on 8th Sep 2009 and said:This is only my opnion, you don't need to change anything that i suggest or take any advice. I will be reviewing your website through Mozilla Firefox.
THE NAME:
Retro-freak is very original. It's also very easy for people to remember. This is a good aspect that will get more visitors to come to your website.LAYOUT/DESIGN/COLOURS:
I love simple layouts, so you're doing a good job here. The CSS goes very well, and it's not to busy. It's also very pleasing to the eyes. I like the shade of blue that is used, very nice. Your side bar isn't full of random stuff, it looks nice.RESOURCES:
As I can tell, you have a lot to offer, now let's get into further detail.Brushes and Stamps - I really like how organized this page is. You have a lot of variety here to offer as well which is always nice. I think the celled listings for PSP, PS, and image page is a bit much. Maybe you should just add simple text links, it would look more nice and take up less space.
Fonts - It's nice that you are offering different fonts for people to download, although I'm sure none of them were made by you. Maybe you should add a credit link to this page so people won't consider you a stealer - I'[m not saying you are, but there are people out there who would think this.
Smilies - I like the amount of smilies you offer here, although, they are all the same - just different colour. You have great potential here. I think you should add different designs here :)
Stocks - there's not much here, but from what there is, people could really get some use out of these.
Patterns - you have a lot here as well, I like that. I especially like the first group that you have to offer. Maybe you could make more such as that type?
Icon textures / textures - I really like these, especially the bigger sized textures. people could really use these to spice up their layouts. I myself may use a couple in the future :)
Pixel Text - I'm sure these were great, but at the moment they are all photo bucket images except for a few of them that say "new". Maybe you could fix them?
Button Bases - I think the first group of button bases are useless. They are more like textures and I don't think many people would be using them. I really like the first row of the second group. People could use those for sure.
Free hosters / Free programs - This is very nice of you to add to your website. There are a lot of people out there looking for free downloadable programs they can use. Also the hosts are great
Wallpapers - these are AMAZING, good job on them! I think that you could maybe make the image smaller on the main page just so it doesn't look unorganized - dont get me wrong, it looks organized, just that they are a little big,
Tutorials - I think your graphic tutorials are great. People could really use these. I myself have found a few new things i could use to help me with different things, thanks :D
CSS etc - I really like the amount of tutorials you have here. I noticed that you have a lot of *'s used in codes. You don't need to use them, but you do need to use a few codes so it doesn't show up on your page - you offer the code. What I mean is, you have [code][/code], instead you can have it look like <li> by using & lt ; li & gt ; without the spaces. You'll end up with them <li> look :)
Myspace - I like this section, although I don't use myspace very much. It would come very handy to someone who does. I think you should add a little more variety to your image captions because their all pretty much the same. Just my thought :) Your layouts are useable, which is good :)
Portfolio - I really like this section. Like stated before in another section, i think you should make the images smaller on the main page, and stil be clickable so they become their full size.
OVER ALL:
Your website has great potential here. There are a few small things that can be changed as I mentioned , but also you don't need to make the changes if you don't want to :)Using Firefox on Windows | Report This?

I like your layout a lot. It's simple, but I like it, especially the font you used at the top. But you should make the title of your site more visible though. The first thing I notice when I enter your site is the navigation rather than the site's name.
Your text could use some more color, though. Maybe make the bold another color rather than black, so it doesn't look as plain. It would also look better without the blend there, but it looks fine either way.
Also, with the 2 navigations (one on top and the other on the sidebar) it's kind of confusing to find where things are.
At the top, where it has the 2 buttons, I think you should separate your link-back button & your vote button. It's confusing if they're both next to each other, since they both look very much alike. Maybe consider using titles instead of just putting 2 buttons on your page. Some people may not even know why they are there.Content:
I liked your brushes!
I think you should either use page anchors, or split your PNG's into different pages based on category, so the visitor doesn't have to scroll through the PSD's to find what they want.
For your blends, try not to go overboard with the textures. I think erasing some of the texture over the celebrity's face is a good idea and balances it out more.About Me:
A bit lengthy. Usually just a few brief paragraphs with some basic information is just fine.Overall, your site is pretty good. You have good content (especially the tutorials, they're very helpful) so keep up the good work :D

on 19th Nov 2008 and said:Celebrity image alert. I'd recommend not using those because it is illegal (I'm trying to back down from the hype myself). If I were to ignore that, though, I'd say your layout is good but the images are a bit awkward. I like that the layout is skinny. The text is in the right size and it's the right color. I like the colors in general, they are easy on the eyes. Good job! I love the header font, it's nice.
Downloads- The brushes are nice, the only one I really liked was the first one only because you never see much of those kinds of brushes while stokes and brushes like the rest are commonly seen. I personally would like to know the name of the fonts just in case but this page's fine. The programs are useful and I liked that you did previews. The icon textures look nice but I don't like the previews. They are too crowded and have much going on. The smilies are nice but go ahead and try different styles! The stocks are nice, nothing wrong there. Nothing wrong with the Patterns. Celeb images alarm! PNGs with celebrity images are illegal (sorry to burst your bubble, mine was burst too thanks to this nifty fact). The avatars are actually really nice. It's the only thing I don't ask credit for in my site due to celebrity images and I see that you aren't either which I applaud. Ugh, the blends take too much to load for some reason. They are really nice (except for the fact that I won't tell you again :D). I find it really dumb if a person has a site but can't do a button. The light ones are really nice. The random ones are nice, too. The favicons are...okay? I mean, it doesn't have to do with you but they're really plain. A couple of pixell-y ones would be great (apart from the ones you already have). I love the textures! They are incredible. Pixel text is handy but try doing animated ones too. The premade layouts are fine, I'd just pass this, really. Your layouts are great.
Tutorials- These are fine. I won't go into much detail as I have to go to volleyball but you have great variety. I, you, would watch my grammar a bit. Nothing to be ashamed of, though, I also commit grammar crimes. The PSP tutorial menu goes out of your divs. It looks messy, fix this please.
Myspace- I don't really like the contact buttons, either because they look weird or because they look very pixelly (the border). The layout section previews go out of the Divs, please fix this. All the rest is fine
Overall, the site is really nice. Sorry I didn't do much detail, I had to go to volleyball but it really is good. I think you have the creativity to do non-celeb (which I'm struggling with thankyouverymuch) and I wish you luck.

on 19th Nov 2008 and said:I agree with Aisling, your layout is essentially weborexic but your font is just right so I don't really mind the weborexia feel of it. I like the color scheme you used but I don't really like the layout, sorry. I think that the blend looks, well, horrible. If your remove that blend and widen the layout up, I would have liked it, even loved it. I mean, the header is gorgeous, together with the navigation. If you want, work on it.
With regards to the resources you offer I like your brushes. I think they're quite useful. I also like the stocks and the patterns. :) The smilies look kinda basic to me and some of them looks weird.
Aren't you violating copyright laws upon creating graphics using celebrity and other copyrighted images, making PNGs out of them and also redistributing fonts and programs? Tsk, tsk.
Some tutorials are useful though some are quite useless if you ask me.
Your "About" page is quite basic. I like it since it provides me with basic info about you. I'd like to see YOU though through it. I just read about you, I want to see who you are through this page. I like your name, by the way. :)
The same goes for your "Domain" page. Quite basic. You kinda bored me with your long narration on your site's history. What if I just want to know about your current site and I just want to skip all this history eck?
Overall, I think that there's still a lot of room for improvement. Please do work on it. :)

Alright... I can say that when ever I go onto RetroFreak... I fall in love with your layouts - besides Jay, from TF, your layouts are unique. I love the way you add the sidebar above the content area... it's really nice! Your layout is plain but in a very good way. It's... plainrific (: Yeh, thats a word... in my world. Your sidebar links are very good... I love the way an arrow shows up next to a link when you hover over it - I don't see any site with that kind of style, either.
I took a look at your coded layouts... they are very nice but are not layouts that I would look for. I guess they are not my type, haha. But nice, though, nice.
AH, OMG. I love how you're so organized... with the resources page? It looks oh so ne ne ne neat! :D Hahah, gotta love it. Whoo, I'll give you 4 stars... naw, 5. Everyone who has an awesome site deserves 5... well, whoeva takes care of it, yo.... nice! =] Woot woot, go Gunnstein!

on 19th Nov 2008 and said:Your website is one of those sites that inspires me to continue mine =) Though possibly this current theme with the orange and blue line isn't all getting to me, it's perfectly fine though. I guess the thing that kind of makes me o.o is the model blend. She's everywhere! XD I really like the orange and blue line that goes through the background light green. The title of your website rf with the star and the navigation that follows along after that is pretty cool. I really like the slightest difference when you hover over them =P. . .
You have many great quality contents including myspace layouts, website layouts, etc. of course besides the use of illegal celeb. images, but I hear you're planning to remove? o.o If so, great! XD
I like how when you hover over the navigation on the sidebar, there is an arrow to indicate which link you are about to click on. It makes navigating easy and when you click on a navigation link, the links on that page turn orange when hovered over which is also good because orange is a part of your layout. basically your css matches your layout which is a plus and the whole font deal that's hard to tell which is a link and which isn't is not a big deal.
As far as organization goes, your site is doing very well with that as well. There is no crowded texts or images. I believe the other confusing part may be from having two seperate navigations? o.o there's the resource, myspace, and tutorials up there and then on the side is the domain, owner, home, etc. but that puts a really different view and I guess that would be considered "unique" which is cool-
Overall I think you do a great job with your website! I can't wait to look at what design you are to put up next on your website! =D Keep up the good work!Using Firefox on Windows | Report This?

My first impression is that the layout is tidy and easy for the eyes. I like all the image rollovers you are using for navigation. In my opinion, your layout will probably look nicer without the celebrity-blend image header that you've incorporated.
I want to point out that it's kind of difficult to see what are links on your page. The css for links and normal text are the same. It will make things look nicer anyways with link perhaps in another colour, or underlined, or bold ... etc
Like the others have said already, you need to give some description as to what the two link buttons at the top is. Do they need to be there or can they also stay on the sidebar?
Also, I think that you should put the links to the comments page at the bottom of each post. It really makes the reader's life much easier without having to scroll all the way up looking for the link if they want to comment. But the little stars in between comments are cute.
{ Content
- Curious?
I did enjoy reading about your 'about me' section. Well it's easy to understand and get to know you. (Irrelevant: I'm planning a trip to norway, any tips?) I think you're pretty good at taking your self-portrait. Check spelling i.e. tounge- Domain
Effective and good that you've credited different sites.- Contact
Didn't try out the contact form but it's useful. You may want to camouflage your email address to avoid being spammed.- Network
These are off site so I'm not going to give any reviews on them. (Interesting Deviantart works)- Updates
I was going to say why premade layouts are under updates. I realised that I've forgotten there's a navigation on the top of your page. I guess it's because they look the same with your RF logo and I noted down them as your website title in my head. This really points out the importance of making links, navigations look different. I guess you really should include your resources, tutorials, and myspace stuff in the sidebar navigation as well. So they are not all over the place.- Resources
There's quite a lot of things in there! I know that for some of them you stated they are not made by you and you probably included them in your credits page but you should really put the source down beside or at least on the same page with the files. I'm not sure about what the policy of using celebrity images really is but looking through reviews, it's illegal.- Tutorials
Good that you've used your own images as example. Possibly useful but pretty basic and lacks originality. Why don't you do some walkthroughs of some of your work that I've put on Deviantart?- Myspace
To be honest, I've never used or even go on any myspace websites at all. But looking at the pages, there are pretty good. You might want to fix your layouts page as things are pretty badly positioned. Which reminds me, I think your layout is on the narrow side. Most people have large resolutions now. I think the smallest is probably 1024x768. Very, very, very few use 800x600 anymore. It would be a good idea to do something with a larger width for your next layout.{Coding
I'm not too good with these either so I won't say anything about it.
{ Conclusion
I think you're someone with potential and able to pay attention to details. You say you like originality so show us yours! Always remember quality over quantity. Don't forget to fix the links and navigation problem. Don't be disheartened by the rating, I believe you have so much room to improve!

on 17th Nov 2008 and said:Your site is essentially weborexic, but for the first time, I don't find myself cringing, because the text is an appropriate size and everything is well-spaced. Bizarre. I really like your navigation, it was fun to play with. And, yeah. I kind of like what's going on here
Obviously, I am not fond of the celebrity image. Not only is it a celebrity image, but it's not very nicely done. There is an easy fix to this though! Why not incorporate some sort of image rotation? Go outside, take a few pictures of the world around you, maybe make them greyscale, maybe with a few colours, and put them there? Or if you don't like rotations, just one photo would do. I don't know... it's rare to find a site as skinny as yours that doesn't make me completely claustrophobic. Wow. I am honestly shocked.
Right. So. You have two navigations, which is kind of weird. Your brushes are pretty nice. You should not be redistributing fonts, just a link to the original distributer would be better, and a tutorial on installing fonts is kind of dumb, I mean, it's pretty easy to figure out. ;)
Smileys are cute. Celebrity images are bad, blah blah. Frankly, there's nothing here I haven't seen on a zillion sites before.
Onto Tutorials, most look alright, but some of your HTML ones seem kind of... useless.
And, then, ew, Myspace. Honestly, stick this bit under resources and put a link to your site information up top, to kill the whole two-navigation-areas effect.
Your Domain page is interesting. Your credits page seems to be in order, etc etc. Contact form is a contact form.
I would draw more attention to your webmaster section. Right now, Curious? doesn't even look like a link, and this section would be overlooked completely by most I imagine. It also needs more attention in general, to cater to a larger audience. Because, honestly, *I* don't need resources and tutorials like the ones you offer. The only reason I would visit your site is to read your blog, and learn more about you. Making this information more accessible would help other browsers like me who see your site, and are turned off by the cookie-cutter aspect. It's easier to warm up to something if we know who's behind it all. ;)

Pretty nice and neat layout. Interesting top image. But what are those buttons on the top left and the white box beneath. Could you make it clear what they are?In the sidebar I can't easily tell what is a link and what isn't. Do you have to guess that "Curious?" is a link?

Not bad. Your English is decent. Images are displayed properly too.Resources:
No, not all content belongs to Retro Freak. Please make that clear.Brushes are pretty nice. Smileys are cute!
Fonts, you could be better off linking to their originating site (i.e. dafont.com). Some fonts are actually ok to re-distrubute, as long as the ReadMe file says so and if you can verify the ReadMe is true (this itself is another story, so you may be better with linking to font sites). Linking to the original site instead of offering downloads will save you bandwidth. :)
Stock: You only have the legal right to share "stock" if it is a photo you took or picture you drew. Scanning does not count.
PNGs. (Note there should be no apostrophe ' in PNGs) I'm guessing you just cut them but are not the photographer. This means they are not yours to share as resources. Small copies of the photos are ok if you want to do a review of the actor, movie or photographer of the model.
Everything else in Resources: You need permission from the copyright holder if you did not make the original images yourself.
Tutorials:
All seem very good! Paint Shop Pro page is broken.Myspace:
Myspace Layouts page is broken.About Me:
Well done! This page is written very well. Don't think that your English writing is bad. :) Please put captions on the pictures so we know what they are.Your HTML code:
Not bad. Lots of empty space though! You don't have a doctype, which means you haven't chosen what type of HTML you want to use.Your CSS code:
So much space! I can't read it to see if it's ok, nor can the online checker.Summary and Notes:
Good design. I see your very keen on web design. I think you should try working with your own images or get permission if you want to use someone else's. Also you need to differentiate between normal text and hyperlinks - it will help people a lot. Also look for wide page elements that break out of the layout.Using Firefox on Windows | Report This?
