and sweet which is again can work both ways. People are more inclined to read a blog if it is short but then you have to make sure the content is different to what anyone has read before.
Overall - A nice little blog site - would be great to see more goodies added in the future!

I'll think about the header thing.
I don't think I'll center the footer text. Everything is aligned to the right, and it would look out of place if I centered it.

I'm working on more goodies. ;)
I have the suggestions section linked from the content section, but I've been meaning to put it in the navigation for the domain and goodies sections. It's just a matter of time and motivation to do it (and when I remember to do it...).Thanks for the review! :3

on 19th Nov 2008 and said:Your site is just lovely.
The colors are all terrifically harmonious, you have a wonderful grasp of padding (this wins huge points with me. ask anyone. I am always harping about padding) and everything is very consistent.
Your favicon is particularly cute - I like that it's transparent so you can see the halo on the g but there's no annoying box. Nice work!
The hover states you've used on your links is pretty subtle, which I like. They strike a great balance between "invisible" and "surprising." Just read your site info and I remember you from creativeburst.org! I had no idea that you were the same person - you have come SUCH a long way. Seriously.
The icons for external links are gloriously tasteful - they fit in and indicate their thing without feeling in the way or obvious. LOVE that.
The website template you provide is nice; I think it could use some left-right padding (I ALWAYS SAY THIS. I know.) but overall it's of good quality. I really appreciate this since many people distribute crap. I'm not going to fully review that layout unless you specify you want me to, but I do have some suggestions for it if you're interested.
I feel like your comment form's textarea is squinchy. That might be me since I prefer a larger box to type in, but you might consider extending it out so it lines up with the end of your smilies row. Or you might try bringing the smilies in a bit but still make the textarea line up with it. Also, the XHTML tag notice feels large. I know your text is primarily on the larger end, but this feels like it's yelling at me and the rest of it doesn't.
Your site validates as Transitional, which is great. I'm willing to bet you could do Strict pretty easily (it's not as scary as it sounds, I promise) and I think it would add a squidgen more impressiveness to your site. Or maybe it is just me that gets impressed with Doctypes.
You totally nailed it with this layout. Seriously. I am really trying to find something more constructive to say about it but honestly? I love the large fonts, I love the warm, soft colors, you appreciate padding, and I don't really have anything further to say.

Hannah's Response:
I looove padding. I got a negative comment on the padding in an earlier review, but the reviewer's website has like none, so... :|
Ooh my favicon is leftover from a layout I made which actually used that font in that color. But I'll keep it.
Hmm, yeah, looks like my template could use more padding :B If you have more suggestions, go for it! I'd like to hear them.
I had the smilies in line with the textarea at one point but that line must have gotten deleted from my CSS. I'll fix it.
Wait what? My doctype should be strict. I'll change that. Thanks so much for the review!

I like how you used big fonts for everything. It makes everything so much easier!
However, I don't like the underline on the blog title whenever my mouse hovers on it. I think that the change of shade is enough for users to realize that it is a link.
I enjoyed reading your About page. It really shows a clear idea of who you are, even though it is just short. Clem has already pointed out the only error I see on this page.
I think that a comment form is unnecessary on some of the pages under Goodies.
I like the free template you offer, by the way. However, that's style is commonly used nowadays. I think that you should create more to show diversity and option.
Your Links page looks very organized and I love the way you styled it! I also love the fact that you link to me. LOL

on 16th Nov 2008 and said:Hi, Hannah! I'm going to review your site, again, because it seems like you're always changing and tweaking and because I'm not in the let's-review-a-crap-site state of mind. So bear with me as I give you almost no advice!
Your theme is simple but not plain, which is obviously a good thing. I'm not usually a fan of pastel colours, but having a pastel rainbow is a different story.
I really love the positioning of your site's name - it's not often that it's put in the sidebar like you've done.
I really like the hover on the sidebar links, but I think that the links in your main text could be a little bit more interesting. They're just... black. With a black underline. They aren't hideous, just a little bit boring.
I also don't love the yellow post meta data underneath the pink post title. It looks a little off to me. I don't really like those two colours together.
Your footer could be a bit more interesting, too. It's functional, but it's just white and black. You have a very nice Flickr account - why not add your photos to the footer or something like that? Anything to spice it up a bit!
GEEK
"Introductions suck. I can't write a positive about-me page without feeling self-centered and geeky. I'll try my best, but really, the best way to get to know me is to talk to me!" I can't tell you how much I hate it when people start their about pages like this. It's become such a cliche that it makes me want to cry whenever I read it. If you got rid of it, I would be much happier! When you start your page off like this, it seems like you're second-guessing your writing abilities, and sets the reader up to think that your page is going to suck."Politically?: Liberal Democrat, pro-choice, pro-marriage-rights-for-all-humans, pro-getting-the-hell-out-of-Iraq, pro-gun control, global warming IS real, anti-capital punishment, etc., etc." I love this. I totally agree with it all, obviously. I would get rid of either the question mark or the colon after "Politically", though!
"All in all, I'm pretty awesome. No, really." I think I've commented on this before, but in case I haven't: I love it! It makes me giggle. In a good way.
The other pages in this section are just as well-done, so I won't bore you with my comments. Especially since I've reviewed your site before, haha. (And o hai, I can do the clover thing with my tongue too!)
GOODIES

I'm not going to read the whole requested review, but it looks like you've gone in-depth and taken the time and care to write a really comprehensive review. (And I love your code tags; they look so pretty!) Your Web Host Reviews were also very helpful and it was a good article overall, so thanks for writing it. :)DOMAIN
Mkay, I've reviewed this before. It's a Domain page. No issues. The end.LINKS
It's a link page. No issues. The end. :P Actually, I think this looks really nice with the big blocky links. I usually hate it when people just list links in one big paragraph, but the styling of your links helps separate them.Well, Hannah, you know that I like your site. And you know that I'm writing this review because I like to procrastinate. I've decided to give you 4 stars. I know that seems like the rating went down since my last review, but I would like to see a bit more in the way of visitor content from you, specifically website templates. I wish I could give you 4.5, but since I can't, I decided to round it down, because giving you a 5 would imply that there's no room for improvement. (Please pretend that made sense!)

I love the simplicity and the (almost) imagelessness of this design. And the rainbows! The pastels are all very nice. My only complaint is the lack of contrast. The black text helps, but it could use a bit more.
I'm a big fan of giant text, so I definitely am enjoying that aspect of your design!
Your About page is well written and you come off as a highly intelligent girl. I lol'd at your political paragraph. I like how I can Ask a Question on any page! That's handy for the whole site, really, instead of just getting personal questions. Your content page is extensive, and really gives visitors loads of ways to get to know you better.
Your goodies are probably some of the best I've seen thus far. I would love to see more templates from you, because your designs are always some of my favourites out there!
Your site section is... well, one thing I've found by doing zillions of reviews lately is that most site sections are the same. You at least got me to giggle over the story of your search for geekish.nu. It IS a great story. I can't believe nobody else had registered it! That's crazy! It seems like one of those that would have been snapped up straight away!
Your link section is very nicely organized. All the names with their backgrounds like that remind me of those little poetry magnets. :D
Overall, your site is incredibly pleasant. I don't think there is much to improve on, except that I would love to see you expand on your goodies section. More templates, more reviews and writing etc. You have a very nice writing style. Your review is very in-depth, and look very helpful to the owner, and to just the average reader who may recognize something from their own site in the reviewee's site.

I will say that I was like "should I even review this site? But then I figured, what the hell?" I am an occasional visitor of your site, and I've always been since you had CreativeBurst.org. So I know that you come out with simplistic, yet gorgeous layouts. This is no exception. I think I love this one more than the others I've seen before. My reason: pastel colors. Shallow, I know. But what makes it appealing is that there are 5 colors, and none are more overpowering than the next, which is a big problem that a lot of rainbow-esque layouts have.Blog and Sidebar
I can't help but to think if the blog text can be a little darker. It's fine either way. The text is large enough, and the line-height is great. So even if the text was a smidge darker, it wouldn't matter, because it's still readable either way.
Short and sweet sidebar. Nice!
The other pages
Geek: Eleven pets, ye gods! Anyway, a lot of people say that they hate writing their about me page or they can't write one without sounding arrogant, myself included. However, some of those who say it write it perfectly well. You included. I almost overlooked the subpages about you though, even though they were right smack in my face. Oops. But yeah, I love your pet page. But once again, eleven pets, ye gods!
Goodies: A small, but constantly developing page. Hopefully more people submit for a review at your site. Nice web host reviews. I have heard great stuff about dreamhost, but I guess it was a crock. Oh, I hope to see more website templates!
Domain: Short and sweet. That's pretty much it.
All in all...
You have pulled off a layout that a lot of people fail at. I'm jealous at that! But really, you have an almost flawless (just more stuff in the goodies) site here. But either way, you still deserve the rating. Good job.

on 15th Nov 2008 and said:Layout: Colorful and quirky! It's a very nice play on a rainbow theme. The colors go well together. I think the reason that this layout works is because the colors are such soft shades. If they were bright colors it would definitely be too "in your face" or "trying too hard to work." Your background scrolls though. It's just always been a personal opinion with rainbow-ish backgrounds that it works better without scrolling. It distracts from the content to watch is scroll.
Text: Your text size is large enough for reading clearly and easily. Arial was a good choice. The colors can be seen easily throughout the layout. The use of black for your links probably only works because it's bold. It otherwise would probably be difficult to tell it as a link. I'm glad to see you have an out-link that lets users know when they go off-site. It's a personal pet peeve of mine to be browsing a site, enjoying it, click a link, and be taking away without knowing it. It's a simple fix with a back-link, but still...
Navigation: Your navigation throughout the site is straight-forward and consistent. However, your background colors were the only way I could tell a heading from a sub-navigation link without roll-over. The font size is very close to being the same size. While it doesn't take a genius to figure it out, let's face the fact that a lot of people surfing the web are not geniuses. Is there any way you can decrease the font size slightly or add more padding to the left to make it look more like a sub-navigational menu?
I like how you've capitalized the heading but left the sub-nav links lowercase. That's an interesting detail.Geek: Your introduction to yourself was well-written. You summed up in a nutshell what anyone may want to know about you at a quick glance.
Ask a question: Typical of these type pages. I'm glad to see you gave visible proper credit to Jem. :)
Find Me Elsewhere: Also typical. I like how you've separately linked your profile.
My Pets: I LOVE this page. I always enjoy seeing and hearing about people's pets. I think they should be mentioned in personal pages more often because they do become so much a part of a family. I'm glad to see that your didn't leave them out. They're all so cute.
I'm also glad to see that you put a last modified date at the bottom and that it has been recently modified.Random Facts: "My favorite color is #66eeee." I like how you change the background to show the color, but the white text is way too bright a text color to be on that bright a color. (It is a pretty color.) You might want to consider changing the text color to something not as bright or light as white.
"My second tow is longer than my 'big toe' " Tow should be toe. The e and the w are close on the keyboard - but you can see that for yourself. I make those kind of mistakes all the time. :)Goodies:
Website Templates: Simple, but cute website template.PHP Scripts - Quotish - "When all steps are completed." I think the past tense of the word works better here.
Requested Review: I'm glad you included a screen shot. I always hate seeing a review without a screen shot. Layouts change, but the review doesn't. It sucks to read a review, visit the site, and have no idea where the review was coming from. You have a lengthy and in-depth review.
Hosting Reviews: It's not often that you see something like this on personal sites. It's great to give people an inside look at different hosting companies. Have you considered a short-handed version for someone just scanning through - kind of like the star system you see on review-sites. It would give a visitor the opportunity to go "Oh she gave Holdfire five stars. I should read this." Instead of reading all the information on the page to find out you enjoy Holdfire the most. Visitors are lazy creatures or at least, when I'm not reviewing, I am.
Domain: I just realized that when you bold text, the color can be very similar to the bold black you use for links. There is a slight color difference, but I have good vision. Anyone with poor vision and difficulty with contrast may consider that a link and roll over it to click it. (Okay, I'll admit I did that, but I can see the slight color difference after the fact. :P)
This section is very typical for domains.Links: I like how you've done your links with the background color. It keeps it from being boring and these sections (while serving their purpose) can get boring. I know you have your Q*Bee Bee at the bottom of your page in the footer. Have you considered putting a link to your quilt in the links section. A lot of people who are just starting out or who have never heard of the Q*Bee may not know the bee is a link to your quilt. Just a thought.
Other: Your XHTML validates without problem (which doesn't surprise me.) I can't check your CSS. The validator keeps returning an I/O Stream Closed Error every time I try. :(
I'm not going to go too much into coding because you know as much, if not more, about it than I probably do.I like that you use such a readable and large font for your comment area. It's nice to be able to clearly read what I'm writing.
Overall: I really enjoyed your site Hannah. The color-scheme is interesting and the text is readable. There were a few grammatical errors that should be corrected but over-all the writing was very easy to follow.
You have an easy to read writing style.
My main suggestions would be to fix the background so it doesn't scroll and make people dizzy and to make the sub-navigation more sub-navigational menu-ish.
I enjoyed your site.

Hannah's Response:
I'll definitely change the background to fixed.
I'll play around with the navigation and subnavigations and see what I can come up with to differentiate between the two.
The toe typo has been pointed out too many times... time to fix it!
I like your idea of a summary for the hosting reviews; I think I'll add that on the main goodies page. Thanks much for the review!
